Tavira is a city bounded by long beaches separated by an arm of the estuary of the Ria Formosa and by gentle hills covered with sweet odors, Tavira is one of the most delightful cities in the Algarve, with its unique architecture.
It has a charming mix of beautiful buildings, cobbled streets and squares that maintain the ambience of a traditional Algarve fishing village. The river Gilão, which runs along the city center, amplifies its charm. The city is full of elegant buildings that display the characteristic pyramidal roofs of Tavira and is crossed by an old bridge, allegedly of Roman origin, whose best perspective can be obtained from the Republic Square. This square, surrounded by the Town Hall and other splendid buildings, is extended by gardens which are a great place to walk on foot.
The neighboring Mercado da Ribeira, a 19th century forged iron building that once housed the old central market, is another pleasant area to stroll through the shops and have a meal or drink in its many restaurants and bars - a perfect opportunity to relax and taste the local specialties such as feijoada de lingueirão, octopus rice or tuna with onion and tomato sauce.
Just outside Tavira, prepare to be amazed by the luminosity of the salinas that constitute a remote tradition of the zone and that produce the most refined table salt of the country. In addition to the salt flats, you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Ria Formosa estuary - a vast network of canals, marshes and sandbanks that house numerous species of migratory birds. Boats departing from Tavira offer scenic walks through these calm waters.
In addition to the waters of the estuary extends a paradise for lovers of the sun and sea. Two strips of sand, separated by canals and accessible by boat, form two islands composed of long stretches of dunes. The island of Tavira - the nearest beach in the city - is situated in the eastern part of the island and offers various facilities including bars, restaurants and water sports. The beautiful and sheltered Barril Beach is to the west and has access through a picturesque tourist train that crosses the muddy banks and marshes of the Ria Formosa or Terra Estreita Beach with access by boat available on the pier of Sta Luzia. The most isolated beaches lie to the west of the island of Tavira or to the east of the neighboring island of Cabanas. These short panoramic trips offer a unique opportunity to admire the natural landscape and to observe the fauna of the region.
Golfers can play on one of four 18-hole golf courses. Benamor Golf is just outside Tavira, while the Quinta de Cima, Quinta da Ria and Monte Rei Golf & Country Club courses are within walking distance to the east.
