About Martin

I came to Yapham Cottages in June 2011. It is so peaceful and relaxing. It is just like being on a permanent holiday! I take great pleasure in welcoming our guests to Yapham Cottages. It is great chatting with the guests, and I really enjoy listening about the places they have visited whilst staying here. I can then share the "little gems" they have discovered with new guests. I am delighted to say that many of my guests often become good friends, and keep coming back to visit us. Two couples have already been back twice since I took over, and they have already booked two more visits in 2012! I am also developing social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Guests enjoy keeping in touch with what is happening here at Yapham Cottages this way.

Martin purchased this Cottage in 2011

Why Martin chose Hartland

What a difference moving to Yapham has made to my life! After the hectic bustle of life living near London, Devon is completely different. Life is much more sedate. No more traffic jams, pollution, or people rushing back and forth. Everything is so much more relaxed. It is just like being on a permanent holiday! The people in Hartland are very welcoming, nothing is any trouble. They go out of their way to help. It really is a great location. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity, this is it. The only other visible neighbour, is the farm on the opposite side of the lovely valley. And yet the A39 is only a short drive away, giving easy access to Bude, Bideford, and Barnstaple. The Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks are within easy driving distance.

What makes this Cottage unique

There are two fantastic reasons to stay with us at Yapham Cottages. The first one is that it is a great place to come and chill out. You can leave work behind and just relax in your cottage. The cottages are in a quiet and secluded location. There is no traffic noise here. At night you can almost touch the stars up in the sky. You can take a walk through the orchard, stroll through our ancient woodland, or picnic in our paddock. The Hartland Peninsula is a walker's paradise, with the South West Coast Path right on our doorstep. There is a never ending list of places to visit. Hartland Abbey and Docton Mill are both nearby. Each cottage contains guides for the local area, and further beyond in Devon and Cornwall. You will never be left wondering, "What can we do today?"

The owner had ensured we had food on arrival, coffee, tea, milk and sugar, plus a cream tea and a box of chocolates. Lots of great pubs near by plus some amazing cliff top walks. Couldn't have been happier would recommend to friends and family and certainly go back again.

Thank you for writing a review of your recent stay with us. I am delighted that you found the cottage cosy and well equipped. The cottage does make a great base for walking around Hartland, especially with the South West Coast Path nearby, and why not pop in and have a pub lunch whilst out walking! I hope that you will return again in the future.

                                                                  Kind regards,

                                                                  Fantastic week at Shipload Cottage!

                                                                  Stephen C.

Recently enjoyed a great week (6-13 Aug) in Shipload Cottage with my wife, 2 teenage kids and our one-year old Labrador. I can honestly say this was one of the best rental properties we have holidayed in. Met by Martin on arrival to show us where everything was. Extremely well equipped, wi-if that actually works (which like it or not is pretty much the number one requirement of the kids) and access to a shared utility area with a washing machine, tumble dryer and extra freezer space. We arrived to flowers in the kitchen, homemade scones (with homemade jam and clotted cream), a bottle of wine (we were even asked our preference for red or white before arrival), a box of chocolates and some basics to get us going (including milk, tea, coffee, washing-up liquid, etc.).

Cottage is located on a quiet and peaceful farm just outside the village of Hartland and is alongside two other rental cottages as well as the owner's house. Easy access to the Devon coastal path and some lesser known but really beautiful beaches (there is a picture of 9 beaches on the kitchen wall and we managed to get to 5 of them - need to go back at some point to do the other 4). Short drive to some of the more popular surfing beaches both in Devon and Cornwall. Lots of information in the cottage on where to eat, where to shop and places to visit (Nearby Clovelly is definitely to be recommended).

                                                                  Super cottage, super location!

                                                                  Christopher W.

Lovely cottage, excellent facilities in a very peaceful location. The cottage was very well equipped, comfortable, spotlessly clean with the added advantage of a second bathroom. Very useful when we needed to be out in a hurry as with our trip to Lundy! It was nice to sit out on the patio with the only noise the wildlife. We felt especially welcome when we discovered the flowers, wine, chocolates and homemade scones! These thoughtful touches really do make a difference. Although the weather was not at its best this didn't detract from a super holiday in a super cottage! Just wish we could have stayed longer! I can thoroughly recommend Shipload Cottage.

                                                                  Owner's Response:

                                                                  Dear Anonymous,

Thank you for writing a review of your stay in Shipload Cottage. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay, and the little extras that we lay on for guests. It is lovely to be able to sit out on the patio now we have the lighter nights isn't it? I am certain that our cleaner will be pleased to hear that you found the cottage spotlessly clean. We do find that many couples book the two bedroom cottage, although they sometimes tell us that it is because their partner snores! I hope that we will see you again in the future.

                                                                  Kind regards,

A very warm welcome, everything you would require to make your stay comfortable

                                                                  Barrie E.

A great break away from it all

                                                                  Owner's Response:

Thank for writing a review of your stay in Barley Cottage. I am delighted that you found the cottage and setting to be a "great break away from it all". I hope that we will see you again in the future.

                                                                  Kind regards,

                                                                  A beautiful getaway.

                                                                  EmShipload Cottage , Yapham, Devon.

I have travelled a lot and I can honestly say that Shipload Cottage was the nicest cottage that I have stayed in. Martin the manager does an amazing job looking after the cottages and making your stay very comfortable. Upon arrival it took my breath away, the scenery is beautiful with lots of wildlife and we were greeted with a bottle of wine, and scones. The cottage is very well equipped, clean, cosy and warm and there are many coastal walks on your doorstep.. Hartland has a couple of convenience shops and a couple pubs which is only a five minute drive away and there is also the lighthouse at Hartland Quay which is a stunning walk looking right out to the sea. If it is a quiet break you are looking for and you like amazing walks then this is definitely for you and thank you Martin for making our stay so special.

I hope that you enjoyed decorating the Christmas tree. We left it up for the next guests! It would be fantastic if you could stay with us again in the future. Kind regards, Martin.
