About Laura Belcher
Hi we live not far from Henley and we live on a family run farm. We have 4 children, many chickens, ducks and two mad black Labrador dogs, poppy and Ness. We decided as the children were getting older and being able to take responsibility of the farm, we would be able to take time out. Farming Is 365 days of the year and to get any time away was near impossible, so coastguard cottage was an ideal cottage in the beautiful Isle of Wight and not many miles away. It's a place to regenerate our batteries and spend time with family and friends.
Laura Belcher purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why Laura Belcher chose Ryde
We looked island wide for a holiday home but coastguard cottage was an ideal location. We can leave the car at southsea and Hovercraft over or if we bring the car it's 5 min drive from the ferry terminal. We have sea views and over 40 bars and cafes within a 10 min walk. We enjoy walking and lots of eating. Isle of Wight is a foodies paradise. The beach is a couple of mins flat walk away, it's safe and has beautiful golden sand.
What makes this Cottage unique
Built as a coastguard station in 2 rows of two with others added at a later date to house the Chief Officer commanding. The cottages were originally close to the beach before the Esplanade was built. The men were housed closeby in Clay Lane and Nelson Lane. Owing to the sprawling nature of the town Ryde had its own mounted coastguard. During the 19th century these buildings comprised part of a strategic network of coastal defence and control around the Island’s coastline in response to the perceived threat of illegal trade and tax evasion. The Coastguards at Ryde were also involved in sea rescue and played a notable role in local events such as the Ryde Lifeboat Disaster of 1907. Local stalwart William Rickard was a resident and was one of the earliest recipients of the Victoria Cross.

Having stayed in Ryde before we knew the location and the house was an ideal base for both exploring the island and travelling to and from the festival. House is nicely decorated with all facilities required.
Beautiful cottage, ideally situated. Highly recommended for a perfect family seaside holiday.
Lovely holiday cottage. Close to all amenities. Short stroll to shops and even shorter stroll to sandy beach. Bus station close by with good links to rest of island. Would recommend to any family looking for an old fashioned seaside holiday in beautiful accomodation. Only thing that stops it being perfect is having to pay for parking outside...it's only a few pounds a day but having to remember to feed the meter at certain times is irritating.
Great views, relaxing break but with plenty to see
The cottage is in a great location, just walking distance to the beach and many great restaurants. There are nice sea views from the bedrooms across the Solent to Portsmouth. It was good to have a high chair provided and there were buckets and spades to use on the beach, plus lots of board games to play when the weather turned wet. There is no Wifi, but I had 4G on O2 and my partner on Vodafone working best upstairs. There is plenty of parking right outside or very close (minutes up the road) it was never a problem, we purchased a tourist ticket for £39 for the week allowing us to park in most car parks on the island. Well worth it. The bathroom looks newly refurbished and it was lovely to take a relaxing soak in the bath, something I rarely get time for when at home. All round fab break away. Thank you
Lovely cottage on the sea front
A quick get away before the madness of Christmas took us back to this lovely cottage. It is ideally located for hovercraft, trains and busses so you can get around the island quite easily without the use of a car. Within easy walking distance of some lovely restaurants and shops that cater for all you could possibly want. I understand that the property is now undergoing refurbishment even though we found it to be a lovely clean and tidy cottage. Looking forward to seeing the changes when we return later this year. Perfect get away for couples or families. Laura (the owner) provides a quick response to any questions that you may have and really takes pride in providing a great little cottage for people like us to enjoy.
The reason I have not given 5 stars is the parking is expensive per day and no WiFi. Apart from that the cottage was lovely. The bed was so comfortable and great views across the sea whilst having a cup of morning tea. The bath was to die for, very spacious. Everything one needed was there. The bus station and ferry was only a couple of minutes walk, very handy.
