Born in S. Miguel Azores, in the late 1960's then in my early teens and a result of hard economic oppression, my family among many others uprooted and hoped on board the immigration convoy ending up in the country that have adopted as my home Canada. Ready to work hard with the hope for a brighter future. Over the years visiting S. Miguel often, the love for the Azores especially São Miguel Island, and the passion for nature and ocean lead to the purchase of this piece of paradise. My family and I We would be honored at the opportunity to have you make this your holiday home too. Over the years we remain hard at work making things right for you to come and enjoy; we welcome you, and now won't you let us be the ones to host your stay to this wonderful & enchanting Island of São Miguel Ponta Delgada Portugal Azores
Josie Frazao purchased this bungalow in 2007
This location is perfect, with easy access to all parts of the Island. We purchased this home for the simple fact that it is situated right by the ocean! This very cozy home provides us with plenty of privacy. We enjoy our daily walks through the property all the way to ocean side. The abundant six acre parcel of land surrounded by many century old trees and the sound of chirping birds is very delightful. The fact that this house up until the early 1940’s was the local primary school for the then very small population of this town became very intriguing to us. This town’s population today is less than 2000. Here we satisfy our love for the ocean by snorkeling and fishing alone or by joining the locals. We also love driving right into our property via an automated gate, we park in total privacy, We love the fact that this location offers the best of both, privacy and a sense of being disconnected from the rest of the world, while at the same time it is well balanced with all the conveniences very close by.
The very appealing unique feature of this home is that you can walk down its very own private way all the way to the ocean; you can go for a swim or you can just take in the ocean's grandeur and amazing endless views. The bedrooms are air conditioned with the latest Panasonic ultra quite units. This home up until the early 1900's was the town's school. Homes like this one that offers tradition, great service on request, direct access to the ocean is not the norm here. Apart from this one, there are no homes that have direct access to the ocean. This is mainly due to the fact that like other island in the archipelago São Miguel nature is that of mostly cliffs around the ocean. The added fact that the original stone oven is still operational, and today is being used to cook authentic Azorean food is an absolute gem! The very thick stone walls of this house add a constant regulated indoor temperature, making it a very cozy place to spend a lot of time indoors. We carefully renovated, by bringing the entire house up to date, while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the old world charm; Most recently, year end of 2012 we have introduced the private in property parking behind a remote controlled gate. For our Golf enthusiasts We have a special arrangement with the Batalha Golf; We offer you the same special Golf rates as the Hotels that cater to Golf Tournaments!
Our experience at Sao Miguel was fantastic. We didn’t expect such a wonderful island. It’s really magic. Your house it’s fantastic, and it’s located at a very calm place.
We will recommend to visit Sao Miguel to our friends and family, and probably we will visit the other islands in a nearly future.
Thanks for all,
This beautiful home is in the quiet north coastal town of Calhetas, but is just a short drive to the larger "cities" of Ponta Delgada & Ribeira Grande. Josie Frazao, the owner, has truly thought of everything needed for a comfortable, well equipped home. The property is well maintained, and has 3 small patios for relaxation; the very large yard extends right down to the ocean. Paula, the caretaker, is a gem! She met us at the airport, waited for us to get our rental car (which Josie arranged for us), then we followed her for the 20 minute drive from the airport to the house. Later that day, she delivered a delicious Azorean meal for us; what a treat not to have to cook or go out to eat after an overnight flight! Her food was so good that later during our stay, we had her cook for us again. We spent 2 weeks exploring this most beautiful island, with great hiking, fabulous restaurants, and lovely, pastoral scenery. For restaurants, we recommend A Tasca in Ponta Delgada, Associacao Agricola de Sao Miguel in Rabo de Peixe, Alabote in Ribeira Grande, and for a special occasion, Terra Nostra Garden in Furnas. We loved this rental, and would highly recommend it to others.
We were met at the airport by Paula, house manager for Josie, the owner. Paula led us to the house, stopping on the way to show us the grocery store. At the house , Paula had a full dinner prepared--salad, seafood casserole, chicken, dessert, and wine. Then she ran to the bakery and bought warm bread. We actually made 2-1/2 meals out of it--it was too good to waste.
The house was spotless and better equipped--with dishes, glasses, utensils, and the like--than any vacation place I've rented in the past. The property backs up to the shore but it is a long property so you can't actually see the ocean without taking a short walk to the back of the property. The shore is mostly jagged black lava and the beach is small; it was good for a short walk or two but we mostly took advantage of the house's central location to see the sights on the island. We were able to drive anywhere on the island in probably under an hour (I didn't really time it as there were sights to see along the way, for example, many of the roads were lined with blooming hydrangeas (it was late May/early June).
The living area was small but cozy and the two bedrooms were nice sizes. It was convenient having two baths and showers. We especially appreciated the convenience of a clothes washer and dryer because we could pack less clothing. There were plenty of towels.
The owner, Josie, was a pleasure to work with; she responded almost immediately to emails and offered to help with things like car rentals.
The island is beautiful with some really spectacular scenery. The first day we went to Furnas and walked around the lake. There we stumbled upon Terra Nostra Park. Don't miss this park--the trails wind thru labeled fauna of all kinds, from bamboo to camilias. There is also a large thermally heated wading pool so bring swimsuits just in case. Sete Cidades, on the other end of the island, contains two large waterfilled craters that are absolutely breathtaking when viewed from the lookouts on the crater's rim. We spent 6 days on the island and every day was filled with sightseeing or hiking.
I would recommend Josie's place to my friends and would return there if we are lucky enough to go back to Sao Miguel in the future..
From the beginning of planning our trip Josie was very helpful in providing recommendations on a rental vehicle and attractions in the Azores. This home was centrally located which allowed us to easily explore the whole island. We were greeted at the airport by Nicole who helped us get acclimated after our trip. We later met Paula who showed us the beautiful home and property-with private beach! Paula made us a wonderful welcome dinner which was much appreciated after our travels. Paula even went so far as to drive to the airport to return something we left behind. The home was clean and well kept. Since we've returned home we have been recommending the Azores and this vacation house to friends and family.
We loved exploring the Azores. Some of our favorite activities were beautiful views at Nordeste and the town of Nordeste, Mosteiros and Sete Cidades. We loved the hot springs in Calderia Velha and the town of Furnas. Each day we looked forward to returning to our private home where we would relax with a glass of wine on the outdoor deck. We also loved the food--some of our favorite restaurants were Alabote in Ribeira Grande and Restaurante Ondas do Mar in Lagoa each with ocean views. The driving was easy with well labeled street signs and open roads. We hope to return some day!

We were amazed on our arrival at how beautifully clean the house was, and how much attention to detail had been given - it lacked for nothing! We will never forget the beautiful centrepiece on the table and the arrangement of flowers.
The meal and and groceries that Paula had provided were so much more than we expected. Speaking of Paula, we cannot praise her high enough. She was so helpful, and especially so when one of us needed a doctor urgently, giving up her time to take us in to the clinic in Ponta Delgada, and acting as translator when required. We were lucky enough to meet Josie and her daughter Christina in Ponta Delgada, they were so welcoming and it was so nice to be able to put "faces to names". Sao Miguel is a beautiful island and our favourite attractions were visits to Sete Cidades and the Terra Nostra Gardens at Furnas. The island and Josie's house are both highly recommended.
This home was very clean, comfortable and well equipped. It surpassed our expectations for a rental house. It was stocked with everything you could ever need or want while staying there. It had a very warm and inviting décor. We had plenty of towels, dishes, cooking items, even an espresso machine. The grill was available to us along with lounge chairs, sitting areas and much privacy outside. There was private parking in the back of the house so we didn't have to park the rental car on the street. And the best part of all was the ocean access. A walk through the backyard took us right out to the ocean shore. What more could you ask for?!!
We were greeted at the airport by Paula, a really wonderful person. She made sure we had a nice start to our vacation by fixing us a delicious dinner. She supplied us with items such as milk, coffee, tea, orange juice, bread, butter...so we did not have to run out to the store when we first arrived. She even ran out to the bakery to get some more fresh bread and pastries. Mmm! It was all so good! Paula was so kind and always just a phone call away if we needed anything. She helped arrange a whale watching tour for us, even leading us there so we didn't lose our way. She led us back to the airport on our last day as well! Then we had some troubles with our rental car and airline tickets, but she helped us with those matters, too, staying with us at the airport to resolve these issues and interpret for us. Paula really did care about us having a good time there and making our vacation relaxing and enjoyable. And it was also obvious that Josie, the owner of the house, cared about that as well.
The island is just breathtaking! It was a wonderful vacation, in large part because of this house and the people associated with it. We would love to go back someday and when we do we will be booking again with Josie. Thank you Josie and Paula for everything! Joe and Jeanine
We had a wonderful time visiting the Azores, and our stay at Josie's lovely home made it even more wonderful. We were greeted at the airport by Nicole, who showed us all around town and then led us to the market to help us find our food. Paula greeted us at the home, and made sure we had every comfort from bathrobes to beach towels to a most delicious home cooked meal upon our arrival. The home is small but gracious. It was perfect for our family of two adults and three children ages 11,9, and 4. The yard is very large and fun to play in, and the beach at the end of the property is breathtaking. The kitchen is well equipped and the property is safe, secure, and lovely. If you are looking for peace, quiet, and natural beauty with comforts of home, this is your spot. Enjoy!!!
