Klara Maria is an 100 year old barge.
She has been converted to a houseboat in 2002 by traditional boat designers from Friesland.
She offers all the luxury that a modern house has without loosing its maritime characteristics.
The houseboat is devided in 2 completely separated apartments, a 1 and a 2 bedroom apartment. Completely separated means separate bathrooms, kitchen; separate entries and separate sundecks.
Most houseboats are quite low inside but this one has sufficient height.
The boat is heavy ballasted. So she will not rock in windy weather or when other boats pass. No one ever got seasick !
About the sundecks : they really provide one of the nicest canal views.
Sometimes the owner (me) is a bit jealous as he cannot sit there him self.
Review 1: We had such a wonderful time in Amsterdam. The houseboat was gorgeous and it made our stay very convenient. I loved just sitting on top of the boat and looking over the canal. This was our first trip to Europe, but not our last. When we decide to take another trip to Amsterdam, we'd like to rent from you again. I can't say enough how wonderful the houseboat was and how kind you were with us and our friends. Thank you so much.
Review 2: I highly recommend renting the 'Klara Maria' houseboat. I have rented this houseboat 4 times already and plan on a 5th time next year. I have stayed in both apartments and have found them very comfortable, both come with everything an apartment would have including a washer and dryer which is very handy. The Wheelhouse is very nice and romantic at night with both apartments having a sun deck makes it a very nice place for a relaxing vacation. I have rented three other houseboats in the central Amsterdam area and the 'Klara Maria' is by far the best houseboat with very reasonable prices. It is located in a quiet area yet is within a short walking distance to everything. The Botanical Gardens, The Jewish Historical Museum and the new Hermitage Museum are across the street and you are very close to the subway and tram stops. The owner is very helpful.

My name is Kees van den Hoek.
Former teacher and school director.
Does a lot of boating in the Netherlands, Belgium and maybe France this year.
Knows a lot about houseboats and could assist you buying one.
And plays bridge.
Pieter van den Hoek purchased this boat in 2004
I like traditional houseboats (and hate the concrete ones actually).
Unique view from the decks. Dreaming away was never so easy.
We enjoyed our stay here. Location is good, about 20-25 minutes walk from the town center and other attractions. Metro is close. Stores are closeby (small store about 2 blocks and a large store about 10-15 minute walk).
House boat has plenty of headroom (I am tall). Kitchen/dining room are small but very functional. Living room is a good size and there are places to sit and a desk to write. Bedrooms are cozy & comfortable. Bathrooms are clean. Wifi is good.
Recognize that you are on a boat, so plan for it (e.g. ramp to get on board and a steep ladder to get down to the living space). Is a little difficult for luggage and may be hard for people who have a hard time with steep stairs.
Owner was super helpful and easy to communicate with.
We enjoyed our stay and would certainly stay again.
Even though our flight was delayed for 3 hrs. , Peter's son was considerate enough to wait for us and give us the tour of the boat late into the evening. The houseboat was very spaceous, clean and was a lot of fun for our kids. The location was great(basically situated in the center of Amsterdam), neighborhood was quiet , 1 block away from Botanic garden and metro,15 minute walk to Rembrandt's house. The host was responsive thru telephone and text messaging. It was very unique and fun experience for our family to live on a barge with a history of it's own. We'll definitely recommend it to our families and friends. **Amsterdam is cooler and rainy than we expected during summer, be prepared. Definitely rent a bike to get around like locals:)
Me and the wife spent a week on the Klara Maria for our honeymoon.
This place is amazing, its situated in the heart of Amsterdam. Everything is within walking distance, there are shops around the corner, and it was simple to find from the Metro.
The barge itself is beautiful. Its simple with the décor, but more spacious than a hotel room, plus you had the added of bonus of a little garden out on the front deck. When we arrived it was clean, and tidy, with a nice bottle of wine from the owner.
Pieter the owner was a joy to deal with. He answered every e mail promptly, and the one little issue we had with the bathroom lights were dealt with as soon as the problem occurred, and by the time we came back in the evening they were working again. Pieter is a very likeable guy, and me and the wife would highly recommend a stay on the Klara Maria.
I strayed on this great Houseboat with my partner and 2 friends. Our first impressions were great, we all thought that the boat was very clean and spacious, there were fresh cut flowers and local treats on arrival. Which always makes you feel a little special and well looked after. The TV had a cable with international and local channels. Saying that we didn't have much time to sit and watch TV since there is so much to do in Amsterdam. We were also provided with free WiFi which again was adequate. A range of local information and guides in various languages are available in the property. The boat itself has a sun deck where you can enjoy any nice weather with views of some beautiful architecture. If the weather isn't as nice there is also a sort of conservatory area where we spent a lot of time.... If you were to take a family there is a large dining are and Living room dvd player cd player etc it is also in a really good location which is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam but close enough to walk everywhere. It has to be said that in the four days we were in Amsterdam we only got 1 tram which we only got because we spent a few hours walking round the Zoo and couldn't be bothered walking back to the centre of Amsterdam.
All in all we had a really great stay and intend to stay their again I would also recommend the property to a friend as I am recommending it here to you.
To the owner of the houseboat, thank you very much for helping to make our holiday a great success we had a great time.
The five of us spent a week on this wonderful houseboat (two parents, three adult children). Kees was very welcoming and helpful and there could not be a better location. The metro line is two minutes away, a walk to the Centraal Station is 20 minutes, you can walk to the Museumplein. No need for a car or even a bike (and there are graffiti nearby that says "No bikes for tourists"). For people interested in the Jewish history of Amsterdam, this houseboat is right in the middle of the old neighbourhood. For people looking at the history of the Dutch Jews during the Holocaust, the boat is across from the headquarters of the Jewish Council building (you can see it at the bow of the houseboat , with the white stone entrance). The Jewish Museum, the Portuguese Synagogue, the Hollandse Schouwburg.
Our only concerns were small ones...you expect to have things like a bar of soap and some shampoo available, and while an antibacterial liquid soap was there, there was nothing more. As well, there was a pod-based coffee-making machine, but a few pods (or even more than a few pods) would have been a nice touch. Guest should know that since the water from the bathroom has to be pumped off the boat, the noise of the pump has to be factored into the use of the bathroom as the forward bedroom is close to the pump. But if you're not taking baths late at night, this isn't a problem.
The houseboat was warm and cosy, there was no real boat movement (and we had some very windy days during our stay) and being on the water in a city so defined by water was magical. Thanks to Kees for making our stay very enjoyable! Highly recommended.
Our stay was perfect. The boat was super fun for my 8 and 9 year old boys. The boat is very comfortable and warm. We used the kitchen and amazing bath every night. Easy to get there with the metro. The owner is very easy going, helpful and friendly. What an experience, about a million times better than a hotel. And we caught a fish!
Amsterdam city center.
Hermitage museum, Jewish historical museum, Rembrandt house, flee market, botanical garden and zoo all around the corner.
Restaurants and shops and pubs in the neighborhood.
Utrechtse Straat (very trendy) on walking distance.
Cheap student eateries on walking distance
Close to public transport (underground, tram and museum boat).
