Lovely location, maybe not set up for winter rentals

  • 3 of 5

We booked this property mainly for the stunning views and peaceful location, which we could not fault. The property overall was comfortable, if a little basic. We did have a lovely time staying here, I do think for the money we paid though (peak prices over the New Year period), we were left slightly disappointed with a few areas -

- On arrival, the property was absolutely freezing, all of the storage heaters had been switched off at the mains. Being the end of December, it took a few days for the property to start warming up.

- In addition to the above, there is no heater in the kitchen at all. We had to keep the door to the kitchen constantly closed to retain any of the warmth in the house. Cooking in there was not a very pleasant experience.

- There were quite a few draughts coming from the windows in the lounge area, there was tissue/ paper towels stuffed in to these in some areas.

- The electricity charges were astronomical! Over £60 for a weeks worth of electric! On average we holiday at 2 cottages per year in Scotland, and have never had to pay for electricity, this kind of thing seems a bit outdated.

- Towels and linens were at extra cost at £15 per bed. As such we decided to bring our own, resulting in us putting our own sheets on the beds at 9pm after arrival. This cost, plus the extra electricity costs would have added another £30 to our rental price - nearly £100 in extra costs.

- The house overall was well kept, well equipped and clean, based on previous homes we have stayed in I would say we paid a lot for the standard of the house though (probably not helped by all the extra charges). We found the beds a little uncomfortable, and kitchen slightly dated. The non stick pans could have done with replacing. There seemed to be some pictures missing from the lounge, leaving just some screws in the walls...

- I initially found this property on Home Away where I could not see any mention of a maximum number of dogs. Upon requesting to book however, I was then asked to pay another £100 refundable deposit on top of the £20 per dog charge (another £200 in total), due to this. After chasing Steadings for the money, I did thankfully receive the deposit back. I would like to hope that our stay with the dogs may have helped the owners'/ Steadings' opinion of dog owners for future rentals.

- Perhaps a little naively we were expecting that the house might have a few Xmas decs up during this time, the bottle of prosecco and chocolates were much appreciated however.

Borve House brilliant but Ardnamurchan Lighthouse Very Poor

  • 5 of 5

Thought the accommodation was really lovely and in a stunning location. Had a fantastic stay - met the owner Donald, a lovely man

Shame you didnt ask for a review of Keepers cottage Ardnamurchan lighthouse where we also spent a week - Excellent location, everything else Poor or Awful. Also arranged by Steading. results in an Average standard of service for Steading, because of the glaring inconsistency in quality.

Family holiday

  • 4 of 5

Bovre has one of the best views of the islands and beach in Portuairk. You could spend all day on the balcony just taking in the view. The house was big enough to accommodate 4 adults and 2 children. Have been to Portruaik many times but first time in this house and would definitely stay here again.
