An Ideal Portland Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We literally just returned from our stay at Rich and Patsy's guest home in Sellwood (Portland, Oregon) and it was perfect. Clean...actually spotless...well-designed, thoughtfully-furnished, luscoius linens, cozy, but just big enough for the four of us, this home away from home fit the bill as we took our grand-daughter and her mom to celebrate her 21st birthday. The Sellwood neighborhood has all you need and I could really just stay there...quaint shops, good restaurants and food carts, great grocery, wonderful homes to stroll around and admire...but also access to the Trimet system for a bus or the Max. Portland has some terrific neighborhoods to explore, a beautiful waterfront and is a great place to spend some time. You won't be sorry with this as your home base! Thanks again, Rich and Patsy!

A lovely property

  • 5 of 5

My husband, I and my adult son stayed here one weekend. It was a good choice for us because it had two bathrooms and two bedrooms so we wouldn't get in the way of each other. Most of the properties I looked at had only one bathroom that were in this price range. It was nice not to have to get two hotel rooms or try to cram three adults in one room. There was a cute shopping area two blocks away. Grand Central Bakery (I highly recommend the maple danish!), a tea shop and a coffee shop as well as several restaurants and antique shops were right there to visit. There were also several food carts on this street. I liked the area because it is a little more low key than some other areas of Portland. I can't comment on the ease of public transportation, because we drove to everywhere outside the Sellwood area.

Parking on the street was easy and we always found a spot. Rich greeted us when we got there and was available to answer questions but was not at all intrusive, so if you are someone who likes your privacy, you will have it. We didn't really cook, but appreciated having a refrigerator, coffee pot and dishes.

I would stay here again and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys being in a neighborhood as opposed to a busy commercial area.

A+++ Excellent!!!

  • 5 of 5

Well kept, modern, cozy and comfortable. Would stay there my next ten visits to Portland, all things needed are within walking distances. Centrally located for day treks, whether inner city to outings such as hiking, or exploring Oregon’s country side. Cannot say enough good things about the place, the owners are accommodating and nice also. Real gem!

Lovely and Very Convenient

  • 4 of 5

The guest cottage has a lot of positives: it's very, very convenient to the neighborhood center of Sellwood (one of our favorite spots in Portland), it's super quiet and clean, and well-stocked for basic cooking. The only negative is that it's a bit difficult to handle the ductless heating system... the sitting area tends to be a bit cool and the upstairs bedroom gets a little warm. Not a big deal, but it is the reason for four stars rather than five. Thanks to the owners for providing an electric radiator for downstairs. A suggestion would be to consider adding a thermostatically-controlled ceiling fan to push the heat down from the vaulted ceiling in the heating months.

Owner's Response: The ceiling fan for the peak of our double height vaulted ceiling is already on order. We are aware that this will even out the heat between the first and second floors. We had our electrician out a month ago. Once the ceiling fan arrives we just need to find a vacant two day window for installation. Thanks for staying with us.

Ideal home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay in rainy Portland. Our family of 4 was very comfortable at Rich & Patsy's guest house. They have thought of everything! The place is immaculately maintained. It's very open and has lots of light. The location couldn't be better--we enjoyed walking to get sweet goodies at Grand Central bakery. The New Seasons market was very convenient to pickup a few snacks for our stay upon arriving. We were easily able to visit friends and family in many areas surrounding Portland. We will be back!

The Neighborhood

Sellwood is one of Portland’s oldest and most walkable neighborhoods, popular for its close proximity to downtown. It overlooks the Willamette River and has some of the most beautiful parks in Portland.

Sellwood Park is just 3 blocks, New Seasons organic grocery store is also nearby along with numerous coffee shops, wine bars, pubs, bakeries, food carts, yoga, palates, antiques stores and restaurants in the surrounding area. There is a bike path just a few blocks away- the Springwater Corridor trail - that goes straight to downtown in just 3 miles ride - or it will take you 15 minutes to drive to downtown. Our neighborhood has the soft, green comfort & safety of a charming small town, but with the style, excitement and access of city life.
