Nestled in the heart of the Dordogne valley, this 17th century former tobacco and dairy farm includes three restored gîtes and the owners’ home. Les Vitarelles sleeps up to 30 guests, and, with exceptional views and a rural setting, is the perfect spot for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. Ideal for families, large groups (including weddings and other celebrations), walkers, cyclists, bird watchers, foodies and nature lovers.
Stay in the traditional Perigordine Farmhouse, with exposed oak beams and original fireplaces, or The Barn, with tons of light and space and two roof terraces. The Cattle Shed has a huge living space and two ensuite bathrooms, one with a roll-top bath.
Start your day at Les Vitarelles with fresh croissants and bread from the local boulangerie, home-made plum jam from our own trees and free-range eggs from the chickens. Take a dip in one of our two large, secure pools or ramble through our wild flower meadows and ancient oak woods (see if you can spot the rusting vintage Citroen!) – we have over 45 acres to explore. Pick fresh figs, walnuts, apples, pears, plums and cherries from the orchard and meet the animals, including Eeyore our rescue donkey, Demelza and Matilda the friendly goats, our Labrador, Sam, and our chickens, ducks, cats and kittens. If you’re lucky you may spot deer, wild boar, migrating cranes and birds of prey. Fire up the barbecue on your private terrace with local meat from the boucherie and fresh vegetables from our potager (charcoal provided) and in the evenings sit out under the stars or on colder nights light the woodburning stove, with free logs from our woods.
Named after the great river running through it, the Dordogne is an increasingly popular holiday destination. With pleasant, warm weather in Spring and Autumn, July and August tend to be the hottest months, with typical temperatures of 25-30 degrees.
Visit one of the many daily markets and sample local honey, walnut oil, cheeses, pates and foie gras. Spring asparagus, beautiful summer strawberries, ceps and highly prized black Perigord truffles during Autumn and oysters at Christmas time are a must. Take a vineyard tour and try the Bergerac wines (many of which are organic) including Monbazillac and Percharment, try your hand at mushroom hunting (you may find ceps in our woods!), hire a bike for the day and take one of the many cycle routes in the area, or try horse riding, canoeing, golfing or fishing.
The Dordogne is renowned for its summer night markets, held in towns and villages every night of the week. Choose from one of the many marchands selling regional dishes including duck confit, buckwheat pancakes, moules and more, take a seat at one of the communal tables and enjoy dinner whilst listening to live music under the stars. There’s lots happening in the cooler months too; take your pick from the beautiful flower markets in spring, winter truffle and ‘au gras’ markets, where farmers sell ducks, geese and foie gras and a plethora of Christmas markets, most notably the ones at Sarlat and Perigueux.
Visit Molieres (4km), our local English Bastide town founded in 1284 with a 13th Century fortified Plantagenet gothic church, and Cadouin (6km) with its UNESCO World Heritage Site abbey. Further afield there’s a wealth of Bastide towns and chateaux to explore, including the towns of Sarlat, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Domme, Rocamadour and La RoqueGageac. Tourist highlights including the famous Lascaux and Rouffignac caves, the Chateau de Castelnaud, the overhanging gardens of Marqueyssac and the Le Bournat, La Foret des Ecureuils, Rocamadour Aventure and Bergerac Aqua parks are all within easy reach.
Each gite is equipped with a barbecue, along with charcoal, fire lighters and utensils. The Barn, The Farmhouse and The Cattle Shed all have wood burning stoves, and during the colder months we provide a stock of fire wood and firelighters. The bedrooms are also equipped with electric heaters during Autumn and Winter. All bedding and bath and hand towels are provided, and the kitchens are stocked with washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets, tea towels and cleaning products. The pools are enclosed and kept locked at all times, and each pool has a security alarm.
There is Wi-Fi throughout, and cots, highchairs and baby baths can also be supplied on request.
