About Karen Griggs

We bought The Old Forge (and The Garden Shed) in August 2013 in a poor state, and since then have worked hard to restore both the property and the gardens. We love the results and are sure you will do too.

We love the space it gives us for our animals, and currently have two guinea pigs, three rabbits, eight chickens (although that number changes regularly!) and a small dog called Bob.

Karen Griggs purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Karen Griggs chose North Yorkshire

It's a stunning property, with the most exceptional gardens, in a brilliant location! It has all the benefits of living in a city but with countryside all around.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We were made to feel very welcome when we arrived and communication before our trip was really helpful providing places to eat and visit. The garden shed was absolutely beautiful, very well maintained and had everything needed. The owners really had thought of everything from toiletries and super soft towels to kitchen utensils and even a chimenea to keep us warn on the patio. It really was a home from home. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and we were free to wander and say hello to the chickens and rabbits. The surrounding area is very quiet and peaceful but at the same time not far (15-20 mins) from York. It's an excellent location for exploring. We (my husband and I) have stayed in lots of different accommodations from fancy hotels to camping but this has to have been one of our favourites. It really made the weekend a mini holiday. We loved it.

Absolute tranquility

  • 5 of 5

An absolutely stunning location, Karen makes you feel so welcomed and as if she has known you forever. The welcome pack was amazing and the fresh eggs from her chickens mmmmmmmmmm. This was a recuperation stay for my hubby who had had major abdominal surgery in April and it is just what the doctor ordered. Saturday 2nd Sept was a sunny warm day so we decided to stay at the cabin and chill, we used the Summerhouse and read books together, it was so relaxing. Karen brought the chickens over for me to meet and allowed me to hold them. I am so glad that I found this little hide away, we will certainly be back and hope to stay a bit longer.

Thank you so much to Karen and her family for letting people enjoy her wonderful shed and gardens.

Highly recommend people stay here if they just want to totally relax in the comfort of a shed and a wonderful family.

What a great find! This little place is a real gem of a holiday cottage for two and a dog! "The Shed" is immaculately presented with everything you could possibly want, clean as a whistle, very cosy and in a wonderful garden. The best welcome hamper we have ever had made us feel welcomed from the moment we walked in the door. Alfie, our rather large greyhound, soon found the most comfortable spot to lay out his bed and for him the garden was teeming with pleasures! A great base for York and surrounding areas and we went up to Whitby which was a very easy day trip. Karen, the owner, was so helpful and caring which added to the pleasures of staying here. The best place for stress-busting and I am sure we shall return when we just want to get away from it all. We could spend days just chilling out here without even moving from the garden! We can not recommend this cottage too much. Thank you for a wonderful break.

The Garden Shed - a perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully kept and presented. It is a lovely quiet and peaceful retreat to return to after spending a day in the nearby bustling city of York. We were made very welcome by Karen the owner, who was also very informative of local facilities/places of interest to visit and she also made sure that we had everything we could possibly need for our stay. We just wished that our visit had been longer.

Excellent

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay, the Garden Shed is beautiful, everything we needed was there. Hot shower, comfortable bed, log burner for those chilly nights and a beautiful garden to sit in of an evening. Just lovely for a nice relaxing break. We visited York and Castle Howard which are only a short drive away and also as recommended by Karen the Crown and Cushion, beautiful for lunch. We are looking to visit again in November this year to visit York Christmas Market. So nice to have somewhere we can leave the door open and our Shih Tzu Benni is safe in the garden.
