About the property

Renovated chateau near Poitiers/Michelin Star restaurant/Chinon vineyards

The magnificent recently renovated Chateau L'Hubertiere is in Poitou Charente, near Poitiers. Set in 2.5 hectares of landscaped gardens + orchard and an orangery. Only church bells & birdsong disturb the peace. It is situated in the heart of a mediaeval village surrounded by the outstanding yet little known countryside of Western France.

Live like a Lord in this splendid chateau that you can call home for your holiday and enjoy a different pace of life in Western France.

The designer owners have conducted a full restoration in which the charm of the building has been retained rather than sacrificed. It is stylishly furnished with a mix of contemporary and antique pieces and contains an interesting collection of Australian indigenous art (includes a work by Nungurra Naparulla whose art is featured in the Musée de Branly in Paris) + 1970's glazed pottery from Vallauris. A heating fee applies in winter months. Charges apply for events/weddings. Nominal charge may apply for pets.

° Once owned by a noble family of Montmorillon, it is a fine example of C18th architecture. It was primarily used as a hunting lodge. The former tunnels to the local church are now filled in but a carving in the stone wall attests to somebody having spent some time below ground.

° The area was on the Compostello pilgrimage route and the Crusaders would have passed through here. Much of the history is linked to the Hundred Years War between France and England (that is when they were not marrying each other!).

Lovely escape to the country, chateau included!

  • 5 of 5

This is a fantastic place to come and relax. It has modern amenities so it is both welcoming and comfortable. The owners have done a great job styling it in an original and tasteful way, unlike many country properties I've seen, and the garden and pool were a perfect playground for my daughter. Happy to recommend.

Beautiful chateau in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Chateau l'Hubertiere with friends and had a great time exploring the local area. The chateau is in a small village which has a bakery and a bistro. Its not far from the airport at Poitiers where you can hire a car. The village has a tennis court that we used and it was free of charge. There is a little lake and an old church. There is even a castle ruin just outside the village.

The chateau is huge, with a lovely spiral stone staircase, spacious living areas, two dining tables that seat 10 people, plus a really nice Conservatory that opens up to the pool and rear grounds. The chateau is beautifully furnished, the beds comfortable, with good quality bedding and towels. We had a four poster in the bedroom that had an ensuite with a bath and shower.

The kitchen is well stocked and there is even a little kitchen off the main one so two large fridges are available.

The grounds are well kept, with a large pool, BBQ and outdoor seating area, with lots of trees and are very private at the rear. The front of the chateau has massive wrought iron gates and there are automatic electric gates that lead to the parking area next to the stables that look more like a Manor house than stables.

The owners were very accommodating and advised us where to go and what to see in the local area such as castles, fortified medieval villages, restaurants and even Roman ruins that are not far.

Overall a wonderful place for a holiday with family and friends. Something very special. Five Stars
