About the property

Molieres, Dordogne - Close to Lalinde, Bergerac and Sarlat, in the heart of the Perigord Noir

Les Vitarelles, a farmhouse with outbuildings that have been converted into the owners’ home and three gites, is set in 47 acres of private land comprising mature oak woods, orchards and an ancient vineyard, plus lawned areas. In the heart of the Dordogne, Les Vitarelles is close to the market town of Lalinde and the picturesque villages of Cadouin and Molieres, and is accessed by a private no-through lane.

Private, secluded, rural and peaceful, Les Vitarelles is perfect for a quiet country break. This former farm is also wonderful for children, who love our two rescue donkeys, goats, chickens, cats and dog. Also spot wild deer, boars, rabbits and birds of prey. With a wealth of mature fruit trees, pick your own figs, cherries, plums, apples, pears and walnuts, when in season. There is a large, shared pool set in a large lawned area.

On arrival you’ll receive a welcome pack of tea, coffee, sugar, milk, butter, fresh bread, eggs from our chickens and a bottle of local wine. Each gite is equipped with a barbecue, along with charcoal, fire lighters and utensils. The Barn, The Farmhouse and The Cottage all have wood burning stoves, and during the colder months we provide a stock of fire wood and firelighters. The bedrooms are also equipped with electric heaters during Autumn and Winter. The kitchen is stocked with washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets, washing powder (where appropriate), tea towels and cleaning products.

There is Wi-Fi throughout, and cots, highchairs and baby baths can also be supplied on request.

We provide an ironing service and an evening baby sitting service, and with advance notice can also supply packed lunches and evening meals.

Les Vitarelles is available to hire in its entirety - the three gites, The Barn, The Farmhouse and The Cottage, together sleep 26, making it ideal for large parties, weddings and other celebrations.

Les Vitarelles is just 4km from Molieres, a picturesque bastide town with bar, tabac and epicerie. Cadouin is 6km away and has a number of restaurants and bars, a boulangerie, and a beautiful abbey. Lalinde is a market town 10km from Les Vitarelles, with all amenities including tourist information, pharmacy, supermarket, and weekly Thursday morning market. Les Vitarelles is just over 30km from Bergerac airport, and 150km from the airport at Bordeaux.

Named after the great river running through it, the Dordogne is an increasingly popular holiday destination. With pleasant, warm weather in Spring and Autumn, July and August tend to be the hottest months, with typical temperatures of 25-30 degrees.

The region is typified by mellow, yellow stone bastide villages and towns, including Beynac-et-Cazenac, Monpazier, Domme and La Roque Gageac, and boasts over 1,500 castles, making it ‘The Other Chateau Country’, with particularly wonderful examples at Beynac, Milandes and Monbazillac.

The Dordogne is a gourmet’s dream, with foie gras, confit de canard, the highly prized black Perigord truffles, fresh ceps and walnut oil available in local restaurants and at the markets. Throughout the summer many towns and villages hold weekly evening markets – grab a table, and choose your evening meal from one of the many stalls; merguez sausages, choucroute garnie, boudin noir… Many have live music, too.

Walking, cycling, canoeing, kayaking, horseriding, golfing and fishing are popular activities in the Dordogne, and all are available within a short drive from Les Vitarelles.

About Emma Smith

We took a leap of faith, sold everything, and moved to the Dordogne in 2015 with our young son, and we haven't looked back since!

Emma Smith purchased this farmhouse in 2015

Why Emma Smith chose Perigord Noir

We fell in love with this former tobacco and dairy farm immediately, and spent the best part of our first year here converting and refurbishing the properties, and getting ready to welcome our first guests. We loved the (literally!) acres of space, we're 2km from our local small town, Molieres, and we have just a few neighbours, plus a duck farm adjacent to us. Quite often, the only sound you can hear is birdsong, and at night the sky is so dark - perfect for stargazing during the summer. We're close enough to Molieres to feel like a real part of a local community, and we're lucky enough to have been welcomed with open arms.

We have access to wonderful, cheap wine (the local Pecharment and Monbazillac in particular are delicious) and you could visit a local market on any day during the week in summer, and buy local chickens and ducks, fantastic cheeses, and beautifully fresh fruit and vegetables.

We've found a much slower pace of life here, which we're really enjoying and would recommend very much!

What makes this farmhouse unique

The space at Les Vitarelles is wonderful. We have acres of woods, with oaks, hazels and hornbeams, where we often spot wild deer. During summer the fields are full of wild flowers and bales of hay and, of course, we have space for all our animals, which currently number two rescue donkeys, two goats, chickens, cats and our Labrador dog. Our pool is large, and set back in an acre of garden, with an old well, walnut, cherry, pear and apple trees, and fantastic views across the fields and woods.

The gites themselves are made from the local creamy yellow Perigordine stone, with many original features including oak beams and fireplaces. We set up a new gite business when we moved here, and I love that we've been able to really add our own stamp to the properties. Come and see what you think!

Beautiful, peaceful, welcoming

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in the Farmhouse at La Vitarelles. Two families with 4 children between us (13 - 7 age range) amply accommodated in the spacious and comfortable, well equipped farmhouse. Loads of space to set the kids free and know where they were. Gorgeous setting and wonderful pool. Lots to see and do locally if you want to (Chateaux, markets, canoeing the Dordogne, cycling) but a great place to stay and relax if you need to recharge. Emma and Don couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful, Emma is a wonderful cook and her chocolate brownies that greeted our arrival, legendary. We will remember the views, swallows and billions of stars in the truly dark skies for a long time to come. Planning my next trip......

Beautiful, peaceful, well equipped property in stunning surroundings, perfect holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a fantastic two weeks staying in the farmhouse at Les Vitarelles. If you are looking for peace and quiet, well equipped accommodation, rolling hills and views this is perfect. The accommodation consists of 3 beautiful, sympathetically restored buildings. We stayed in the farmhouse, which is stunning and the site exceeded our expectations. We were two families with four children between us ranging in age between 5 and 8. The kids loved running around in the fields, playing on the hay bales, feeding and grooming the donkeys and jumping in the pool. It's really picture perfect, zero road noise and if you are keen on stargazing at night there is no light pollution - we spent quite a lot of time watching shooting stars whilst lying on the grass after a couple of relaxing glasses of wine!

Les Vitarelles has some gorgeous villages and towns within easy 10-20 minutes drive - you do need a car while you're there. There are loads of food markets on at night in the towns around and some lovely restaurants - the owners, Don and Emma, gave us some good recommendations. We had some great days out - canoeing on the Dordogne, hiring bikes, building 'dams' in the river, local markets, caves full of stalactites and stalagmites, chateaus and much more. All together a really memorable and fantastic holiday, and we would definitely stay here again - we didn't want to come home!!
