Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 1-4 people per booking

The Cottage is a completely renovated 19th century post and beam structure boasting a wonderful open floor plan with wood and stone tile floors throughout. The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen for guests, a bathroom with shower, and a spacious sitting area with WIFI and a large flat screen smart TV. The large loft bedroom features a queen size bed. Additional guests from the same booking party can be accommodated on a very comfortable queen sleeper sofa in the main living area. In all there are over 1,000 square feet of pure privacy.

Guests will be treated to spectacular western views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, particularly at sunset. Open a window and fall asleep to the sounds of cattle grazing or the call of spring peepers. Enjoy the unfiltered night sky filled with stars and lightning bugs. Take in the wetland that runs through our property providing additional treats from Mother Nature including bald eagles, great herons, hawks, Canadian geese, and red foxes (after all, this is Virginia hunt country). Sit at the fire pit patio (an old silo slab) and enjoy an outdoor meal or glass of wine.

Daily continental breakfast of organic fresh fruit, yogurt, and pastry. Organic orange juice, milk, half and half, cereal, coffee and tea are stocked in the kitchen. Guests are welcome to bring additional items to cook.

Dunthorpe Farm is more that just a cottage B & B. It is the restored 1790's farm of Kelly and Philip Foltman, and includes Dr. Foltman's veterinary practice and several personal horses. They also share their home with two cats and two dogs which guests are asked to enjoy en lieu of bringing their own pets.

Most Charming 5 Star of Northern Virginia

  • 5 of 5

If you knew me, I am not the person who has the time in my work day to send reviews. This stay from Kelly and Phil deserves It! Every detail from wine accessories to a stocked Kuerig is thought of. You will feel at home with a clean and comfortable bed with super pillows. Breakfast was delivered around 7:30 am with fresh fruit and scones. Two delightful dogs and two friendly cats would come visit from time to time (only outside). The farms location will give you every bit of atmosphere with scenic views to horses and cows grazing. There is a large fire pit stocked with wood and a gorgeous view. The farm is in the heart of Loudoun County wine clusters (41 wineries). I can go on and on, but trust me when I say this... this is a hidden Gem! My wife and I will be back and are telling many friends about our awesome stay. Thank you Kelly and Thank you Phil... it was a pleasure meeting both of you!

Beautiful property, charming and delightful cottage

We loved our time at the Cottage and look forward to returning. The surrounding area leaves much to discover. Kelly and Phil are wonderful. You can see the thoughtfulness and care they put into their home away from home. Excellent extras and breakfast in the am was delicious.

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

Everything was lovely! The space was perfect for us - the setting beautiful, quiet, serene. Kelly is sweet and had great recommendations for dinners. We enjoyed the dogs and using the firepit. Breakfast was delicious and fresh milk and orange juice and more was provided. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and hope to be back again some day!

We stayed for the weekend for a friends wedding and wish we could have stayed a few more days. We absolutely loved it! If we ever make it back out to Virginia we will definitely come back.

Relaxing location near many options for different activities

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay for a few nights in a quiet location. The breakfast options at the property were great, and the owners have very thoughtfully stocked the barn with toiletries, teas, coffee, juice, yogurt, etc. There are wineries, hiking, historical sites, and great restaurants nearby. This would also be a great spot to read, write, and/or relax for a few days with a great view.

An incredibly beautiful, unique property in a quiet and peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

The restoration of the barn is a great example of how to keep the best of the old while adding the new. Phil and Kelly were great hosts. I am very sensitive to light when I am trying to go to sleep and asked about two small, uncurtained windows in the loft bedroom. I finally decided to take an eye mask and promptly forgot about this issue. When we arrived, Phil showed us through the cottage. When we got to the bedroom, he said that he knew I was sensitive to light. Imagine how surprised and grateful I was when he showed me the two pieces of cardboard he had cut, which covered the windows precisely. Wonderful. We were asked daily if we needed anything and, if we did, it was promptly provided. Be aware, however, that if anyone in your party has mobility issues, they might have some difficulty climbing the stairs to the bedroom. They would be successfully able to use the sleep sofa on the main floor, so that would work. Also, as is usual in restored properties, allowances must be made as to the proximity of the bathroom to the master bedroom. We had to go down 16 stairs and then back up in order to reach the bathroom at night. It was worth it: just FYI. Each morning there was a continental breakfast brought to us, with fruit and a pastry of some kind; beautifully presented and yummy to eat. All in all, a wonderful, unique experience.
