THE BUILDINGThe historic building housing the apartment is in the center of the Tuscan city of Pienza (in the province of Siena). It was built during the Renaissance by order of Cardinal Atrebatense, a member of the papal court of Pius II. It has a total surface area of about 450-500 m2 square meters; it is located on Corso Rossellino, the city’s main street, directly opposite the Piccolomini Papal Palace, and 50 meters from Piazza Pio II.The building has been completely restructured and, in addition to the main structure, also includes a top floor apartment that the National Trust of Siena officially recognized as 'historic', as attested by the accompanying ministerial statement. It also includes large cellars, attics, garage and a small courtyard.Today’s building is the result of the total renovation of a unique hotel-restaurant (Hotel Letizia), which closed its doors in 1968 after being operational since the mid-1800s, and which, at the time of its closing, was Pienza’s only accommodation facility. It still retains the unique flair conferred upon it by the celebrities who passed through over the years.Pienza enjoys today a worldwide reputation thanks to its architectural and natural beauty, history, food, and, last but not least, film and TV. Films like The English Patient, The Devil in Love, Pleasant Nights, Medici: Masters of Florence, The Gladiator, as well as countless commercials have indeed given huge visibility to this 'Ideal City'.

AREAPienza, a lovely gem in the south of Tuscany, is the most artistically renowned center of Val d'Orcia. It enjoys a strategic position, since it overlooks the entire valley with breathtaking view.Much of Pienza’s historical and artistic heritage is concentrated in the picturesque square dedicated to Pope Pius II, who changed the fate of the town in his quest to turn it into the Renaissance’s 'ideal city', a project entrusted to Architect Bernardo Rossellino. The castle of Monticchiello, a well-preserved specimen of medieval architecture that has survived modernity, once a stronghold of the Republic of Siena, is located nearby. In recognition for its Renaissance beauty, Pienza was added in 1996 to the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list, followed in 2004 by its surrounding Val d'Orcia.Pienza was also awarded the Silver Medal for Valor in honor of the sacrifices of its residents and its commitment to the Partisan struggle during WWII.

Some points of interest in the area:- PIAZZA PIO II: a square dedicated to one of the most important local Renaissance figures, Enea Silvio Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II.- CATHEDRAL: Pope Pius II was fascinated by the Gothic lines of the Franciscan churches of Assisi, as well as the 'rich but sober' lines of the churches of San Sebastiano in Mantua and Santa Maria Novella in Florence. These structures served as the blueprint Architect Rossellino was provided by the Pope to design the new Cathedral. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin was consecrated by Pope Pius II on August 29, 1462.- PICCOLOMINI PALACE: located next to the Cathedral. Designed in the late fifteenth century by Bernardo Rossellini, this palace is one of the earliest specimens of Renaissance architecture. The building houses a rectangular courtyard featuring a portico supported by stone columns. The small terrace area overlooks the entire Val d'Orcia, while maintaining the characteristics of the Renaissance garden. A large octagonal well and an ornate fountain are the main late fifteenth-century elements enhancing the sculpture garden. - TOWN HALL (PALAZZO COMUNALE): The Town Hall of Pienza is the former residence of the Priors and located on Piazza Pio II, in front of the Duomo. The Palace, perhaps designed by Bernardo Rossellini, was remodeled in 1900.- BISHOP’S PALACE (PALAZZO VESCOVILE): The Bishop’s Palace of Pienza is located in front of Palazzo Piccolomini. The old Gothic palace was donated by Pope Pius II to Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia (the future Pope Alexander VI), who was his closest collaborator; he renovated it during the fifteenth century to make it his residence.
