About Janet

We have travelled all around the country over the years, but the best times have always been spent with family and friends at our places in Connecticut and Florida. Cherished memories have been made there and we are so happy to be able to share our homes with our guests so that they can do the same.

Janet purchased this cottage in 1996

Why Janet chose Eastern Connecticut

For as long as I can remember, my dream was to wake up, get a cup of coffee, and walk to the water's edge. We searched and searched for a quiet private lake near our home in Connecticut and came upon this one. It was perfect. Ashford Lake is clean and peaceful. We can see the sunrise every morning. I can't tell you the amount of wildlife I've seen - herons, ducks, geese, and a great surprise - 2 muskrats floating on their backs enjoying the early morning sun, right in front of the cottage! Over the years we have enjoyed 4th of July fireworks, had family picnics, caught a 12-inch bass, gazed in awe at the beautiful fall foliage, and watched an impromptu kids ice hockey game on the frozen lake in a snowstorm in January!

What makes this cottage unique

More than anything, we enjoy having this special lakefront cottage all to ourselves when we are there. It is secluded, but within less than an hour's drive of many things to do, and if you live in Connecticut, probably close enough to run back to your office if need be, while the rest of the family enjoys the outdoors! Swimming, fishing, star-gazing, games on the lawn, hiking on our dirt roads and nearby trails, visiting nearby UCONN, the antique shops of CT, the Woodstock and Brooklyn Fairs, listening to live music at The Vanilla Bean cafe... There is so much to do, but on the flip side, you can just relax.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We cam back to CT to be with our very ill mother. She was too ill to enjoy the

cabin with us, however, my sister and I enjoyed it very much. It is a great

cottage and was extremely clean. We were pleasantly surprised at how

wonderful it was here.

Thank you,

Cheryl and Sheila

Beautiful property, an hour away from everywhere!

  • 5 of 5

My roommates and I from college chose this place for our spring break getaway. We loved the location and got many gorgeous photos of the land. We also made day trips to Boston, Putnam, Providence, and New York City, as well as local vineyards and shops. Everything that one could ever want to explore is only a few miles away! You would never guess that judging by how peaceful it is here!

Positive experience

  • 5 of 5

As expected after reading description and reviews. Dated but clean. Appliances and kitchen supplies were sufficient for our needs. Beautiful view from living area. Lots of space for my 2 kids to play in living area and yard. Residential area but feels secluded. Overall, we enjoyed our week long stay.

Relaxing family time

  • 4 of 5

My children and I enjoyed ourselves. They are asking when we can go back again. They enjoyed the boats and the lake. We enjoyed the peace and quiet in the neighborhood. The home was well equipped with what we needed and then some. Thank you!

Disappointing. But we made the best of it.

  • 2 of 5

The property is situated beautifully on the lake. It's a nice, quiet, relaxing area. No noise, no one to bother you etc. however, the property itself was lacking cleanliness. I understand it's a lake house but that doesn't mean it should be in the state that it is. As per the owner and my own observations the property hasn't been cleaned Or updated in very long time. It seems like they're just renting it out and collecting $$. The owners should def put some of that money back into the property so that guests can have a comfortable stay. My stay was far from comfortable. Thankfully I brought everything. My own sheets, towels, blankets, pillows, cups, plates, utensils, etc. also it states that the kitchen is "fully stocked". Which is why pots and pans wasn't at the top of my list. There's one frying pan, and and a few random small sauté pans. That's not fully stocked. The 3 plates that I attempted to use had dried food on it.

my husband and I even showered with our flip flops on because the bathroom was so disgusting. There was no way our feet were touching that tub. I cringed everytime I had to use the shower. I walked around in sneakers the entire time and disinfected every area of the house before sitting, touching, etc.(including the sofas) I must have cleaned that house more in the 3 days I was there than the owners have in the past 3 years. The kitchen sink/faucet had thick layers of grime that I also ended up cleaning. It's nice that the owners are renting the property to others so that we too could enjoy the beautiful lake and the serenity of the surroundings. But again, if guests are paying to stay at your property you should make it comfortable. Atleast clean it. I work 7 days and I'm in school 6. I really just wanted to be able to get away and relax with my husband and my puppy. It sucks that I had to waste my money and time(the seldom days off I get) on this. But I guess you live and you learn right. I'm in no way trying to be disrespectful nor is this a "bad review". It's simply my honest feelings regarding my stay. My husband and I are newly weds. Two young adults living in NYC. It's disappointing that our money was just given away while we suffered. And I say "given away" because if the owners ever go to that property it's CLEAR as day what the state of it is. If so, then are intentionally deceiving others by your pictures and honest description. If we hadn't already drove 4 hours we would have turned right back and went home.

Owner's Response: First I would like to thank this guest for leaving our cottage in the same condition in which she found it - clean and neat. Her claims that she found it dirty are completely unfounded and puzzling to me. I personally clean the entire home after every group departs. That includes washing all the floors and cleaning and disinfecting the bathroom and kitchen areas. Despite her claims to the contrary, our cottage was clean and ready for guests when she arrived. Our cottage is stocked with bed linens, towels, pillows, blankets, dishes, pots & pans, kitchen utensils - pretty much everything our guests will need. This guest chose to bring some of her own things, but please note she did not need to. We did not receive any communications at all from her while they were in residence, so had no idea that she was "suffering" and unhappy during her stay. If she had called or emailed, we would have made every effort to address her concerns. She also did not fill out our exit questionnaire, which specifically asked for her suggestions for anything that could be improved. Before she arrived, she emailed and asked if there had been any recent updates or changes to the cottage. I answered factually that nothing recent had been done. This is definitely not the same as saying that it "hadn't been cleaned or updated in a very long time", which she claims I said and which is not the case. This review is not representative of the experience our many guests have had over the years. They and their pets have loved the place, with it's peaceful atmosphere, comfortable furnishings, and great swimming and fishing. Please check our other reviews, and don't hesitate to call me if you have any doubts.

Couldn't Be Better

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a week at the Cottage on Ashford lake and all I can say is WOW! My wife and I had the perfect week along with our Boxer, Minnie. We just recently lost our other Boxer Gemini and were concerned about how the vacation would go without her, but everything worked out well, even though she was missed by us all.

Minnie likes to walk in the water and with this lake being Crystal clear, we had no concerns about her drinking from the lake. I love to fish and caught fish every time I went out on the boat provided. Sometimes three or for times a day.

My wife likes to relax and this cottage is the perfect place for that. I won't continue to ramble on, I'm sure you get the idea. Can't wait to go back again. Thanks Janet and Bill for what I know consider my perfect vacation spot and at 62, I've seen a lot of them, but none better than this!
