After a trip through Belize, we were immediately taken by the unparalleled beauty of the country and the the honest friendliness of the Belizean people - especially the locals we met while traveling through the village of Hopkins. It truly was an awe-inspiring experience that convinced us that this country was a place we wanted to be a part of.
Yekateryna (Katya) Hackl purchased this house in 2015
The geographical diversity of Belize has to be seen to be believed. Full-on overgrown jungles, dry barren semi-arid areas, lagoons teeming with flora and fauna, white sand beaches, the largest network of underground caves in the world, and one of the top-ranked dive and snorkel reefs in the world. To have a home here, especially in one of the friendliest, most beautiful communities in the country, is a dream come true.
I cannot say enough about this beautiful home surrounded by beautiful people in a beautiful town. My son and I had a wonderful relaxing time. The home is well appointed and we were in awe over the craftsmanship. The beds were also heavenly!!! You will sink down in them like a cloud!! We will be back!!!! Love love loved it!!!!!
We've rented homes in many locations and this is truly the best. The ability to be right on the beach and also in the village is unbeatable. We walked or biked to all of our meals (Cheryl had just gotten bikes for the property) and we loved the close proximity to everything. The doors made the house comfortable even on the hottest days with the cross ventilation. The house had everything we needed and the pictures were exactly like the home. This was the perfect relaxing vacation spot.
Imagine the best place you could ever stay in and that is not good enough to describe this piece of paradise. Care taker is right next door and she is AWESOME!!! Make SURE you watch out for those speed bumps on the road they will kill your car.
We're so happy we stayed here while we were in Hopkins. We enjoyed the house and it was great to be in the center of the village. It was clean and just as described on the VRBO site. The owners were very responsive when we had questions about the property before booking. All the amenities listed on the site were wonderful to have. The bed was very comfortable! We could easily walk to the grocery store, which was so close, the vegetable stand which was right across the street, as well restaurants. Cheryl, the property manager lives right next door, and she was so friendly, very helpful, easily accessible, and checked with us when an opportunity came up to buy fresh juice, etc. She also picked us up at the airport in Dangriga, and arranged for transport back at the end of our stay. She arranged any tours on the water and land that we were interested in. For us, being right on the beach, close to the water was exactly what we wanted. There are no screens when the doors are open to the patio on the beach side, but we didn't have problems with bugs in the evening. We had a wonderful time, and we hope to go back for another stay!!
The location is great, walking distance to grocery store and restaurants. The beach is beautiful and as you can see from the picture the steps walk right out to the beach. The double doors in all rooms open for views of the water from inside the house and a nice breeze. The kitchen is fully equipped if you want to cook instead of eating at the little restaurants that serve amazing food (we didn't!). We have been to Hopkins 5 times and this is where we will stay from now on. If it matters to you, you should know that the internet connection goes out frequently.
We stayed for a month at aMayanHeaven. The pictures do not do it justice. What a beautiful home. It is so tastefully decorated and perfectly located. We felt right at home immediately. Katya, you were a wonderful hostess and made our stay so comfortable and the people of Hopkins are the salt of the earth.
You can lose track of time just listening to the waves and gazing out at the ocean in a constant breeze. The cloud formations at daybreak are hypnotic and the spell is sometimes broken with the sight of passing dolphins. There are lots of activities nearby like snorkelling, fishing, cave tubing, night tours on the Sittee River, ziplining, waterfalls, Mayan ruins, etc, etc.
I would recommend this holiday rental to my family and friends.
Hopkins is a Garifuna village on the coast of the Stann Creek District in Belize. Hopkins is considered by some Belizeans to be the cultural center of the Garifuna population in Belize. The town hosts its own national holiday, Hopkins Day, and welcomes people for their celebration on Garifuna Independence Day as well, they do this with drum ceremonies that can last till early hours in the morning.
The village is separated into two parts; the Northside (Baila) and the Southside (False Sittee). Hopkins is surrounded by the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range inland, and the Caribbean Sea on its shore. The village was created in 1942 to replace the village of Newtown, which was devastated by a hurricane further up the coast.
Today Hopkins is a small but vibrant community of approximately 1,000 villagers. The people live mostly by farming and fishing, and more recently many have found work in the growing tourist industry. The residents are known for their friendliness and genuine hospitality, and welcome visitors to their village. Hopkins has a selection of gift shops, restaurants and small bars. Hopkins was recently voted 'The Friendliest Village in Belize' by Belize First Magazine.
