We have lived in central Florida for most of our lives. As we have lived and traveled the state it had always been a dream to own a place on the beach. We have always been drawn to the water for rest and recreation so when it came time to choose a place it was my childhood memories of growing up in Cocoa Beach and southern California along with Stefanie's memorable family sojourns to Daytona and New Smyrna Beach which help shape our decision.
The Owner purchased this condo in 2005
We have two teenage kids and hoping to make both extended stays and short getaways we choose New Smyrna Beach for its closeness to Central Florida and quiet less tourist small town feel. Our condominium complex, Castle Reef, is on the no-drive section of New Smyrna Beach so the crowds are small and mostly neighbors and local folks, the way I remember the beach.
The beach here is absolutely marvelous and certainly the main draw, you can spend your entire vacation on the beach. The beach is wide and flat with plenty of room for lounging or the more active types looking for games, biking, kite flying. If you would like to take a break form the sun the town has many restuarants, some walking or biking distances, the rest a short drive away. There is a grocery store directly across the street to handle everything for your stay. What we love the most is to park the car and feel like everthing we need is close by, we don't have to get in the car until its time to leave.
When we do get out it still involves the water, New Smyrna Beach lies on an island separated from the mainland by a large saltwater mangrove lagoon and the Intracoastal waterway. If we not in the water we're on it. The boating options are diverse, we love to sail, kayak and power boat the local waters.
First of all the maintenance that was going on was relentless. The constant beeping of the lift and pressure washing was awful. We finally got some peace during the weekend. However, Monday rolled around and the drilling started right next door on the stucco and continued in our section everyday. Add the daily landscaping and lawn upkeep of the grounds, end result not relaxing at all. They were hard at as we were leaving this morning.
The kitchen is in need of a major cleaning! One drawer had utensils that looked they had never been cleaned and remnants of roach waste. The cabinets smell horrible and your can opener was a food safety hazard! Frying pans had layers of grease on them as well as badly scratched Teflon. Very outdated and dirty overall.
The balcony door doesn't lock (not very secure with workers on lifts everyday) or in general. I should be able to secure my doors at all times. Isn't that a code violation in a rental?
There is no outdoor hall lighting near the elevators on the ground floor. Another not very secure area to be in late at night.
I also found candy wrappers behind the dresser and a potato chip bag under the bed today while I was checking to be sure nothing was left behind.
The sofa is worn out and wires sticking out of the sofa bed, my niece nicked her finger on it helping me flip the sofa cushions.
