Catherine is a freelance journalist and Alex is a TV director and photographer. They have two children, Toby, 10, and Olivia, 8. We moved to France in 2009 to enjoy a more relaxed pace of life, leisurely lunches, skiing in winter and of course, sun in summer. We have never looked back.
Catherine Cooper purchased this farmhouse in 2009
Because the view of the Pyrenees is just incredible - it has to be seen to be believed. Also we have the perfect balance of feeling very rural while also being close to shops, schools and other facilities.
Our view. It really is something special. Also both houses have been carefully renovated by Alex and local builders to keep many original features (stone walls, wooden beams, Captain's beds and antique French furniture) while also offering all modern comforts.
We absolutely loved our stay at Gite de Bertre. The area is truly magnificent. The view from the house is stunning. The house is fairly isolated but the supermarket is not too far by car so you can stock up. The peace and calm was just what we wanted. We stayed two weeks with our three young kids and the other gite was occupied during that time by two different families but the space between the two gites (despite them being part of the same building) is large enough not to feel "on top of each other". The garden is big enough for everyone to enjoy themselves. And the swimming pool was pure delight as the weather was glorious. The house remained cool enough despite the hot weather. There are lots of places to visit in the Ariege region and the kids enjoyed visiting the area as much as we did. But you do have to get used to driving on bendy roads and for journeys to take sometimes longer than expected. But the views are stunning even when you are driving around ;-) The house is very spacious and you have everything you need, even toys and books for the kids. Ideal for a family and for people looking for piece and quiet. We hope to come back one day!!
A newly-renovated, family-friendly gite in quiet, rural location between Carcassonne and Toulouse with amazing panoramic views of the Pyrenees.
