About Yekateryna (Katya) Hackl
After a trip through Belize, we were immediately taken by the unparalleled beauty of the country and the the honest friendliness of the Belizean people - especially the locals we met while traveling through the village of Hopkins. It truly was an awe-inspiring experience that convinced us that this country was a place we wanted to be a part of.

Why Yekateryna (Katya) Hackl chose Hopkins
The geographical diversity of Belize has to be seen to be believed. Full-on overgrown jungles, dry barren semi-arid areas, lagoons teeming with flora and fauna, white sand beaches, the largest network of underground caves in the world, and one of the top-ranked dive and snorkel reefs in the world. To have a home here, especially in one of the friendliest, most beautiful communities in the country, is a dream come true.

We spent two weeks in this delightful village. The fact that we stayed in a wonderful house added to our enjoyment of the area. Drinking our morning coffee while sitting on the veranda watching the ocean waves hit the beach was a great way to start the day. While we didn't do any cooking to speak of, the kitchen is very well stocked. The house is very comfortable and conveniently located in the middle of the main street. Several eateries as well as a fruit stand and market are just steps away. Cheryl, the property manager, is very friendly and accommodating. She answers a call immediately and finds solutions to any problems one may encounter. I can sum up our entire experience by saying that we have already booked this house for a month in 2019!
Loved our stay, again!
We had such a wonderful time last year when we stayed here for a week, we decided come back for 2 weeks this year. That's probably one of the best testimonials. We appreciate all the amenities that it has, it's great master bed, it's location in the village and proximity to the veggie stand, grocery store, and village restaurants. A new addition to the place that isn't in the photos is a nice wooden fence that helps delineate the public part of the beach and the house property. It's just the right height, about 3 feet high on the beach front side. They also have added two bikes to use, which is great. We didn't use them this year as much as we would have last year. This year we rented a car from Hopkins Auto Rental, so we were able to easily mix up our relaxing days on the beach with day trips, tours, hikes, etc. Katya, thanks for sharing your home with us, again!
I first want to thank Katya and Robin for allowing us the use of their home. My wife and I spent 10 days near the end of January.
The home and location are terrific.
Cheryl is great and helped us with all of our needs.
The food selection within walking distance is good and convenient.
We had excellent jerk chicken at Gecko's. Very good pizza at the Pizza Shack.
The food at Peer's is also wonderful.
We enjoyed sitting on the veranda and watching the world go by.
The bed and pillows are terrific.
All around a very nice vacation.
For as much a we paid per night for this place you'd think it would have had hot water.
The house is gorgeous and amazing, except for the lack of hot water. We stayed in very budget friendly places for most of our stay and they had hot water, so it does not make sense that this place wouldn't. Also as long as you are looking out the back door at the beach the scenery is amazing, step out front after dark and it's a different story. We had a guy sitting outside our gate and then follow us on his bike for a ways asking first for work, then money. The house sits on the poorer side of town and after dark it is a different town. Cheryl was mostly a great hostess, she is slow to reply to emails so make contact early. She runs a tourist spot near the house that seems convenient for booking snorkeling and other trips but her prices are higher than any place else and it seems to change depending on what day it is or who you ask. The rest of the house and stay were great , but those little things that we had to deal with at a place that was double or quadruple the cost of our other places, soured us on renting from here when we return next year.
I’m so sorry you didn’t have a better experience at the house. If we had known about the issues you mentioned we would have been happy to address. We were right next door and I tried to check in with you whenever I saw you as I know you were both not feeling well.
We had no idea there was a problem with the water and I could have had a plumber/electrician check it immediately, I’m so sorry you didn’t have hot water for your stay.
My husband and I are very responsive to security concerns on the property, had we known that someone was bothering you or making you uncomfortable we would have addressed it right away. Hopkins is a great village with many wonderful people but security is a concern in a developing tourist destination and we are very concerned about making sure people feel safe and secure so their stay is pleasant.
Can you please let me know what you meant about the inconsistent pricing for tours? Our prices are advertised on our website and I would like to make sure they are consistently quoted to guests by myself and all staff. We also price our tours competitively and are in line or cheaper than other (legal) operators in Hopkins, I’m sorry you felt we were overpriced.

Affordable Beachfront Luxury
My husband and I stayed in Hopkins for a week and half, ending our trip with a few days at AMayanHeaven with two friends. Not to say our other accommodations were not wonderful, but this really felt like our own little palace! The house is clean and beautifully appointed just as in the photos. The shower was wonderful and the beds were SO COMFORTABLE that we hope to invest in the same mattress at home. We didn't get a chance to meet Cheryl as she was out of town, but even from afar she was helpful with any of our questions/snags (which were few). If you want to use the grill, make sure to grab some gas when the truck rolls through. Proximity to veg stand, grocery and Hopkins proper is more than ideal. Also, check out George and Adrian's wood carvings and lionfish jewelry right next door at Joyjah! Thanks to Katya for sharing her lovely home. If you're looking for a little bit of luxury while still taking in the village and culture of Hopkins, this house is highly recommended!
What a treat to stay at this lovely beachfront home. Tranquility was achieved
Maya Heaven is lovely home in Hopkins. Having the produce stand and store at the end of the lane was so convenient. We prefer to cook our own meals, the kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans and condiments, if the lady comes by with tamales get them they were some of the best I've eaten. Thanks for sharing your lovely home
Hopkins is a Garifuna village on the coast of the Stann Creek District in Belize. Hopkins is considered by some Belizeans to be the cultural center of the Garifuna population in Belize. The town hosts its own national holiday, Hopkins Day, and welcomes people for their celebration on Garifuna Independence Day as well, they do this with drum ceremonies that can last till early hours in the morning. The village is separated into two parts; the Northside (Baila) and the Southside (False Sittee). Hopkins is surrounded by the Maya Mountains and the Cockscomb Range inland, and the Caribbean Sea on its shore. The village was created in 1942 to replace the village of Newtown, which was devastated by a hurricane further up the coast. Today Hopkins is a small but vibrant community of approximately 1,000 villagers. The people live mostly by farming and fishing, and more recently many have found work in the growing tourist industry. The residents are known for their friendliness and genuine hospitality, and welcome visitors to their village. Hopkins has a selection of gift shops, restaurants and small bars. Hopkins was recently voted 'The Friendliest Village in Belize' by Belize First Magazine.
