The house has had notable owners and visitors over the past 170 years. Queen Victoria is rumoured to have stayed there and in 1879 Cornelius Nicholson whom was a “self made man”, owned the property. Cornelius was the managing director of the East Indian Railway and was friends with Charles Dickens, Wordsworth and Count Strogonoff. His daughter wrote a book called “A life well-spent”, beautifully written the book which recites attention-grabbing anecdotes of Cornelius’s life. We are offering the ground floor of this period home.

Really great location
The property was extremly spacious and had everything we needed.
The location was perfect, only 15 min walk to the beavh and town. Ventnor was definitly the best location on the island. Fantastic beavh and steep hill cove was definitly worth the walk.
The only reason not getting 5 stars is because the apartment was a tiny bit damp - due to it being at the bottom of a big house. The bathroom not having a vent made it worse. Tje bathroom also neds some TLC. Neither of things would be enough to stop us visiting again.
Thank you for your feedback. We are having the family bathroom renovated this week which will add ventilation and the much needed TLC!
We have also noticed that the well situated in the main en suite bedroom blows a damp draft into the apartment. So we have having this capped off and sealed. It will also make this room a little larger.
The property in not used over the winter, so it takes time to warm through. However, we will ensure going forward at the start of the next season that we start the heating a lot earlier.
This property is in a great location. The walk into Ventnor town and to the beach takes about 10 minutes. It is hilly but a pretty walk. The town has a good range of shops, cafes, restaurants and a couple of small supermarkets. The beach was clean and not too busy on the days we were there. There is a little harbour where you can buy crab and chips and other locally caught fish.
Our arrival at the cottage was quite stressful as the key wasn’t in the key safe so we had no way of getting in. The owner brought it round within an hour and a half but we had an anxious time wondering how long it would be before our message was picked up. The owner always got back to us to answer queries and thoughtfully sent us a message to let us know it was Ventnor carnival and fireworks on the evening we arrived.
The cottage, which is a self contained appartment on two floors within a larger house, was spacious and well-equipped. The kitchen had a large dining table which I would think would comfortably seat 8 people. There was a large fridge with a decent sized freezer compartment, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier and plenty of crockery and utensils. It looks out on to a pretty garden. It’s a garden that belongs to the main house so you can’t access it but it’s a nice outlook. There is also a small private courtyard for the tenants’ use which is nice and sunny in the mornings. We were disappointed with the main bathroom. The window had been sealed up and there was no extractor fan. This made for a damp room and unfortunately there was a lot of black mould around the bath and two little mushrooms grew on the tiles whilst we were there. The en suite bathroom did have an extractor fan and there was no mould but unfortunately the door didn’t shut properly. The lounge was large with comfortable sofas and chairs and some games and DVDs; a really nice room to relax in.
Thank you for the feedback. We have since had the bathroom renovated which included adding in a ventilation system to prevent the build up of mold.
We have also changed the cleaning service provider and have a lovely local person check the apartment over between lets.
