About Zoe Cawthorn

We have lived in Spain in the Alpjurras since 2003. We spent 3 years doing up the property in Orgiva and subsequently rented it out for holidays. We spent any spare time that we had, searching for another property but this time near to the sea. We were delighted when we found this old town house in the little Spanish village of Maro. We love the Spanish way of life and enjoy renovating properties. Although we both grew up in the UK (me in Surrey and Nigel in Manchester) I had spent 6 years living in Spain in the 1980's and wanted to come back here to live. Nigel was looking for a new adventure so was more than happy to try Spain.

Zoe Cawthorn purchased this house in 2010

Why Zoe Cawthorn chose Nerja area

This old town house is in the quiet Spanish village of Maro. within walking distance of bars, restaurants and a couple of shops. It is 5 minutes drive into Nerja or 30 minutes walk. The property has been done up to a high standard and is very comfortable. Well situated for sight seeing, shopping or just relaxing.

What makes this house unique

It is an authentic Spanish village. The bourganvilla in the courtyard, the views of Nerja and the sea from the upstairs patio and the way it lent itself to be modernised whilst being able to keep the character of the house, are what made us choose this property over the many others that we looked at over the 8 years it took us to find it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Cosy house in nice, conveniently situated lttle village

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for four days with five and had everything we could wish for. Very good service from the owners - before, during and after our stay. Everything in the house worked. Comfy beds. Small beach with down-to-earth restaurant nearby. Super!

Unspoiled village house in Andulusia

  • 5 of 5

Superb location in quiet unspoiled village with good public transport to Nerja tourist venue, which is also walkable in 45 mins or less. All amenities and room, nice patio from which 2nd BR and BA open, adequate heating for "winter" - biased by good weather a little! Recommended ++++

Lovely villa in quiet village .

  • 5 of 5

The property was very comfortable and a real haven of peace and quiet in a very attractive village. The rear terrace was ideal for breakfast out of the hot sun and the lovely upstairs terrace great for afternoon sunbathing or relaxing in the cooler evenings. Nigel and Zoe gave us plenty of good advice about where to go and always contactable if there were any problems - but we has none! Maro itself has four small grocer shops, most selling fresh bread in the mornings. There are are several good restaurants and we ate at Entrada three times because their fresh fish was excellent! The cafe on the sqaure overlooking the sea is a wonderful place to sit amd have a drink or a good cup of coffee! The beach is lovely but take your time walking baxk up the hill. - about twenty minutes, but worth it. The nearby caves are amongst the best in Europe and a ral must! We visited the very attractive village of Frigiliana and the more mountainous town of Competto ( about 40 mins). Malaga is an attractive city with plenty to see such as the marina, the castle and Picasso museum. The resort of Nerca is 5 mins by car or take the bus.

These were all half day visits. We spent most of our week in Maro itself where the priority was relaxation!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our holiday home in Maro. The village is a lovely place to get away from it all and the friendly Spanish neighbours, make you feel like you are in the middle of Spain, but of course you so close to places like Nerja and Almunecar, which are only a few minutes drive away, if you want more shops, bars and restaurants. It is so much easier to walk back from the beach when we don't have the massive heatwave that we have just experienced! Some people in the heat of the summer do prefer to drive down, especially with young children. Other times of the year it is far easier and quicker to walk back. As you discovered other advantages of Maro is the tranquility and the access to Granada, Malaga etc. Thanks again and we hope to maybe see you again sometime. Zoe and Nigel

A place to escape the rat race!

  • 4 of 5

If you need a place to come and relax, switch off and take a slower pace of life--then the house in Maro is the place for you. Don't get me wrong if you do want it turned up a bit lively, then Nerja is less then a 10 minute drive (30min walk) away. The area offers lots to by visiting the local towns, beaches and the historical caves. We came to Maro to relax and with the help of Zoe and her wonderful house we achieved that. Would i go back? Yes...definitely. The Village offers a few good restaurants (I'd recomend La Detunda Restaurant) and the "local" bar (Cafeteria Balcon de Maro) is a perfect setting to watch the world go by (We saw a wedding from there one afternoon and on our last night there was flamenco show). The house we stayed in is beautiful and many a night (and morning) was spent sat out on the terrace sunbathing, watching the sun set or even taking Breakfast. The house is well equipped so if you wanted to cook or even BBQ, then it's all there. There is aircon in the main bedroom too. Zoe who owns the house is first class. We had a few teething problems (nothing to do with the property----car hire problems) when we arrived and she helped sort then out. Any correspondence with her was dealt with promptly and we felt like she wanted us to enjoy the place and area. There are buses that run through the village that can get you around the area for a couple of Euros. The Beach is a bit of a walk however. Not in Distance but with the steepness of the climb and its recommended that you have a certain degree of good health and steady feet to negotiate the track to and from the beach. However, like i have said, Nerja is close at hand and you can use the beaches there.. Wonderful place. We will be going back. :)

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. You are correct, it is very important to us that our guests enjoy their holiday, the house and the area. We were very happy to help out with the car problems. A couple of quick calls can often sort out these problems and help our guests get straight into enjoying their holiday and relaxing! Nerja, only being a 5 minute drive away, is great for people wanting to spend an evening in a lively town. Some people do prefer to drive to Maro beach especially when they have a lot of items to carry with them, others enjoy the walk through the countryside with the lovely views. Look forward to seeing you back in Maro again soon.

Car: not necessary

In the heart of the historic, coastal village of Maro and just a 45 minute drive from Malaga airport. This beautiful unspoilt village is one of the very few in such original condition along the entire coast. The village is still mostly inhabited by Spanish people. Just a few kilometres from the hustle and bustle of the busy coastal town of Nerja this tranquil little village is a peaceful retreat. There are a handful of restaurants and bars within a few minutes walk and Maro beach is only a 15 minute walk away through farm land. Nerja is half an hours walk along a very popular walking/jogging pathway and only a few minutes by car. The famous caves of Nerja are nearby and the picturesque mountain village of Frigiliana only a few minutes drive away. Maro is a superb location for basing yourself as it has excellent access to many popular places that are of interest to holiday-makers, such as The Alhambra Palace and the city of Granada, Sevilla, Ronda, Malaga, Cordoba and many more.

Other Activities: Famous Nerja Caves, sight-seeing, water park, aquarium
