The designer owners have conducted a restoration in which the charm of the building has been retained rather than sacrificed. ° Once owned by a noble family of Montmorillon, it is a fine example of C18th architecture. It was primarily used as a hunting lodge. The former tunnels to the local church are now filled in but a carving in the stone wall attests to somebody having spent some time below ground.
° The area was on the Compostello pilgrimage route and the Crusaders would have passed through here. Much of the history is linked to the Hundred Years War between France and England (that is when they were not marrying each other!).
° More recently the area had a strong resistance movement during World War 11.
