About Yvonne Melli

We are Yvonne and Delfo Melli, your hosts. We came to the Garfagnana on holiday, fell in love with the area and were subsequently in a position to return and buy Casa Laura. We bought it as our holiday home but once Delfo retired we decided to leave the UK and make the permanent move to Italy. Fortunately, a decision that we haven’t regretted. Casa Laura is our home during the winter months and during the summer we live a few kilometres away in a small hamlet above Sillico. We have a passion for growing our own vegetables and a love of cooking, open spaces, walking, nature and history. All of which is possible and on the doorstep in this beautiful part of Italy.

Yvonne Melli purchased this villa in 1999

Why Yvonne Melli chose Lucca Area

We bought Casa Laura because firstly we fell in love with the spectacular views and secondly because of Sillico it’s self and it’s ideal geographical location. The village is small but full of character and history. It still has, unlike many of the villages in this area a thriving community which welcomed us from day one. It has a popular restaurant, bar and small shop. A short drive down from this idyllic mountain retreat and you are in Pieve Fosciana or Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, the capital of the Garfagnana where there are numerous supermarkets, restaurant, bars and local shops.

What makes this villa unique

Because for half of the year Casa Laura is our home perhaps it’s not surprising that many of our guests comment upon how much the house feels like ” a home from home” during their stay. Popular tourist destinations such as Lucca, Pisa and Florence are all easily accessible whilst Casa Laura set within beautiful countryside has the perfect outside dining, swimming pool and garden to relax in.

Because we live here all year round we have an in-depth knowledge of the area and it’s amenities and we are on hand as much as required to answer any queries and assist in whatever way we can to ensure our guests have an enjoyable and memorable stay.

Idyllic mountain break

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here at the end of our holiday for a week with our three children aged 7,9,11. We all had space to unwind, played in the pool, went for walks and enjoyed the local area. Thank you to Yvonne and Delfo who were the perfect hosts being there only when we needed then. The house is very well equipped with everything that you need to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Thank you for making our time in Italy so special and memorable for all the right reasons.

A lovely property in picturesque surroundings

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in this clean and well-maintained property that offered all necessary utilities as well as excellent customer service from the owners who made us feel very welcome and went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.

The sorroundings are lovely, Sillico has a very authentic feel to it and offers a lovely athmosphere and beautiful views. It is conviently located so that you can do day-trips til Florence, Lucca, Pisa, the beach and more. Also there are hiking-routes located just outside the front door.

We highly recommend Casa Laura.

Picturesque location on a Tuscan Mountain

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 have just spent a wonderful week in this terrific house.

The house is located at the top of a mountain, beside a medieval village (Silico) and it has the most amazing views out onto the Tuscan alps.

Its a large property, with plenty of space and it is very well equipped. It is well maintained, immaculately clean and Yvonne was on hand to welcome us and ensure we settled in comfortably.

We used the house as our base, while we visited some local towns, cities, including Lucca (amazing), Florence (needs more than a 1 day visit) and Barga (a quaint town nearby). On other days, we relaxed by the pool and took walks around the mountains.

Our kids loved the pool and we used it daily, to cool down from the August heat.

We would recommend this house for families and people who are looking for a unique location - the village next door is certainly that.

If you are lucky enough, you may even participate in the town festival - that occurs a few times each summer.

A very comfortable home away from home

  • 4 of 5

A beautifully positioned, spacious and comfortable holiday home which has all the home comforts you would expect. It is ideally situated on the edge of beautiful and friendly Sillico with the most fabulous views. Yvonne was a wonderful hostess for whom nothing was too much trouble. We particularly enjoyed the local restaurant and the opportunity to participate in the local threshing festival! The local walks are also well worth doing, but make sure you have proper sturdy footwear.

Fantastic place

  • 5 of 5

what a lovely place! We stayed here for 12 days with our 2 adult daughters. Casa Lara is a lovely home fully equipped. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate so we could not fully enjoy the pool and lovely outdoors but the views were stupendous. Yvette was so nice and responded to all of our questions quickly. The restaurant next door is charming and was nice to be able to walk to dinner when we didn't want to go to town. The nearby towns were great to visit and Lucca (an hour drive away) is our new favorite Italian town. The hiking was great and our daughters loved running the hills (no we just walked them). Overall a lovely visit. Thank you Yvette for sharing your home with us.

Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

After a long and tiring journey we arrived to Casa Laura and we all agreed - this must be paradise! We had read the description and seen the pictures, but you have to see it to really get the full picture. The view is breathtaking and the house is really well-maintained, clean and spacious and has everything you could possibly need. Except maybe a microwave, but we managed without it :-) Yvonne and Delfo har great hosts and helped us with everything from wine tasting tips to a mechanic when we had a flat tire.

We spent a lot of our time on the terrace; eating, sunbathing and enjoying the pool and the view. We even tried the pizza oven! We also took a few daytrips; Pisa, Firenze (stayed 1 night), Viareggio, La Spezia, Cinque Terre and Castelnuovo are all within 2 hours by car, though we really recommend taking the train from Lucca to Firenze and back.

The village restaurant is really good and the village itself is so beautiful, so be sure to take the time to explore it.

Another restaurant we really enjoyed was Antica Locanda di Sesto, just outside Lucca on the way back to Sillico. A real gem with great food and wine, and amazing olive oil!

We would recommend this house to everyone who wants a relaxing holiday and we hope we can go back sometime in the future. Thank you Yvonne and Delfo for letting us live in your beautiful home and for all your help!

Close to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana the capital of the Garfagnana valley, Sillico is a charming medieval village dating back as far as the 1500's when it was home to one of the most notorious bandit of the region, Il Moro. The village sits 700 meters above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Apuan Alps and Apennines mountains. It is a region rich in local traditions, natural beauty and breathtaking views. Naturally the area provides great walking country and from Sillico there are a selection of clearly marked walks catering for a variety of abilities. Surrounded by all this countryside you would be forgiven for thinking that this is all the region has to offer but you would be very wrong. For a cultural day out the historic city of Lucca with it's 16th century walls is a must, Pisa with it's famous leaning tower and of course not forgetting the beautiful city of Florence. Foodies are well catered for as the area has plenty of good restaurants serving traditional fare.
