Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 1-4 people per booking

The Cottage is a completely renovated 19th century post and beam structure boasting a wonderful open floor plan with wood and stone tile floors throughout. The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen for guests, a bathroom with shower, and a spacious sitting area with WIFI and a large flat screen smart TV. The large loft bedroom features a queen size bed. Additional guests from the same booking party can be accommodated on a very comfortable queen sleeper sofa in the main living area. In all there are over 1,000 square feet of pure privacy.

Guests will be treated to spectacular western views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, particularly at sunset. Open a window and fall asleep to the sounds of cattle grazing or the call of spring peepers. Enjoy the unfiltered night sky filled with stars and lightning bugs. Take in the wetland that runs through our property providing additional treats from Mother Nature including bald eagles, great herons, hawks, Canadian geese, and red foxes (after all, this is Virginia hunt country). Sit at the fire pit patio (an old silo slab) and enjoy an outdoor meal or glass of wine.

Daily continental breakfast of organic fresh fruit, yogurt, and pastry. Organic orange juice, milk, half and half, cereal, coffee and tea are stocked in the kitchen. Guests are welcome to bring additional items to cook.

Dunthorpe Farm is more that just a cottage B & B. It is the restored 1790's farm of Kelly and Philip Foltman, and includes Dr. Foltman's veterinary practice and several personal horses. They also share their home with two cats and two dogs which guests are asked to enjoy en lieu of bringing their own pets.

Most Charming 5 Star of Northern Virginia

  • 5 of 5

If you knew me, I am not the person who has the time in my work day to send reviews. This stay from Kelly and Phil deserves It! Every detail from wine accessories to a stocked Kuerig is thought of. You will feel at home with a clean and comfortable bed with super pillows. Breakfast was delivered around 7:30 am with fresh fruit and scones. Two delightful dogs and two friendly cats would come visit from time to time (only outside). The farms location will give you every bit of atmosphere with scenic views to horses and cows grazing. There is a large fire pit stocked with wood and a gorgeous view. The farm is in the heart of Loudoun County wine clusters (41 wineries). I can go on and on, but trust me when I say this... this is a hidden Gem! My wife and I will be back and are telling many friends about our awesome stay. Thank you Kelly and Thank you Phil... it was a pleasure meeting both of you!

Tranquil weekend escape in wine/bike country

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay at the cottage. It was the perfect home base for our adventures in Harpers Ferry, virginia wine/brewery country, and road biking on the side roads and W&OD trail. t's a renovated carriage barn that retains the history and charm but with all the modern conveniences if you want them. The hosts were fantastic, and their working horse farm is super convenient to Hillsborough and Purceville and surrounding areas, but peaceful and surrounded by open fields. We loved the open feel, with the loft bedroom. All the creature comforts and amenities you could want are provided. Breakfast included homemade strawberry preserves - delicious! Looking forward to our next visit!

Great Property, great owners very relaxing stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary and wanted a place where we could relax and be away from the crowd, but be close enough to good food to not waste our time driving. This place was it. It was wonderfully quiet (even with some baby birds). The weather wasn't as cooperative as we might have liked, but we were able to walk and enjoy the property between the storms. It is a beautiful place rain or shine.

The couple that own the property are fantastic and make some of the best croissants I've ever had. The breakfast was really good both mornings and delivered without us even knowing they were there. They were friendly and interactive, but didn't intrude on us in any way. Their obvious love of the property and knowledge of its history is part of what makes this place great. They run a vet clinic out of the actual barn and have four horses. A couple of them were friendly and came up to the gate. As it turned out, they were more looking for a treat, but either way we got to say hello to them.

The kitchen is well appointed, but don't expect to cook for ten. The stove is small, but it is gas (a plus). There are the utensils and pots & pans that you would expect in a rental. The dishes and glasses are nice and there are enough of them. If you expect to cook, the vent hood is not externally exhausted. Anything stove-top at high temperature and you will set off the smoke alarm. Who wants to cook though, with all restaurants in the area which include a wood fired oven pizza place. There is a Keurig, a coffee grinder , and a french press to make it in. There is also a selection of tea. You have access to a full sized and a bar refrigerator and washer dryer set. One note, if you have mobility issues with stairs, you sleep in a loft and the only bathroom is on the ground floor.

We found the bed to be extremely comfortable. Both couches are also nice and the view of the yard through the huge windows (where the barn doors were) is beautiful and entertaining with birds and other small wildlife running about. The video streaming with the Smart TV worked well, but remember to sign out of your Netflix account (the previous renter didn't so I now know their watching habits).

Everything was absolutely fantastic, even if the rain did prevent using the fire pit. We will definitely be returning to this place sometime in the future, and highly recommend it to anyone trying to get away, but also be a mere 20 minutes from civilization.

Don't miss the Cottage at Dunthorpe!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I had the opportunity to stay at the cottage in April 2017. It surpassed all expectations! It is a sophisticated cabin in a rural setting. Travel Virginia's tree lined streets and rest in an extremely comfortable well appointed cabin. Kelly and Phil are welcoming hosts and help you feel right at home at home. A delicious breakfast was waiting for us every morning and I look forward to our next visit.

Picturesque and Peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

Kelly & Phil are wonderful hosts! The cottage is even more beautiful in person. The petit dejeuner breakfast of croissants, yogurt, fresh berries, and coffee was just enough to keep you going till lunch at the delightful Hunter's Head Tavern that Kelly directed us to. After a gadabout the county during the day, the cottage was a welcome comfort. Wish we'd had more days to have enjoyed the outdoor fire pit! Thank you Kelly and Phil for making us feel so welcome.
