About the property

Cottage in Grizebeck, near Broughton in Furness - in a small village surrounded by fells. Short breaks available.

Spring Gardens is a cosy 18th Century farm workers cottage on the edge of the Lake District National Park. It has been recently refurbished to a high standard and has private off road parking.

The cottage sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms and is ideal for a couple or a family. Children are very welcome and nursery equipment and toys can be provided at no extra charge.

It is conveniently situated in the village of Grizebeck on the picturesque Duddon estuary, an ideal location for enjoying the many activities the lake district has to offer. There is a great pub serving good food in the village.

The cottage retains many original features such as exposed beams, original pitch pine doors with Suffolk latches and wooden floorboards. Furnished with comfy beds with Egyptian cotton bedding for a good nights sleep. Comfy sofas with cushions and snugly blankets, rugs and a log burning stove with a good supply of logs make this a perfect cottage at any time of year.

The beck runs at the bottom of the sunny garden where you will find a picnic table, flowers and a herb garden. The cottage is surrounded by fells with many footpaths and open access areas, with the Lakeland mountains as a backdrop the views are just stunning, this is an ideal walkers retreat.

For your comfort, Spring Gardens is a smoke and pet free cottage.

The location has poor mobile phone and wifi signal, for this reason we do not have wifi in the cottage.

We bought the cottage in August 2014 and have fully renovated and refurbished it to create this lovely holiday home. We live only a few miles away but still love to stay at the cottage ourselves, we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Why Heather Rhodes chose Kirkby Ireleth

This is the real Cumbria, becks and rivers winding down to the estuary and out to the open sea, Fells with open access and views of the stunning mountains behind.

On the edge of the national park, it is away from the busy tourist hot spots of the Lake District, yet just a short drive from them. This makes it an ideal base to explore the Cumbrian coastline and the south lakes. The west coast of Cumbria has been described as the ‘un spoiled’ area of the lake district and there are many walks with beautiful views right from the cottage. This area has been a favourite of ours for many years.

There are several road cycle and off road cycle routes in the area. There is always something to do no matter what the weather, day Spa packages available at locations only 15 mins drive from the cottage, ask the owner for details.

What makes this cottage unique

We are more than happy to welcome children at Spring Gardens, nursery items are available free of charge. There are books, games and toys, just let me know if you have any specific requirements.

I can be flexible with bookings, I am always happy to discuss any individual requirements such as check-in dates and minimum night stays. I am happy to add additional touches for special occasions such as flowers for an anniversary etc. Please contact me (the owner) to discuss.

Grize beck (beck = a small river) runs at the bottom of the garden. Safety railing has been installed. Please do not wear outside shoes in the cottage, we recommend that you bring slippers with you. The cottage will be cleaned and beds made up prior to your arrival. The bathroom will have a supply of clean towels. Please note that mobile phone signal is poor in the area. We do not have wifi.

Very well renovated cottage in convenient location

We booked this cottage very last minute for a weekend in March 2018. The owner dealt with our enquiry and booking very efficiently and was very responsive to emails. It was very easy to find, and convenient for exploring the southern and western Lake District as well as the Cumbrian coast. The cottage was nicely renovated, very clean, and had everything we needed. The central heating runs from the wood burning stove, which we thought might be tricky but the stove draws so well it was very quickly up to temperature and the house warm. It was a cold weekend so the bedrooms became cool at night but that was great for me - others might need to stoke the fire up before going to bed. Off-street parking was a bonus, and the small garden would be nice in summer. We wondered if there might be some traffic noise but we didn't notice anything - I don't think the road carried much traffic, despite being an A road. Overall, a great little cottage in a convenient area - this isn't peak Lake District in terms of quaintness but I like the character and realness of this area, and there are many quiet and less explored gems to be found. If you want the busy tourist hotspots, Coniston, Tarn Hows and Windermere/Grasmere are easily reached from here.

Fantastic, should have booked for longer! Cosy, just idyllic. Only missed out on five stars as no WiFi. Everything else was perfect. My daughter and I and grandson enjoyed our stay thoroughly x

Amazing cottage

The cottage was exactly as the pictures show it was beautiful and extremely well looked after and cleanliness was 100%. The owners were very quick to reply to any correspondence and really lovely to deal with, nothing was too much trouble. Bottle of wine and plenty tea coffee etc incase you forget to take any. Me and my sister did not want to leave. There’s no internet or phone signal at the cottage but we knew that before we went and it’s actually not a minus but a plus as far as I’m concerned and if your out in the car or walks you get signal in loads of places. Thank you to The owner Heather she was lovely 😀

Beautiful cosy cottage

First impressions were wow! Clean, cosy and decorated beautiful. Beautiful cottage with a modern touch. Owners were very helpful Nd provided us with a high chair, stair gate and travel cot etc. Close to lots of activities and stuff to do! Def recommend!

We recommend the use of a car to get the most from your holiday.

A bus service runs from the village and connects to nearby villages and towns.

Grizebeck is a small village, the petrol station has a post office, taxi service and shop, it sells basic provisions including logs and sticks for the fire.

The Greyhound Inn in the village serves a selection of real ales, wines and good food.

More shops, cafes and restaurants can be found in the neighbouring village of Broughton-in-Furness, 3 miles away.

The nearest supermarket is Booths in Ulverston 7 miles away

There is a good fish and chip shop in Greenodd 5 miles

Cumbria coastal way passes by the village.

The Cumbia way passes within 2 miles of the cottage.

There are many footpaths on the surrounding fells with stunning views of the mountains and coastline.

The Cumbrian mountains are a short drive away, a selection of Wainwright books are in the cottage.

If you are new to mountain walking and would like guidance, we can source a qualified mountain leader to guide you or you and your family safely on the mountains (daily fee payable to the guide)

This is an ideal area for both road cycling and off road cycling.

The west coast of Cumbria has some of the country’s best motor biking roads. We can point you in the right direction or come and explore for yourself.

River and lake sports including fishing, canoeing and sailing are nearby, Coniston water and Windermere are the closest lakes.

The tourist attractions of the south Lakes are all within a short driving distance (most within a 15 minute drive) the list is too long to mention, a selection of leaflets is in the cottage.
