About Suzanne Mayhew
Hello! I'm Suzanne. I'm British and grew up in Berkshire and when taking a break from my 'proper' career in London ten years ago, I ended up visiting friends who run the Local Cure Irish Bar in Garmisch for a few months skiing and boarding. Like most people who intend on visiting Garmisch for a short break, I got hooked on the place and ended up staying! Garmisch not only has great mountains, skiing and everything you could wish for in terms of outdoor activites, it is also a really nice place to live- there's a good mix of locals and international residents who have moved here. We have now spent 10 years being based in Garmisch, with interludes back in Brighton in the UK, and my son has grown up here. I really want to help people make the most of their stay in the local area and really welcome enquiries about the area and planning your stay- such as how to organise a surprise paragliding flight that will land in view of the house, to recommend an english ( or german) speaking babysitter, how to hire a horse-drawn carriage for those special occasions! Just ask!
Suzanne Mayhew purchased this Apartment in 2009
Why Suzanne Mayhew chose Garmisch-Partenkirchen
I used to be a property developer in Brighton- and couldn't believe it when the Garmisch estate agent showed me what is now The Meadow House. A building with potentially the best view in Garmisch- directly on the meadows, with no future worries about anyone building in front of the house as it is zoned farmland, great off-road parking and it was a scruffy disused office building and warehouse with bars on the very small windows! What a waste! Once the planning permission had been granted to turn the building into three luxury apartments, I couldn't wait to get started. Working with a well-respected local carpenter, we raised the roof in November 2010 to create the new all wood Loft apartment, knocked all the bars off the windows and put as much glass on the picture postcard view side as possible, adding a huge wooden balcony and terrace. We welcomed our first guests in the summer of 2011- and since then have had many repeat visitors which has been lovely. We really have had some truly lovely families and groups of people staying from all over the world, from the UK, Australia, Canada, Korea, the USA, Mexico, Egypt, Palestine, UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, Italy, Germany, Turkey, The Netherlands,France, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Portugal and Spain- Garmisch really is an international destination!

Property was in a great location with quick access to downtown and trails. View of Zugspitze was awesome. Parking was a bit of an issue when all the apartments were full, but other than that-a great experience.
Pictures don't do justice
The views in person from the Loft were even more amazing in person. The Loft accommodations were great and everything was as expected. The host was helpful and responded to all additional requests promptly.
Would definitely love to stay again.
My children had only one complaint. The WIFI was too slow. :)
Thank you again!
We have spent many happy holidays staying at The Old Warehouse. We have now stayed in all four apartments. They are all very clean, comfortable and well equipped..... A home away from home. The views from all apartments are stunning. Ski bus is very convenient and very reliable. We have booked for next year already!
Thank you Suzanne
Beautiful Location but Subpar Apartment Management
The location of this apartment is amazing. We had high hopes; however, poor execution by the owner made the stay horrible in the beginning and mediocre the last few days.
First, the owner never sent us the information on gaining access to the apartment. When we arrived exactly at checkin time, no one was there to meet us, and we were unable to get in contact with the owner for over an hour.
Second, when we finally learned that the owner had simply forgotten to send us the information on accessing the lockbox where the apartment key was, we entered a filthy apartment that had not been cleaned after the previous tenants had left.
Third, while we waited over an hour hoping we would find out how to enter the apartment, we bought groceries. When we entered the apartment, we discovered that the refrigerator was off and ended up ruining all of the frozen food and some of the refrigerated food we bought before it got cod (took about 15 hours).
Fourth, ALL of the radiators in the apartment were turned off. This apartment uses hot water radiators to provide heat and none of them were turned on. It was -3ºC outside and absolutely freezing inside.
The good news is that the owner, Suzanne, tried very hard to make things right after we finally got in communication with her. She gave us the lock box code, contacted her normal cleaning crew for a late evening cleaning, and had a local person (she no longer lives in Garmisch despite what the advertisement says) come out to check the radiators. In the end, the apartment was heated except for the main bathroom which has two radiators, but neither worked.
Overall, I would recommend this apartment as long as you understand you need to initiate communication with the owner far more frequently in the week prior to your stay than most other Home Away locations.
Final small notes...beware the parking situation. The apartment listing states there is room for 2 cars for each apartment. This is true by cramming the cars in like sardines. Unfortunately, if you rent 'the Loft" apartment like we did, the falling down fence of her neighbor eliminates one of your two parking spots. We were not able to fit our car as advertised. The bathroom shower does not drain, and after a 2 minutes shower you will be ankle deep in water. You will have to stop showering for 5 minutes to allow the water to slowly drain to avoid flooding the bathroom floor. All of the "linens" appear to be as old as the apartment.
This was a one off misunderstanding between our main cleaner and the cleaner who was covering for her on her holiday. It meant that although I and our main housekeeper thought the apartment had been readied in time for the guests, it hadn't been. I thought the guests had already been sent the arrival information and as I was driving to Germany when they called at check in, I didn't check the missed call until I stopped an hour later.
This was obviously very annoying for the guests, who had to wait an hour- and then apartment not prepared when they did get in. However, as soon as we found this out, Nikolina was round in 15 minutes to clean the apartment, despite being almost on her way back home for Croatia for Christmas. We ventilated all the radiators- which were working, just not switched on . I have no idea why the previous guests had turned them all completely off and also switched off the fridge. I only found out the shower wasn't draining after reading this review a few days after the guests had left. It was fixed within the hour- as it would have been had Richard let me know about it during his stay. We have never had any other bad reviews about parking, which is usually fine.
The oldest linens we have a 4 years old, the apartment was first let in 2011. Since then we regularly replace and update all our bedlinen and towels.
I can only apologise for the mix up. I have also refunded Richard 100 euros . We do want our guests to have a great experience and I am so sorry that this wasn't the case this time.
Great views and lots of space!
We had a great time at this place. The views of the mountains each morning made our stay so memorable! This place is also so close to town and other places it makes it very convenient for day trips! Thank you again for a wonderful time!
This property has everything, close to town and skiing all the amenities you need and the most wonderful view. My daughter says it’s like living in a screen saver.
The Meadow House directly overlooks the Grainau meadows and the Zugspitze mountain range- the highest in Germany. Cross-country ski trails are on the doorstep and you can watch skiers and snowboarders on the Kandahar and Olympia ski pistes from the windows. The cable cars are a 2 minute drive, The Loisach river is 200 m. away. The Austrian ski resorts of Lermoos and Ehrwald are also just 15 minutes by car. The paragliding school lands in the field next door. In the summer Garmisch is a mecca for hikers, bikers, climbers and canoeists. The Eibsee lake at the foot of the Zugspitze offers an idyllic mountain backdrop to swimming or boating. There are also great indoor and outdoor pools.Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a picturesque Bavarian town with many traditional restaurants, good shopping and a good night life. For history buffs, King Ludwig's fairytale castle Neuschwanstein is an hours drive and another palace- Schloss Linderhof a mere 30 minutes. Munich and Innsbruck are easily accessible
Other Activities: Rafting, hiking, cross-country skiing, kayaking, swimming in lakes and outdoor pools in summer, local farmers' markets, golf courses
Golf: There are three 18 hole golf courses- with spectacular mountain backdrops within a 20 minute drive- in Garmisch-Burgrain, in Oberau and also in Ehrwald in the neighbouring Austrian Tyrol.
Ski: Garmisch has two main ski areas- the Classic area which links the Hausberg, Kreuzeck and Alspitz lifts and the Glacial skiing area up on the Zugspitze.
The Hausberg area is where most of the ski and board schools are based with a great easy blue and a magic carpet area for children surrounded by lots of great bars and restaurants. There are reds or a black down to the valley from here. There are fantastic runs with spectacular views for beginners and for advanced skiers. The Olympic downhill run and the World Cup Kandahar are blacks which could test even professional skiers and the lifts have all been updated recently due to Garmisch hosting the 2011 Skiing World Championships.
The larger skipass includes the Austrian Tyrolean resorts of Lermoos and Ehrwald which are a mere 20 minutes by car. Without a car, it is a 15 minute walk to the lifts from the Meadow House- or we have a bus stop right outside the house. Please look at www.zugspitze.de for more ski maps and prices.
