About the property

2 bed, 2 bath flat with stunning views, set in 4 acres of grounds

Our changeover days are either Thursday or Saturday so please enquire with us directly for availability for short breaks or longer stays. We are flexible in the off season.

A spacious first floor apartment with a master bedroom with en-suite (including whirlpool bath) and a second bedroom with a double bed. There is a separate shower room which includes washing and drying machines, toilet and basin. The lounge is spacious with fabulous views towards Thurlestone Sands, Thurlestone Rock and rolling countryside at the rear. There is a dining area with room to seat 6. The apartment building is set within around 4 acres of grounds, and includes dedicated car park.

Thurlestone is a pretty village with thatched homes, and village church. The flat is 5 minutes walk from the local pub, and also Thurlestone Village Store and Post Office. Four excellent beaches are all within walking distance.

It is great for dog walkers, with direct access to South West Coastal footpath and local dog friendly beaches.

The flat is located only 8 miles from Salcombe and 4 miles from Kingsbridge.

About Christopher Osborne

My wife, Sharon and I, have been holidaying in Thurlestone for the last 5 years or so. In the last 2 and half years we have been lucky enough to share this amazing location with our energetic daughter who absolutely loves visiting the local beaches.

Our flat is great for couples and families with children of all ages. We have accommodated the needs of families by providing a travel cot, high chair, monitors and toys based on our own experiences of renting holiday homes and have tried to think of everything to make life easier and enjoyable for you!

Fantastic for couples and families, golfers, bird watchers, walkers (we are literally on the door step of South West Coast path), surfers, paddleboarders, fisherman, or for those that purely wish to relax and take in the views.

Wonderful accommodation

My wife and I have just spent a week here and were delighted with our stay. The information provided in advance by the owner was comprehensive and detailed, probably the most thorough we have ever had and replies to my eMails were quick and positive.

The apartment enjoys a superb and peaceful location and, being on a hill above the village, provides wonderful views of the bay and countryside (from the lounge) and Burgh Island and the rocky coast (from the bathroom). The large lounge has huge windows on 2 sides so is very light and, when sunny, warms up without the need for heating. In fact the whole apartment was comfortably warm and we didn’t need to switch the heating on before it came on automatically at 5.30pm. It then warmed up very quickly and retained that warmth all evening. The large, modern TV is very nice and the WiFi worked well with only an occasional signal drop.

The kitchen is a good size with plenty of worktop space and all the equipment and utensils that one could possibly want. There is also a nice view of the bay so one has an interesting outlook while doing the washing up. The main bedroom is quite large with a comfortable bed and masses of wardrobe space. The other bedroom, however, is rather small. For a family of 4 the fact that there are 2 bathrooms would be useful. The property was clean and well maintained.

The village centre is only 8 minutes away by road or even less if one takes the shortcut across the lawn and adjacent field. There one finds the village shop and Post Office and the Thurlestone Hotel and attached Village Inn. We had excellent, though expensive, meals at both.

The surrounding area is very attractive and we enjoyed walking the coastal path in both directions. Hope Cove and Burgh Island are both worth a visit; at this time of year, when the little ferry across the Avon is not running, the island can be reached only by crossing the river some miles inland and then walking across the sand bar from Bigbury-on-Sea when the tide is out. In fact we did it as part of a very pleasant round walk starting from the National Trust car park at Ayrmer Cove near Ringmore. Kingsbridge, to which we went by bus, is a pleasant little town and we whiled away 2 interesting hours following the historical Town Trail. We then had an excellent lunch at the busy Mangetout café.

Given the superb accommodation and the beautiful area, we would recommend this property without hesitation.

Lovely apartment with fantastic views and close to the sea

Overall excellent. Spacious and comfortable rooms and stunning lounge with fantastic views. I loved the kitchen, especially liked the spa option on the bath.

Dog friendly and within a few metres of open fields and footpaths leading to the coast path. Overall a very relaxing winter break and somewhere I would definitely go again but next time for longer.

I would thoroughly recommend.

Very enjoyable stay.

We had a really enjoyable stay at The Downs.

Arrival wasn't great. We arrived just before 4pm expecting to be able to get in, but on reading the instructions again it says 6pm. I have to say I think this is too late. Also probably my fault for missing some info somewhere, but I always assumed from the photo that we would be in the annex, and was surprised to find that it was a first floor apartment in the main building.

Apart from those two things, everything else was great. The apartment is well equipped, very spacious, and has fabulous views.

The local pub is friendly and welcoming, with good food, and possibly the best chips anywhere.

As a dog owner one of the best things was to find out how dog friendly the whole of the South Hams area is. The dog enjoyed lots of beautiful beaches, and endless fuss from people in pubs. The field adjacent to the property is perfect for an early morning walk, and the bench overlooking Bigbury perfect for a glass of wine in the evening.

Al in all a very enjoyable holiday.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review. During the high season check in time is 6pm to allow our housekeepers to clean and prepare the flat. Timing is more flexible during the off season. The apartment is walking distance to the Village Inn pub (excellent food and drink), and village shop/ post office plus Thurlestone Golf and tennis club.

The Downs is within walking distance to both Thurlestone Sands (overlooking Thurlestone Rock) and Bantham beaches. Bantham is a small village with amazing beach, and pub (The Sloop). The beach is wonderful and overlooks Burgh Island. You can hire surf boards and there is a gastro van in the car park. It has recently been voted by Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 beaches in Europe!

The apartment is around 5 miles from Kingsbridge and 8 miles from Salcombe.
