We are Laury & Joe, a French & American couple. We are restoring this beautiful house situated in the center of a charming traditional French village. Nearby are spectacular views of the Pyrenees, trails for biking, walking & hiking, a lake for swimming, sailing or canoeing. An equestrian center is minutes away as well as countless historical castles and museums, surrounded by the beautiful wine country of the Languedoc. Come enjoy this natural beauty of the South of France in our home.
Our property is actually 3 houses. The first one is the Maison de Maitre, the main one, which is an 18th century house that Joe and Laury are currently renovating. It provides the main entrance and faces the main market square.
One takes the main staircase to access the next house, which we call the Bridge House, because there is a bridge which crosses a small court yard. This a 13th century house which has just been renovated.
The third house is actually a former ruin with its original stone facade still standing so it serves as a private terrace.
There are two staircases in the Bridge House, with no lift.
In the Bridge House there is a wonderful, fully equipped kitchen and a big dining/living room area upstairs. There are two bedrooms upstairs with a spiral staircase to a loft mezzanine which has a single bed. And another loft with a ladder with a single bed. Recommended for teenagers and older.
Children could sleep on mattresses in living room area.
There is a shared bathroom with a shower in the upstairs.
Downstairs, the Romantic bedroom is off the kitchen and connects to the Romantic bathroom which has a luxurious claw foot tub with instant hot water. This is a large ensuite room.
There is an additional 3rd bathroom with shower by the entrance to the Bridge house.
We have a sunny terrace in the back of the Bridge House that guests may use. It is a work in progress but is very nice useable space, especially for meals on a warm summer's day. Please note there are brick steps and a wooden ladder in use on the terrace.
Lake Montbel is nearby (10 minutes by car, 20 minutes by bike and 30 minutes walking) and offers swimming, canoeing and sailing. The Languedoc wine region, stretches west towards the Mediterranean and is a must for wine lovers. For skiing in the winter and biking in the summer, the Pyrenees are within an hour's drive with a stunning view from Chalabre.
Here in Chalabre one can find biking tours, wine tours, and an equestrian centre. Touring the area by car one travels through charming little villages with festivals, markets, museums and historical castles and chateaus.
Closest towns: Mirepoix to the north, Limoux to the east, and Foix to the west. See the links listed above for more details.
