In the grounds of a 16th century ruin, on the stunning West coast of Ireland, the cottage is situated on a beautiful headland surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
The accommodation comprises 3 large bedrooms including the master double room with en suite facility(shower) and two further twin bedrooms and a family bathroom. The modern fitted kitchen and dining area is well equipped and leads onto the south facing patio area overlooking an Atlantic estuary.
There are two separate living areas, one with a TV with DVD facility, so children and adults can have their own space. Equally, there is room in the lounge for everyone to get together in front of the fire.
A high chair and travel cot are available at the property.
Declan and I bought the cottage after staying in the one next door. We were living in as houseparents at a school in the west of England and knew we needed a bolt hole.
Annemarie Rogers purchased this house in 2002
In 2002 our 3 boys were 9,8 and 2. We fell in love with Ballyvaughan, Galway, the amazing beaches, the Burren and everything about the area. Since we both have strong family connections with the area, it seemed like the perfect place to buy a family home. Still living in the west country, but with 2 out of 3 of the boys now grown up and moved on, we all still love returning to our Ireland home. We are sure you will love this area too. If you want to know anything at all about Ballyvaughan and its surrounds do not hesitate to ask.
Ocean views, mountain views, surf beaches, golf courses, the most amazing fresh lobster and crab, art, craft, Galway city, cliffs of Moher, Irish music, farmers markets, crabbing on your doorstep. Open fire, totally safe patio for barbeques or stone painting!
Is there anything more you could ask for?
Nice home in a beautiful location, very quiet, nice views, ample parking and a castle tower! The home had everything we needed, we would have liked a larger TV for the evenings relaxing in the comfortable living room. The village is quaint and we had good meals at Monks and Logues. The village is a little over 3 miles though not about 1 mile to the cottage as stated in the description.
We booked the cottage to have a weeks escape from the pressures of daily working life. It was just the job and we had some wonderful walks in the surrounding along with some day trips out, the cottage was an idea base and very comfortable/clean (plenty of room for just the two of us!), highly recommended.
Amazing cottage. Spacious, cosy, clean, stunning views, just pefect! We had a lovely week and have already booked again for next year!
It has everything you need for a great time.
Tucked away from the main road you're instantly transported to a slow pace of life, in tune with the tides. We waited for the greater black-backed gull, the curlews and the heron to sit out the tide and then waddle over the mudflats eating the worms.
When we were done doing that, we might take a walk along the edge of the tiny back, round the headland and find the big stones just cut off by the tide. Dad would carry the kids out and maroon them there (only joking!). Peace, fun and absolute natural beauty.
In a day of rain we popped our heads underground, at Ailwee cave, which was enthralling. Make it more fun by stopping off at the Dolmen on the way.
Be sure to visit the big hill behind the house, on the other side of the main road. It's a climb, but worth the effort. Find the little stone shelters built on top, and just carry on walking. Look out for all the diverse wildfolowers, which are absolutely everywhere.
The house - of course, you want to hear about the house - very relaxing. Everything you need is there, including plenty of hot water. The kitchen and back room are great for sitting in and planning your next day, spread round a big map of the Burren. Sit outside with your breakfast on sunny days, so pleasant. You get a really decent night's sleep in those beds.
Be sure to stock up with a big shop in a large supermarket, Ballyvaughan is OK for the bare necessities but couldn't provide everything we need. Ennis has a Dunnes stores in the centre, if you're travelling up from Shannon.
What more can I say? Our photos say it all. Happy kids in Wellies walking along the track when the tide has covered it; endless pictures of seaweed; smiling cheeky faces chewing bits of grass, sat listening to the wind in a rock shelter; some cows in a gateway; orchids in the Burren; ROCKS EVERYWHERE.
Ballyvaughan is a village and small port on the southern shores of Galway Bay is a convenient centre for exploring the fascinating surrounding countryside. It also has a lot to offer the visitor in its own right: sea fishing, pubs, restaurants, craft workshops.
Our cottage is situated about 1 mile outside Ballyvaughan, just beyond Bishop's Quarter beach. Fanore beach is only 20 min drive away and is excellent for surfing (instruction is available at this beach). There are numerous wonderful pubs and restaurants within 10 min drive and Ballyvaughan has all the essentials you need including a small supermarket, resturants, gift shop and pharmacy.
Cosmopolitan Galway city lies 25 miles around the bay and is well worth a visit. If you can get there when the races are on or the oyster festival is in full swing it is a place not to be missed.
