Overview

About the property

These two traditional stone cottages, on either end of an old barn, are set on the side of a wooded valley surrounded by fields and trees in the Perigord Vert. This range of buildings was originally owned by the chateau across the valley. Although in a tranquil rural location you are in easy reach of two attractive market towns and the beautiful old city of Perigueux. However you may just want to relax in the hammock near the swimming pool or walk in the woods nearby.

Each cottage is fully self-contained, with its own sunny patio and the cottages share the large garden, the swimming pool and a barn with table tennis, bikes and games.

The cottages are perfect for two families wanting to share a holiday yet have some time apart. We rent them together during the summer . The centrally heated Le Grenier is available for rent during the rest of the year.

The cottages have been our family holiday home for many years and we continue to spend our holidays there. We love the old beams and the rough plaster walls (with the occasional crack in them) and have tried to keep some of the atmosphere of the past. We think that it's a relaxing place partly because the cottages have not been brought completely up to date, though you will find that the cottages are well equipped and comfortable.

We want a stay in the cottages to be affordable and many families appreciate the fact that they can bring their own bed linen and towels as this keeps the cost down. The beds are equipped with pillows, duvets and bedcovers, and for the summer, blankets. We will provide linen and towels for an extra charge if you prefer.

The cottages are beside a narrow road that serves two other houses in the hamlet. The nearest house is about 150 metres away. The garden is edged to the east by a pine wood that stretches down to the bottom of the valley and by walnut trees to the north and south. The garden is not fenced so there are views through the trees in all directions. We are regularly visited by red squirrels and deer and a wide variety of birds. The butterflies on this hillside are particularly beautiful and are attracted by the lavender bushes in the garden.

The swimming pool which relies on the sun for its heating is a five by ten metre pool with a shallow and a deep end. Security is provided by an electrically operated pool cover which covers the pool and which meets the French security standards.

There are many walks from the house in the surrounding countryside and woodland. A map in each cottage will show you the way marked paths. It is possible for visitors to arrange to use the excellent tennis court in the local village for a small payment.

The best river swimming is in the Dronne, where you can also fish. You can also swim at Lac Jemaye, in the middle of the Foret de la Double: the plage has a sandy beach and a playground for children, and you can walk, cycle or ride in the surrounding forest. Canoes can be hired by the half day or day from canoe bases on the river Dronne and river Isle for an unhurried glide down the river. There is an excellent stable in the woods ten minutes’ drive away with horses for hire accompanied or unaccompanied.

The local outdoor swimming pool has a flume and a large paddling area for children, with smaller slides.

The two nearest small towns Riberac and Saint Astier, about 15 minutes’ drive, have good weekly markets and the usual supermarkets. They are also pleasant places to wander around. There are good restaurants in both these towns and there is also up to date information about our favourite village restaurants in the cottages.

This area is not as well-known as the area further south around Sarlat, and is therefore less crowded and more relaxed in the summer. There is, however, a lot to see and do: the tourist office arranges visits to local farms and producers. Many of the neighbouring villages have medieval churches. There are several chateaux that you can visit within 30 minutes’ drive of the cottages. The cafes in Riberac and Saint Astier have live music outdoors during the summer.

Perigueux is within easy reach with roman ruins, a renaissance town centre and outdoor jazz and a mime festival in the summer. Brantome is known as the Venice of the north, and is an attractive old town. There are many historic chateaux in the area that you can visit and the area has its own caves complete with Neolithic art (Les Grottes de Villars).

You can taste wines in the nearby Bergerac vineyards or in the pretty town of Saint Emilion which also has a museum of wine.

The Atlantic coast (Lacanau, Mimizan)) is reachable for a day trip to the beach and when you have had enough of the waves, you can retreat to the refreshing fresh water lagoons just inland. The highest dune in Europe, (Pilat) is also worth a visit.

The cottages are about an hour’s drive from Bergerac airport (Flybe, Ryanair, and Jet2) and also within reach of airports near Bordeaux, Limoges and La Rochelle. Another option is rail travel by TGV to Angouleme. There is care hire available next to the railway station.

super!

  • 4 of 5

Le Chai is a very spacious, and nicely decorated house, that fitted our family (2adults and 3 small children) wonderfully. The kitchen and all the other rooms are so well equipped that it feels like a friend's house you're staying in...

There were friendly neighbours, and one of our favourite British authors on the bookshelves. The surroundings are perfect for walking and running (the local farmers helpfull once lost). We loved 'le pain' from the Chanterac baker, we discovered the Monbazillac wine, picked great raspberries and saw a deer or two. We can recommend this gite strongly, but hope it will still be available the next time we plan to visit the area :-)

Beauté et tranquilité

  • 5 of 5

Nous avons passé une excellente semaine au calme, retirés de tout bruit. Le gîte est confortable et pratique, la piscine bien située, plus bas que la terrasse pas trop loin pas trop prêt.

Super séjour dans un cadre idyllique

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5
