Snorkel and Swim and Enjoy Paradise at Hale Ho'okomo!
Hale Ho’okomo which means in Hawaiian “to come on in” is just exactly what you are going to want to do when you arrive in this cute as can be Kapoho cottage. Located in the highly desirable, ever-sunny Kapoho, Hale Ho'okomo is set in a lush tropical and private setting. Pick papayas, bananas, and other tropical fruits right outside your door. Yes, this is Paradise! Enter through the double glass doors into the large living area and into your warm and welcoming vacation home. Live like the locals in this colorful, fun and funky Hawaiian style cottage that is just steps from some of the most spectacular snorkeling found on the Big Island. Green sea turtles (honu) love this area because of its warm temperatures and so will you! From the house, you can hear the waves and smell the clear breeze blowing across the Pacific (cleanest air in the US).
Just a five minute drive down the famous Red Road is the Ahalanui Warm Spring Park which is a geothermally heated swimming pond at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Since Kapoho is located at the furthest most eastern edge of the Big Island, it enjoys drier weather and those comfortable ocean trade winds. Just a ten minute drive is the quaint and historical village of Pahoa with its original boardwalks, shopping, and fantastic dining! There’s Italian, Thai and even Tex-Mex!
Hale Ho’okomo can sleep up to 5. There are two spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom has a Queen bed and a twin and the 2nd bedroom has a queen. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need to fix up a traditional island meal. For your convenience and easy clean up, there is a dishwasher. Other amenities to make your stay more comfortable are a washer/dryer, Flat screen Satellite TV, DVD player, telephone (local service only), and of course all linens and kitchenware included.

Quiet, close to amazing natural sites and yet close enough to go to town everyday if you wished. Super cool local vibe. Pretty much everything a normal person needs to survive comfortably is provided At the rental.
This was by far the best vacation I've ever had.
Big problems:
First, I arrived after dark: the driveway light was out and does not work, the stairs light is heavily corroded and not working (driveway and entry are to the left of the house). I came up the stairs and nearly fell because there is an unmarked 4" drop from the stair landing to the deck.
Second: The stove is rusty, the controls were marked with a magic marker. The fridge is incredible: once covered with contact paper which is now peeling, it has been re-covered with some sort of fake tin tiles. Rust on the fridge and freezer door.
Third: Living room chairs were made with woven 'stuff' which was completely falling apart.
Other bad stuff:
4am to 6am rooster crowing right outside the bedroom.
Domestic violence across the street with police, lots of screaming
Direct TV box doesn't work, so no tv. New one is being ordered.
DVD player heavily corroded, but works.
Window sill in master shower is black with rot, and some wood is gone.
Master bedroom ceiling fan blades are drooping down, and severely delaminated.
Light fixture in small bedroom seriously rusty.
Lots of stains on walls - presumably gecko poop. There were many very visible geckos in the house.
Dryer, 100% covered in rust, did not work, but was fixed after a week (I stayed for 2 weeks)
Weber grill did not actually have a grill to cook the food on. This was fixed when I called.
Light on the stairs to the laundry room doesn't work.
Light outside laundry room doesn't work
In general the finish on the house is basic and old. Living room furniture that is not falling apart is old and tired.
I have photographs to back up what I've said here.
Good Stuff:
Yes, there is some. Landscaping and the porch are great. You can relax there like its your own little world. Snorkel gear and boogie boards provided. This could be a great place, but its a mess right now.

This rental was just great and met our expectations. We had a nice laid back experience here. The tide pools are so close and amazing snorkeling. The warm pond just a 5 minute drive. All the great little restaurants in Pahoa. The Farmer's markets were fun. The Gecos as mentioned in other reviews are prevalent in the house. They did not bother us and were fun to watch! The roster was a little pesky crowing at 4:00 some mornings! We would definitely return here on a future vacation

Our vacation to Kapoho Vacationland was simply wonderful! 5 days in Paradise. The property and the Big Island exceeded our expectations. The home was very comfortable, clean and inviting! While some of the appliances and furniture were a little old and worn, everything worked and was full of charm.
We enjoyed Hilo and the surrounding areas. The restaurants, the movies and even the food stores were modern and convenient. We spent a day on the “Hike and Glow” tour at Volcano National Park. It was a fantastic day and adventure. We were so lucky to be among the 7% to actually see the lava shooting into the sky! It was a tour to be remembered!
Back at house, you couldn’t have asked for a more pleasant neighborhood. I was skeptical of the Tidal pools when I read about them, but was I wrong....simply unbelievable! So much better than the pictures show, like swimming in an aquarium! My only advise is while there are googles, snorkels and flippers, you absolutely need water shoes, diving gloves and a rash guard to protect yourself from the razor sharp rocks that are everywhere. We went snorkeling 3 Times.
You can hear the waves at night crashing against the breakers and stargaze without light pollution.
We are most definitely going to return, but next visit will be longer!
This house was the perfect spot to stay for a wedding at Uncle Robert's. We followed Gerard's advice, and picked up groceries on our way to the house.
At first we were nervous that there was no AC, but the ceiling fans all worked great, and it was beautiful. Listening to the ocean from the front porch, drinking my coffee in the morning was just what we wanted. We did not brave the tidepools, a little rough when we were there, but they were amazing to see.
The frogs at night sang us to sleep, and the gecko's were so entertaining. The neighborhood rooster I could have done without!
The bed was great - very comfortable, living quarters were too - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
We have family living close by so we did not spend a lot of time in house. The grandchildren loved the tide pools. We walked with them to the pools but found the sharp lava to hard on our over 80 year old bodies. The four geikos in resident kept the house almost insect free. In all we hope to be able stay again in the future.
Live Theater and Museums in Hilo, a wonderful Island to just go and explore!
