Welcome to Tartas, a haven of peace set in the midst of the green vineyards of Bordeaux.
Tartas is an elegant, nineteenth century Maison du Maitre (or manor house), surrounded by 2.5 acres of formal and romantic gardens. A chestnut-lined drive leads to the house, passing by the turreted pigeonnier. The house is furnished with antiques and fine art, yet equipped in 21st century comfort. Tranquil, yet only a short drive from the world famous wine centres of St Emilion and Pomerol, the cosmopolitan art centre of Bordeaux and the historic town of Castillon La Bataille.
With five bedrooms, it is large enough to entertain your family and friends and yet spacious enough to find a quiet place to read and relax.
On the ground floor there is a large salon which combines a traditional sitting room with an open fire and a dining room which is ideal for entertaining up to 14 guests. The central doors open onto to the terrace, overlooking the gardens, which is perfect for drinks in the Summer.
To one side there is a entrance hall/study and to the other there is a snug with television, satellite TV and CD.s. Next door there is a traditional French kitchen (quarry tiles and woodburner) equipped with everything you need to create your own French cuisine. Adjoining the kitchen is a bright and airy laundry room with a large, modern fridge, Butler’s sink and washing machine.
A graceful hallway leads to a traditional, French wooden staircase and the landing on the first floor where there is an extensive collection of books in French and English and games. A comfortable armchair and table are provided whilst you select your reading. There are three large double bedrooms, each en suite. Some prefer the four poster room with ensuite shower room, some the larger middle room with double windows and ensuite bathroom, while others opt for the East side with en suite shower room and endless views over the tiled roof and sunrise.
A steep wooden stairway leads to the second floor where there are two spacious loft rooms; perfect for children, teenagers or creative types. The shared bathroom between them has an arresting view over the gardens and vines; the best in the house.
The house is furnished exactly as it should be – with 18th and 19th century antiques from England and France. There is a collection of paintings and drawings from notable European artists. In the evening the salon glows with light from the chandeliers and antique mirrors. As the sun sets the salon is flooded with natural light.
Tartas is set in more than 2.5 acres of romantic, mature gardens. Immediately outside the house there is a spacious, south facing terrace, partially shaded by an ancient yew tree whilst the sun trap boasts fragrant roses and muscat grapes. Wood is provided for the fire pit for evenings spent star-gazing.
The herbaceous borders were inspired by the English Cottage garden and they are filled with roses, flowering herbs and fruit trees. The lawns slope to a large 12 metre pool with a view of ancient cedars and pine. We have recently installed a heat exchanger to ensure the pool is warm throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn. There is also an electric cover for peace of mind. Deckchairs are provided and there are inflatables, barbecue and fridge in the pigeonnier which serves as a pool house.
There are two petanque courts where you can play and perfect your game of boules. There is also a croquet lawn and badminton.
While Tartas is tranquil, it is a few minutes from the river Dordogne, only a short drive to the World Heritage Site and famous wine region of St Emilion and less than an hour from the shining city of Bordeaux. Nearby there is golf, horse riding, lake swimming and fishing, kayaking and cycling rentals. The area teems with fine restaurants and historic chateaux.
Tartas is equipped with everything you will need. The house itself is 2 km outside the village of Ruch, down a country lane, up a track and a world away from any cares.
