Upscale 'main house' with available adjacent cabin (#480979) for rental as well!
The Great River Retreat (main house to the currently rented guest House VRBO Listing #480979) nestled between the small riverside towns of Alma and Nelson, Wisconsin, this home sits on the backwaters of the Mississippi. It is fully furnished and every detail of the house has been redone in the past few years. Whether you enjoy your evenings sitting by the fireplace, watching a movie on the big screen, socializing by the bar, listening to the trains roll through on the beautifully screened porch (overlooking the river), or spend it by the campfire - you will find a way to cozy in! You'll notice our modern decor with an inviting outdoor touch throughout the home keeping it very comfortable along with the beautiful landscaping you'll enjoy as you make your way around the property. Spring of 2016, we took the 3 car garage and workout room and turned it into a HUGE rec room for a great place for our groups to gather and entertain without ever having to leave the property! Included in the rec room is a custom made bar, dart board, pool table and a social nook with 3 comfy couches to hang out and enjoy. The room above the rec room is a bonus room with additional sleeping (3 fulls and 3 twin beds) to accommodate larger groups.
If you're looking for an escape for larger groups check out our adjacent property (which is set up to sleep 6 comfortably) for availability and book them both!!
As a guest here, you’ll have access to the water and use of our dock so that you can fish, swim, or just relax. A pontoon will be available during the summer to rent if you'd like to add some fun to your stay!

Exceptional Property and Owners
Celebrating a birthday with guests ranging in age from 2 to 75 years old takes much investigating and one needs to take into careful consideration the space and amenities. I found the Great River Retreat online and was excited to see if it met all our requirements. It did!! The owners were very receptive and accommodating to our basic requests. It was obvious from our first steps into the retreat that the space had either been remodeled or kept updated with care. We are frequent travelers, as such, have experienced a variety of outstanding as well as huge disappointing properties, this one is a GEM! I would like to thank the owners for providing us with a wonderful space to celebrate with 10 guests, and it’s within a hour plus driving distance from home.
Tucked away down by the river
The cabin is well kept and the game room and sleeping loft area feels like a new addition. Overall the cabin has many comfy nooks that are tucked away which makes the house feel very large. Our group spent most of our time in the large game room but the kitchen and outdoor areas were adequately sized as well. The drive down from the metro was scenic and the view of the river from the property was great as well. There will be many trains that pass by on the tracks along the river bank but this does not make it feel cut off from the river at all. We were a bit skeptical of the sleeping loft but the beds were comfy and small dividing walls kept it private enough. All in all the members in our group of 12 would recommend.
Had a great time. It was perfect for our group.
It had everything we needed and more. The three season porch was great and we played pool and darts in the evenings.
Stayed here with some family and friends to celebrate a bride to be! Jes and Jeremiah were extremely helpful and amazing with accommodations and recommendations! Its centrally located near so many great wineries and we had a terrific time.
Great home with lots of space. Enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.
Great for a big group
Our group had a great time at The Great River Retreat. Lots of room and plenty of sleeping space. The location is great and the views of the sunset are spectacular. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you again Jeremiah and Jessica for letting us enjoy your place.
Stay on the backwaters of the Mississippi River and enjoy gorgeous views of the water, trains passing by, and the abundant wildlife. Take a day trip to explore the many wineries in the area and wine taste your way up and down the Great Mississippi River Road. While you're here you can hike up to Buena Vista Park and experience the stunning view from a top the bluffs of Alma, WI. Or, if you'd rather, take a nice drive along the river to soak in views of the bluffs, wildlife, and river. Another must see is the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN, featuring live eagles. If you're visiting us in the winter don't forget to bring your skis, snowboard, or snowshoes. If you like fishing, we've got that too! So again, if it's winter, pack your ice shack and warm clothes and Flotty will show you where all the fish are biting. We've also got great biking trails and roads if you are a cyclist. If you like boating, kayaking, canoeing, or just about any other water sport we've got the perfect location for you to do all of those things as well. Feel free to bring your boat and tie it up at our dock or rent our Pontoon or Jet Ski, Into golfing? Yes, we have that too! Like campfires? Perfect, we've got a great fire pit for roasting s'mores. To experience something really unique, add Suncrest Gardens to your list. Suncrest Gardens has the best pizza in the area, live music many nights, and a nice fire to keep you warm as the evening fades away. Only catch is you have to bring your table, chairs, plates, napkins, and silverware but no worries you can borrow ours. You can also explore the many small river towns along the Mississippi, do some shopping, eating, or antiquing. Lastly, if you love deep-fried cheese curds, or if you have no idea what those are, than you must go to Pioneer (a 10-minute boat ride) and you'll have the best hand-battered white cheese curds Wisconsin (or anywhere else) has to offer. Not to mention, the Saturday night prime rib that melts in your mouth. Please also visit our website and visit our Facebook page for the latest happenings:
