Overview

About the property

This traditional cottage is in the centre of the quiet conservation village of Morebattle, amidst stunning scenery. The cottage has been fully restored and has all the amenities that you would expect in 21st century, including free WiFi.

The lounge/dining area leads from the porch which is there for coats, boots, etc.. You will find the table set for a cosy dinner for two. The flat screen TV has freeview and radio and a dvd is provided. Maps and walking guides are to be found along with lots of local information.

The separate kitchen has a full oven, hob, microwave, fridge and washing machine. There's a patio at the back of the cottage where you can hang clothes to dry or have a barbecue! It's a real suntrap in Summer.

Up the decorative spiral staircase is the spacious bedroom with its kingsize bed, second tv and radio. There's a kettle and all you need for tea making here. The bed is made up with cotton bedding and you choose either duvet or blankets. The large bathroom has a full bath with a shower over. Egyptian cotton towels are provided which look especially inviting on the smart towel rail and radiator.

There is excellent double glazing and insulation to take full advantage of the traditional thick stone walls and full central heating is all included in the price.

In the kitchen you will find tea, ground coffee, eggs, milk and sugar provided. We also suppkly a lovely Welcome Basket which include home made jam and local beer. Cleaning items and basics such as cling film, foil kitchen roll and toilet tissue are provided

Parking is available in front of the cottage or on the quiet road.

Morebattle has a general shop and post office, and an outstanding local butchers shop which sells excellent meat, haggis, sausages etc. Less than 200 metres from Benfield Cottage is a really good pub that serves good meals every day of the week, cask ales and good whisky. More restaurants and inns are only a short drive away in the nearby village of Yetholm, or in Kelso.

Morebattle was originally a Welsh name and Welsh is a common local name! Kelso (10 minutes drive or a bus ride) is good for supermarket shopping and interesting for its abbey etc.

Morebattle lovely, Benfield Cottage not quite what we'd hoped - some misrepresentation.

  • 2 of 5

The cottage is well situated in the village and 'adequately' equipped, but parts of the environment could do with an overhaul. E.g. cleanliness was not 100% e.g. knife block grubby, cups or glasses stick to the mats and paper hanky (or whatever... as we didn't explore) lying on floor behind bedhead; the bedroom wardrobe contains a full black bag inhibiting the use of same; only 2 bath towels (one of which was not clean) + 1 hand towel laid out (.. but we found others in a cupboard) & some photos misrepresent - the garden seats were not the pretty metal ones in the photos but plastic (not in itself a problem) but they were covered in grit and had clearly not been wiped this season; the kitchen bins are plastic (not a metal one as in photo) and they state 'push' but mechanism is the opposite and lids need to be lifted. Seating is a little outdated and the feature wall fire makes a lot of noise when switched on. Wi-fi info is insufficient as options are many and whilst the password is provided there is no mention as to which specific account to choose. When opening the downstairs front window there were substantial cobwebs containing dead flies etc.,... the accumulation of many months.

It was interesting that the visitor's book contained positive comments, although we cannot believe we are alone in finding this cottage a little 'tired' and in need of a wee bit of attention and upgrading. This is potentially a pleasant little cottage, but sadly evidences some degree of neglect. We hope that our findings for Benfield Cottage will receive some attention.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that this guest found this cottage, liked (as he admits) by many, to be so poor. We provide two bath towels and three hand towels and additional supply in the cupboard. This should have been adequate for a THREE night stay We do not accept that there was a used towel provided. We provide towels for dogs, too. We apologise that the chairs at the back courtyard had not been cleaned - the poor weather prevented that, even on his arrival day. The garden chairs in the photo were also plastic and needed replacement. The table too has been replaced. We appreciate the guest for drawing attention to the electric fire - now we know about it, we will ensure it is corrected. The electrician lives across the road and would easily popped across and have adjusted the fan mechanism. The password and the network details are clearly displayed on the router. Had he phoned us with his problem, we would have been able to help. The black bag to which he refers is normally kept on top of the wardrobe (sorry, someone had moved it). It provides alternative bedding suitable for a change in the weather. We also provide, below the bed, a full third set of bedding, should guests prefer blankets to duvet. The kitchen bins are replaced regularly and the opening mechanism should not detract from a guest's stay. We also will mention to the cleaning ladies that you felt that the mats had not been cleaned. The cottage is popular, and, generally, much enjoyed. One couple, in early April were back for their fourth stay. We agree with his point about the cushions and these are going to be replaced. In a place where most guests are out hill walking, the cushions have to take a lot of wear. We welcome suggestions regarding upgrades or problems but do prefer the guest to contact us immediately so that we can remedy these. Our intention always is to try to ensure that our holidaymaker has the best possible experience
