Clean but tired flat near Portobello Road
I really wanted to love this flat. It's clean, very convenient to the tube and bus stops, and the managers were very responsive to my request to check in early. It's a decent place to stay in an interesting part of London near Portobello Road and lots of restaurants and shops. However, there are drawbacks. First of all, the toilet was barely working -- each time it was flushed it would take (I do not exaggerate) 15 - 20 minutes to refill. The heat also was a bit difficult to manage -- the system doesn't have a thermostat (apparently this is the old way of doing heat in London). Instead the heat and hot water are on a timer and come on once or twice a day for set periods of time. This means that if the outside temperatures fluctuate, the system can't really adjust. We went from cold to boiling hot (someone had left the system in the "always on" position before we got there; 24 hours later we had a sauna) to too warm as the weather changed. Luckily the window and patio doors open, so we were able to adjust that way. Finally, the flat is tired. The paint is peeling in places and just dingy in others. While I never doubted the basic cleanliness, it just isn't as appealing as I expected. The TV signal was very intermittent and the wi-fi would not work for us in the bedroom. I found the bed to be fine, my husband thought it was rock-like - that's a personal decision but you should know that it is on the firm side. So, if you are looking for a plain, convenient, clean spot in this part of London, and don't mind putting up with some plumbing and heating quirks, this is your spot.
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to leave a review - we always welcome constructive feedback on the apartment and strive to do our best to act on it.
I'm sorry that you had trouble with the heating and wish that you had called us while you were staying as there was no need for this to cause you a problem.
Each radiator has its own thermostat and can be individually adjusted to allow you the maximum comfort in each room and depending on the vagaries of the weather. The boiler should therefore not need to be touched as this usually results in unnecessary engineer visits. Similarly, the hot water system can be over-ridden - if more hot water is needed - as outlined in the House Manual. Our British loos are probably slightly quirkier than you're used to in the US, but just require a pump action on the handle and then work just fine.
We have, as we pointed out, just replaced our wifi router, to address the issue with intermittent signal. As this is a basement flat, the strength of signal will always differ, depending on where you are in the flat in relation to the router.
The flat was completely redecorated just a year ago, but thank you flagging up peeling paint - we will make a full inspection and will certainly attend to it.
Finally, I wish that we could cater for every taste in mattress. Sadly this is just not possible, so we have opted for slightly firmer rather than slightly softer, as this seems to please the majority.
Great neighborhood, clean functional apartment, and very helpful coordination. Thank you!
We had two days in London over Christmas, very much enjoyed the location, support, from Ms Francis. Would recommend, and thank you!
