About Gaby Darbyshire
I'm a Brit who moved to the States in 1999 and never left, although I spend a fair amount of time in Europe still. I work in the media industry.
Gaby Darbyshire purchased this House in 2015
Why Gaby Darbyshire chose Putnam Valley
I've been coming to Lake Oscawana with friends for years, and was looking for a house up here for at least 5 years. They don't come up too often, so when I heard that Cayuga Road was for sale, I dropped everything and ran up to see it before it went on the market. I fell in love with it, and put in an offer immediately after seeing it. The house has an incredibly good vibe, so says everyone who comes to stay. It is just a lovely, happy house. Apparently Babe Ruth used to get his hair cut in the front bedroom of the house, which in the 1920s was the barber's place.
What makes this House unique
The views are stunning: it looks across the water to a nature reserve. It's a lovely community, and Cold Spring, which is charming, is a mere 16 minutes away. Amazing hiking, access to the Hudson River, and fun on the lake: what's not to love? Oh, and the claw foot tub in the stone bathroom? That's my favourite room in the house! ;-)

Quiet lake-front retreat
Everyone enjoyed their stay. The property has lovely views of the lake and is a well-maintained and comfortable retreat. The interiors are warm and welcoming and Gaby is a lovely host.
Lovely spot to gather with friends
We all really enjoyed our stay. What a wonderful view of such a serene spot.
Thanks. Nancy! Glad you enjoyed your trip. Best wishes for the holidays. Gaby
We had a wonderful stay at this lake front property.
This property is a perfect place to stay to enjoy the lake, West Point and a visiting New York City. We used the north Hudson train to visit the city which the terminal at Garrison is a short drive. Our primary purpose for the visit was to visit our Cadet at West Point for BEAST march back and A day. The location is less than a forty minute drive to West Point Gate and it provided a great place for our Cadet to rest, paddle board on the lake and enjoy some home cooked meals. The kitchen was fully stocked and the view from the deck and living room is beautiful.
Thanks, Robert - I am so glad you had a good trip.
Magical spot in a beautiful area.
We had a wonderful time at this lovely and stylish home on Lake Oscawana. We were here for a wedding at the Garrison but especially loved the proximity to places like Manitoga and Constitution Island and Marsh , which was a fun and beautiful hike for us and the kids.
Sincerely hope to make it back to this area some day and would definitely stay here, given the chance.
Thanks, Rob. So glad you had a good time. Happy summer to you all! Gaby
Great house, unbeatable location. Living area had panoramic views of the lake which was beautiful throughout the day. Plenty of sleeping options and well equipped kitchen. Paddleboards and kayak were a great add -on. Will definately be back!
Thanks, Tony! So glad you had a good trip. Thanks for all the tips and feedback. Best for the rest of the summer. Gaby
Idyllic lake house
What feels like idyllic quiet seclusion is in reality only 15 minutes from great towns like Peekskille or Cold Spring and a little further to Beacon. Metro North can take you from all of those places into the city in about an hour.
We enjoyed all of those options for a perfect vacation for 8. We stayed at Gaby's with 3 adults and 5 children, ranging in age from 15 to 4. There was no shortage of space and there was something for everyone from board games to paddle boards. A shorts paddle, cayak or walk brought us to a great swimming area with a floating dock and small playground. We enjoyed this area daily. It was never crowded and the people we did meet were always very friendly.
The house itself has some amazing features like a kitchen that opens completely onto the deck with views of the lake by opening one door and sliding accordion style the others. During the day we opened all the doors and windows and shut off the AC and lived very comfortably even during the hottest of days. It is an older house and as such the AC would have been somewhat challenges to run 24/7 with kids running in and out maybe leaving a door open etc. To that subject as with big older houses there are always going to be some issues like sticking doors or windows or other challenges that maintaining a house of this size and vintage might bring. Gaby is actively working on all the things she knows about was quick to get back with us regarding any issues - we really didn't have any issues though just some questions here and there.
So my only advice with having said all that is if you are looking for a new modern house with arctic blast AC this isn't it. This is somewhat rustic living. Do not however confuse rustic with old and shabby. It is neither of those. The house is very clean and comfortable. I would definitely recommend to someone looking in the area.
Thanks, Ashley, for the kind review! I am so glad you guys had a great time. And yes, very good notes about the AC - definitely not an arctic blast sort of place, but the breeze is lovely. Best for the summer. Gaby
