Welcome to our newly acquired home in Azille. Ken and I chose to purchase our home in the ancient part of the medieval village of Azille following some very happy holidays here with wonderful local friends. We plan on spending several months of the year here, but while we are away we invite you to share the warmth and joy of this delightful location and home. More photos will follow when our decorating is finished in the next couple of weeks.
Azille offers a quiet location very close to the Canal du Midi reached through the next village a few kilometers away. We have a Friday market where you can buy wonderful fresh produce, meats and poultry and delicious cooked sweets and savouries.
On Tuesday you can shop at the extensive local market in Olonzac, or travel to Narbonne 40 minutes away for the Thursday and Saturday markets. There is also a permanent food market in Narbonne. If you do not want to drive, rent a bicycle - we have safe bicycle storage in our cave at the lower level of our house accessed from both inside and outside the house.
Ken will attest to the fact that Azille is situated well for short and long bike rides - he disappears for several hours at a time on his bike! Enjoy riding along the Canal du Midi on mountain bikes, or head up into the mountains and enjoy peaceful villages and a more challenging ride.
The village boasts a traditional French bar - Bar Artistes, where if you are lucky you might hit a karaoke night! In addition there is a wine bar and art gallery, a Boulanger, Epicierie, and two restaurants, one of which is set on the grounds of a local farm within walking distance of the village. You can drink as much wine as you like and stroll home.
Beaches are only a 40 minute drive away - close to Narboone, but if you want to swim in a lake, windsurf or take a sailing boat out we have a lake just outside the village.
Our home is one of character! You will see that as a very old and evolving house house each room has a shape of its own. Enter our home into a large dining room which leads into the compact kitchen and down to the living room. From the living room please be careful taking the steps down into the cave where we keep the washers and dryer. We have a small washing machine for smaller loads, and a full size brand new washer and dryer for regular loads. I prefer to dry my clothes on the terrace in the sunshine. There is an extremely efficient wood-burning stove in the living room.
The first of two shower rooms is located off the kitchen. Yes, we thought that was odd too. We have plans to change that and extend the kitchen. Upstairs on the next level are two bedrooms and a shower room located off a large landing which also functions as a study area for me. One bedroom is a double, and the second bedroom is a twin room. Take the stairs to the top level and the glorious terrace. The third very private bedroom is located off the terrace. This is the room Ken and I chose as our own. We hope you will enjoy the views from this room, and relax in the peace of the birdsong.
We have a plancher on the terrace instead of a BBQ. We find it cooks food better, more evenly and without any carcinogens like charcoal. We hope you will enjoy the sunbeds and the lovely tiled outdoor table with chairs. The evening sun is particularly lovely approaching sunset from up here.
In summary we offer you:
- 3 bedrooms
- 2 shower rooms
- Extremely well equipped kitchen
- Cave with laundry facilities and safe bicycle storage
- English and French television
- Free high-speed internet
- Fabulous terrace with views
We welcome families but please remember we have open stone stair cases so our home is not really suitable for toddlers. If you want to bring babies you will need to bring your own cot, high-chair etc. We do not provide anything for children.
I hope you will enjoy your stay.

About Belinda Shoemaker
Hello, my husband, Ken, and I purchased our home on Rue Tallavigne as our French home away from home. We are based in California and enjoy spending several months a year back in our Devon and French homes. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. I, Belinda am a retired Speech and Language Therapist. I also worked in high-end Real Estate in California and am now a writer. Ken is a genius, ( very proud wife) and works in Silicon Valley designing computer chips. We have a wonderful daughter who is an opera singer.
Belinda Shoemaker purchased this House in 2017
Why Belinda Shoemaker chose Carcassonne
We absolutely adore sleepy, Traditional French villages. We are great admirers of the architecture, particularly that of the older French homes. We love this house because of its history as part of the ancient part of the village. It is beautifully constructed from stone. We love having the cave for wine and bicycle storage, but most of all, we adore the terrace and the views out over the Black Mountains and the vineyards. I spent a lot of my childhood holidays in France, and this village, with the lovely community brings back those happy memories.
What makes this House unique
Our home is situated very well for walks along the Canal du Midi. There are lots of hiking trails in the area. You can walk out of the house and in seconds be in the vineyards. There are fabulous wineries on the door step. Carcassonne Airport is a 35 minute drive away, and Beziers Airport is just under an hour away. You can be at the beach and enjoy the coast in 45 minutes, or just stay around the area and enjoy the lake. The cities of Toulouse and Montpellier are within 2 hours by car.

Ideal French Village Getaway
I had such a great time relaxing and getting away from it all in Azille, a small quiet charming French village. The cozy traditional village house is beautifully decorated. I really appreciated the small charming details, such as the whimsical decor, luxury bedding & towels and kitchen equipped with appliances, which delighted me as I love to cook! It came in handy when I bought some fresh fish & vegetables at the local village market. I also really appreciated the Terrace outside the Master Suite which had sweeping views of the stunning countryside; it is where I drank wine and watched the sun set-amazing! Great for walks to the local bar and wine tasting rooms-the wine is phenomenal and extremely well priced. Stunning Gothic church is just blocks away from the house and its truly an amazing piece of architecture. The house is also close to the Canal du Midi and we got to go on long relaxing walks by the canal. We also rented a car to drive by the breathtaking vineyards and to the nearby castles of Minervois and Carcassonne. Gorgeous setting and accommodations made this first trip to Azille a memorable one and definitely not our last!
Furthermore, Belinda, the owner, was very helpful and wonderful to work with.
It was an absolute pleasure having you stay in our home. We are glad you had such a lovely time.
