About Gillie Farquhar-Thomson
My family moved to Birdham in 1947 and Martins Cottage has been in family ownership since that date. I grew up in Birdham and went to school in Chichester. My own family have also grown up here. We all love this area. We have everything! We have a wonderful sandy beach minutes away, The Chichester Harbour is just down the road and historic Chichester on our door step. To add to that we have The South Downs National Park just a 15 minute drive away. There is so much to do here and no one is ever bored.
Gillie Farquhar-Thomson purchased this Cottage in 2007
Why Gillie Farquhar-Thomson chose Birdham
Recently we had a small flock of sheep in our paddock. When we gave them up we decided to turn the hay and lambing barn into two semi detached luxury holiday cottages. The cottages are in a perfect situation. They sit well back from our quiet country lane, they face South West and are full of sunshine. To add to that they look out over our four acre meadoiw that is teeming with wildlife.
What makes this Cottage unique
I can honestly say that I have never had a complaint! Our Visitor Books are full of the most wonderful reviews. Visitors on departure look so well and relaxed The cottages are extremely clean, warm, comfortable, light and sunny. You could not fail to have a wonderful time.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
This is a wonderful property with all the necessary amenities and very well presented. Gillie was a lovely host who stayed in contact to ensure we arrived safely and even found the time to come and greet us. Would definitely come back here again.
Too isolated with poor communication
As a single woman, the location was far too remote and the apartment had very poor lighting which made me feel very unsafe and frightened to return after dark. There was no mobile signal at all and wi-fi was intermittent so you couldn’t make calls of any kind which was extremely annoying as I was house hunting so missed Agents calls! It prevented me keeping in touch with family too, so increased the feeling of complete isolation.
I also had my dog with me and was not informed that he wasn’t allowed upstairs so ended up sleeping in the single bed downstairs.
I had booked 16 nights but was forced to leave after 5 as it was impossible to stay under these circumstances. I am currently awaiting a response from the Owner as I had to pay again for accommodation in a better location with internet and mobile connection.
I’m sure that it is a nice quiet place to stay in the summer when the inadequate lighting and isolated location would not be such an issue!
Debbie booked 16 nights in Foxglove. She had just left her home of 25 years and was seeking to buy a property in this area. She was obviously in an emotional state. I was very willing to help her look for a property. I have lived most of my life in this area.
Foxglove is located in Martins Lane - the middle of Birdham village. Not remote at all. Debbie could have checked the location on Google maps. At the time of her stay Martins Lane was ablaze with Christmas lights and Foxglove's outside lights were on all night. In the lane there are several ladies living on their own including myself!
Our Wifi speeds are above average and inter calls can be easily made. Mobile reception can be picked up in parts of the cottage and always in the garden.
When guests arrive with a dog, I ask if they would be kind enough not let the dog go upstairs for obvious reasons. Debbie had a very large hairy dog. She told me he did not go upstairs.
Poor Debbie. I hope she is happy in her new rental.
We had a wonderful week at Foxglove. The living space is great, the grounds beautiful and Gillie was a wonderful host. The cottage is modern and very well equipped and our dog loved running around the huge outdoor space.
A great base for visiting the many pretty villages and beaches in the area.
I have recommended Martins Cottage it to all my friends and we will definitely be back.
Thank you so much for posting such a wonderful review. I so much enjoyed having you all to stay and I am so pleased you loved everything here. Very much hoping you will come back soon.
Really lovely time at the cottage
Stayed here for a few days autumn break. It was very lovely, the cottage was just as described and very comfortable . The surrounding garden/ land very pretty. We wanted to do some walking and discovered plenty of walks we could do from the cottage. It’s a great variety and mix of rural and coastal Marine landscape. Highly recommended!
Thank you Christine for such a nice review.which is much appreciated. It was so nice having you both to stay and I hope you will come to stay again.
Beautifully set in a quiet lane away from noise with lovely views over garden and meadow.
Very comfortable accommodation and well equipped. Almost everything supplied to provide a stress free holiday. Gillie has thought of everything. Just a short walk to Chichester Lock and plenty of good pubs and eating places close by. Foxes, pheasants and other wildlife in evidence.
Thanks for making your booking with us. Itwas a pleasure having you to stay. Please come again
Lovely stay here. Gillie was welcoming, and the cottage was just what we needed for a short stay with our 7 month old. The area is lovely and would like to explore it more again.
Thank you for staying with us and for your kind words. We enjoyed your visit.
