Lugo is located in the north-western sector of the wide and fertile flood plain that surrounds Ravenna. Characterized by a thriving economy, largely derived from agriculture, it preserves a historical center of considerable interest, which bears witness to the great flowering of civil and religious architecture over the centuries. The urban architectural identity of the city dates back to the eighteenth century, a period characterized by a great vivacity of culture and a strong economic expansion. The emerging monument of Lugo is however the Rocca - which now houses the Municipal Residence - and whose current appearance dates back to the end of the sixteenth century. From the pre-existing structure remains the north-west male, raised in 1298 by Uguccione della Faggiuola. Interesting the visit to the hanging garden which is accessed from the inner courtyard. A rare example of eighteenth-century civil architecture that anticipates modern urban concepts, is the Pavaglione, built in 1771 by Giuseppe Campana. It is an imposing quadriporticus in which are still hosted various shops while in the central space were held the markets, in particular of silk cocoons. The Rossini Theater - where prose shows, concerts and a prestigious international opera season are held throughout the year - is an eighteenth-century building, to which Bibiena contributed. Near the Theater, the Civic Library, housed in the 18th century Palazzo Trisi erected on a project by Cosimo Morelli, preserves a considerable library heritage, as well as manuscripts, incunabula and cinquecentine. The churches are full of artistic testimonies of various eras. The Church of Carmine holds the Callido and Gatti organs on which Gioachino Rossini used to practice as a child. The great musician - born in Pesaro in 1792 - lived for some time in Lugo, where his family moved in 1802. La Collegiata, the work of Cosimo Morelli, has a suggestive fifteenth-century cloister. The churches of Suffragio and Sant'Onofrio keep paintings by Ignazio Stern. The monument to Francesco Baracca and the museum of the same name recall the Italian aviation pioneer born in Lugo. For opera lovers, and in particular one of its main protagonists of the last century, it is possible to follow a Rossini itinerary that passes through the musician's house. Of considerable historical and cultural interest is the Jewish Cemetery, which attests the presence in Lugo, in past centuries, of a large Jewish community. Last but not least, the weekly market which, thanks to its ancient origins and breadth, is a popular tourist destination. A pleasant area of equipped green is the Parco del Loto in the Buche Gallamini Oasis. Surface 116.93 sq.
