Situated in Ids-Saint-Roch, a marvellous spot in the Berry, « Le Trait » is a renovated small farmhouse we have converted into a 6-person cottage.
You will find on the ground floor a cosy living room with typical stone walls and access to the garden, a master bedroom (double bed) with en-suite bathroom (private toilet, walk-in shower, wash basin), a fully-equipped kitchen (microwave, cooker, oven, dishwasher, fridge and washing-machine) and a second bathroom with large bath and toilet.
Upstairs, another 2 bedrooms (double beds, single beds possible upon request).
The garden is fully fenced and offers a gorgeous view over the Arnon valley. You can also enjoy the swimming-pool (8 m X 4 m) or the terrace with barbecue.
We offer our guests free wifi and a personal approach : tourist brochures and books (included our own favourites )are available at the gîte and we are very happy to help you with our advice and recommendations (ex restaurant where dogs are welcome, tips for the kids,...). We live at +/- 15 km from Le Trait, so you enjoy full privacy during your holiday, but we are near enough to assist you should there be a problem.
Our gîte is non-smoking. Pets (well educated) are welcome !
« Le Trait » is located just outside the centre of Ids-St-Roch, a peaceful village in the Arnon valley, at 5 minutes from Lignieres, where you find all shopping facilities.
We also rent out another gîte, Le Petit Berthais, situated in the nearby Pruniers offering sleeps to 4-5 people, also with private pool. Just check out on : http://www.homeaway.co.uk/p1843693
Many years ago, I discovered for the first time the Berry, a region totally unknown for me. I immediately lost my heart since the Berry really represents the authentic and unspoiled french countryside I so much love.
In 2008, my husband and I decided to buy a house as a holiday home for ourselves and in 2011 we bought Le Trait (in Ids Saint Roch), so we could offer the possibility to other people to discover this lovely region and share our passion!
More recently we acquired Le Petit Berthais (in Pruniers), renovated it and as of 2016 will also rent it out.
At the moment, we are commuting between Belgium, where we are working, and France, but we're spending our holidays and most of our weekends in the Berry. This means that we are able to welcome our guests personally at arrival and give them a small tour of the house !
As of 2016 we'll be moving to France permanently something we're very much looking forward to since we are feeling so very much at home in Le Berry !
Iris De Cauwer purchased this cottage in 2010
- private pool (4x8m)
- fully fenced garden
- great view from the house, the pool and the terrace on the Arnon Valley
- pets allowed
We stayed for 2 weeks in Le Trait, situated on the hill above Ids-St-Roch. We were looking for a quiet escape in the country and we found it. We had a 1 year old and a 2 year old so our exploring was somewhat limited.
The house is perfectly perched with views over the Arnon valley and a number of quiet villages and towns around to explore. Iris and Rudy where quick to respond with any issues we had with the house and our stay.
Some information you might find useful:
1. The house is bigger than you would think from the photos. The main bedroom and bathroom are large, and had an alcove where we put out one year old.
2. There is a great play park in Touchay which our 2 year old loved. There is table tennis, volleyball and basketball court and a range of external exercise machines.
3. There is a wonderful ford, bridge and picnic spot at the bottom of the hill from Touchay. Our toddler loved splashing in the river.
4. Be aware the internet is quite slow (as you would expect in rural france), but fast enough to check emails. I measured it at ~ 1 MBS.
5. The house has another 'garden' attached to the side. I say garden but really its a small wood. Our 2 year old loved collecting sticks, running through the trees and finding pine cones.
6. We only ate out twice, once at the cafe in Ids-St-Roch (fantastic) and once at the Creperie in Ligniere. Both offered excellent value for money.
7. Rudy and Iris put stair gates in for us and also had a cot set up! Great :)
Overall we had a great stay, and hope to return maybe in a few years when the kids are older to do some exploring.
p.s. I've now created a Strava segment to run up the hill from Ids-St-Roch to the house - good luck!
We could not have been more delighted with what we found in Le Trait.
Four of us travelled for a two week vacation and brought our dog for the first time and the first thing we noticed was how secure the property was from a dog perspective. It was dog friendly and owner friendly. Once the gate was closed the dog was secure.
Then there were the views - Oh My God - you could see forever and the situation of the pool made it almost an infinity pool. The robot did a brilliant job twice a day. Our only complaint was that we didn't get a thunderstorm to watch in the panorama.
The house was full of rustic charm but very comfortable and when closed up before full sun hit the windows it kept beautifully cool even in 40C weather.
Shopping and restaurants are in plentiful supply especially in Lignireres but also Le Trait, via Chateauroux is only a 2-hour train journey to Paris.
Iris and Rudy were wonderful hosts who welcomed us and then left us to contact if we needed them. We thank both of them for the location and peace which give a blissful vacation.
We had a great time at Le Trait. Iris & Rudy were both very nice and helpful as we were looking to purchase a house.
The gite, garden and pool were perfect and very comfortable and clean and fantastic views. We loved the 2 weeks in Ids St Roch and would highly recommend this gite. The area is also beautiful with lots of lakes and views of the countryside. definitely a place to revisit
We have just returned for a lovely stay in the cottage in Le Trait. We were a party of three adults and two young children. The cottage was well equipped to meet the needs of our stay with cot and highchair provided. The inside is clean and cosy and the owners have provided a dvd player and selection of dvds which was a pleasant surprise when we had finished our own selection. However the best place to be was definitely outside enjoying the magnificent scenery and a dip in the well maintained pool. The views from the garden were breath-taking and the tranquillity of the area made our stay very relaxing!
The surrounding areas have a lot to offer which has been detailed in a guide by the owner. Tourist information booklets have also been provided to help guide you around. There is a bakery with small shop within walking distance and a restaurant in Ids Saint Roch although we found the food and atmosphere much better at the 7 soeurs in Touchay which is also accessible by foot.
We really enjoyed our week at the cottage and would definitely go back and recommend this rental to friends and family
Very much enjoyed our stay. Met the owners who were very friendly and thoughtful in providing excellent information. Pool was nice, and the view from the gite is wonderful. The cottage was comfortable. The Berry region is lovely, very rural and unspoilt.
We had a very good stay at Le Trait. House is great, so are the gardens and the new pool. The bedrooms are spacious, a very handy kitchen/diner with all we needed for 2 weeks (and I do enjoy cooking). No noise around the house. Plenty of room for the kids to run around, explore (including a meadow next door). Not really many insects either, very good shutters for black nights in the bedrooms. Washing machine and dish washers are very good.
Only a couple of downsides, although there is a TV it is only for DVDs and the downstairs shower floor does not dry very well.
There is a great view on the valley from the pool.We did not see the owners for 2 weeks. There is also a bakery and a restaurant 10 mins walk away.
I would recommend for a stay away from it all, in a place with character with a pool.
Le Trait is situated near Ids-Saint-Roch, a peaceful village in the heart of the Berry, a picturesque and unspoiled region in the center of France.
The house is located near a very quiet road (very low traffic), surrounded by nature, offering stunning views on the Arnon Valley and complete privacy!
At Lignières, a small town at about 7km, you can find all accommodation : supermarket with petrol station, a few restaurants and bars, wine shop, tourist office, market place (on Monday), ...
Le Trait is a paradise if you are looking for a tranquil and rural location, ideal for hiking and cycling but also offering plenty of possibilities for excursions and places worth visiting.
The Berry is known for its ancient castles (Ainay-le-Vieil, Château de Meillant, Valençay,...) and lovely traditional villages such as Saint Benoît du Sault and Apremont sur Allier (two of the most beautiful villages in France).
Bourges and Châteauroux are lively cities where besides shopping, you can admire the cultural patrimony (cathedrals, museums), wander through the medieval town centers or enjoy a drink or a meal on one of the many terraces.
The nearby situated Noirlac Abbey is well preserved gem of cistercienzer architecture !
Small winding roads will lead you to old villages where time has stood still and along romantic landscapes, so typical for rural France.
In the Creuse valley you can admire the stunning view of the meandering River Creuse among hills and rocky outcrops, the Crozant Ruins and the charming artist village of Gargilesse.
Nearby in Lignières, kids will love the playful donkey museum at the Horse and Donkey Center where they can enjoy a ride on the back of a donkey or in a covered wagon.
Within a 30-40 km radius, you can visit 2 of stunning gardens : the medieval and romantic garden of Orsan and the lush and artistic Drulon garden.
The Berry is also the cradle of several famous19th century french authors such as George Sand and Alain Fournier. While visiting the beautiful 'Domain of Nohant' you'll still feel the presence of George Sand and in Epineuil le Fleuriel you can visit the school described by Alain Fournier in his masterpiece 'Le Grand Meaulnes'. Even if you've never read the book, you'll be able to picture the life of a 19th century schoolteacher and his family.
Last but not least the Berry is a paradise for those who enjoy good food and excellent wines at affordable prices. Most villages have a small local restaurant where you can have simple but tasteful meals for +/- 13 euros (first dish, main course, cheese and/or dessert). In the many gastronomical restaurants you can have delightful menus for around 30 to 40 euros.
The Berry is part of the Loire Valley wine region. The most famous is of course the fabulous Sancerre, but don't forget to discover the other lovely white or red wines in the region such as Reuilly, Quincy, Menetou Salon and Châteaumeillant !
More tourist information is to be found on following websites :
In the gîte there are plenty of tourist guides and brochures (also in English) at your disposal and an overview of our own tips and recommendations. And of course we are more than happy to share our passion about the region and help you to plan your vacation !
