Modica is one of the most picturesque towns in the province of Ragusa and the true Sicily in general. There are so many architectural beauties to see in Modica that for some years UNESCO has included Modica in the list of goods protected as a Heritage of Humanity. The city rises on an extensive plateau 15 km away from Ragusa and once crossed by two rivers. Between 1700 and 1800 Modica had 17 bridges that allowed the crossing of the streams, making it resembled Venice. Also along the banks of the rivers were various mills that were replaced by industrial ones over time, while the waters were channeled to supply the city water network. Modica's oldest nucleus revolves around the ruins of the ancient castle, where a tangle of lanes leads to the highest point of the city. Beside medieval architecture, you can admire beautiful, mostly sacred buildings of exquisite Baroque taste and suggestive noble palaces, a sign of the ancient wealth of Modica. Modica is a baroque style, since previous architectures remain very little, except the medieval center of the oldest center. Among the buildings that still have non-Baroque features, one can mention the Chiesa del Carmine, which features a Gothic portal, the ruins of the Sacramento Church and the ruins of San Niccolò Inferiore, dating back to the 12th century. One of the most beautiful baroque churches in Modica is the Church of San Giorgio, embellished by an impressive staircase of 250 steps leading up to the magnificent facade.
