About Robin Thomas
My parents first built a small cabin on the property in 1960. Potato Lake was the location for summer vacations every year. The lake views and clear water are spectacular and ideal for year round enjoyment. We made side trips to Itasca State Park nearly every summer, and added nearby Summer Hill Farm as a destination when they opened. Additional side trips to Bemidji were made to visit Paul Bunyan and Babe on Lake Bemidji.
Robin Thomas purchased this House in 1960
What makes this House unique
This property and the setting of the cabin are unique on Potato Lakes' north shore. We are on a point that provides views to the east, south and west arms of the lake that no one else can boast. The setting is very private which is ideal for a relaxing family gatherings.

Girls Getaway Weekend
The property was amazing! It was exactly what was pictured on the Vrbo site. The cabin was clean, well maintained and far exceeded our expectations. There was more than enough room to people to spread out and everything we needed was provided. We would absolutely come back. It was beautiful!
Robin was wonderful to work with and was very quick to respond to any questions. The loon signs posted made it very easy to find the cabin!
Family lake week
We enjoyed a week with our adult children. Home and lake are very nice. The only shortcoming is the lawn is at a slope making lawn games difficult. Everything else was first class
Another great stay at Laughing Loon Point!
We had another great week at Laughing Loon Point. This was our second year staying here. We arrived to find everything clean, neat, and incredibly well organized. During the week we actually had a pretty powerful thunderstorm come through one early morning that knocked the power out. There were detailed directions for calling the power company with all the phone numbers and info listed and conveniently posted. So, it was incredibly easy to report the outage, and the power was back on on no time. The kitchen is well stocked with "matching dishware and utensils". The table on the deck was great for dinner outside in the evenings. The fire pit was great with lots of chairs.
We really enjoyed all the great amenities of this property. And, the owner was wonderful to deal with. Always quick to respond to any questions.
It's always nice to stay at a place where the owner "gets it" when it comes to providing a great experience for their guests.
This owner definitely "gets it"!
Great time for all
We had a great time. The house is beautiful, spacious, and everything we needed or wanted was included at the house. The coffee was a huge blessing to us. Loved the screen porch and the sectional couches. The lake was a bit disappointing, as the depth was incredibly unpredictable. Sometimes 30' deep, then suddenly 2' deep. No tubing or knee boarding for us. The firepit was great, but the bugs were terrible. The dock was wonderful. Our girls loved the small platform by the lake, and hung out there for hours. Having Walmart close was great so we didn't have to cart everything up with us. Ventured to Itasca State Park one day, and spent time in town at the candy store with the kids. Overall, it was a great time, spent with family and friends in a beautiful house.
Great vacation spot
The weather was perfect. The house is first rate and has everything we needed. Hope to return next year. This is our third year here and it is still as great as our first time.
Perfect family reunion stay
The property was beautifully equipped with so many amenities- our family had a wonderful week together enjoying the lake, golfing and a day in itasca state park which was close by.
Our cabin is located on Potato Lake, 7 miles north of Park Rapids, MN. Potato Lake is the largest lake in the area at 2,100 acres, and is a perfect lake for fishing, swimming and boating. Park Rapids has a small town atmosphere but offers many unique shops, a 3 screen movie theater, three large grocery stores and several family owned restaurants.
Itasca State Park is just 18 miles north of our cabin , and has the headwaters of the Mighty Mississippi River. The park is the oldest state park in Minnesota and has a multitude of activities for visitors of all ages. There are paved biking, hiking and groomed cross country ski trails, as well as many picnic areas and other year round activities. A must for every visitor to the area is to walk across the rocks at the very head of the Mississippi River and wade in the shallow, clear water as it starts it's course to the Gulf of Mexico.
The Heartland Trail trailhead is located in Park Rapids and is a 34 mile paved trail on a former railroad bed that is perfect for family biking, walking, and roller blading that also connects with the Paul Bunyan trail in Walker.
Dorset is a small town 12 miles to the east which boasts more restaurants per capita than any other city in Minnesota.
The Headwaters 100 bicycle tour is held the last Saturday of September every year and offers 3 separate ride tours for every level of cyclist.
