Property type bungalow
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Lovely Bungalow in private grounds.

Our stunning Bungalow Set overlooking the beautiful Chavenat valley in landscaped gardens offering total privacy to sunbathe or take time to relax in the hot tub with a glass of champagne or cool of in the child safe above ground pool all within the eyeline of the terrace for all you parents out there. The uninterrupted views of the Chavenat valley offer the opportunity of bird watching and their delightful song and at night the skies fill with a glittering cascade of twinkling stars for all you gazers out there ( or perhaps it's just the romance) but whichever you will feel relaxed and ready for your days out viewing the beautiful towns and markets soaking up the relaxed and friendly French culture not forgetting all the wonderful food and wines ( my particular favourite). Chavenat is a tiny hamlet and the bungalow is set at the end of a no through road we have only one neighbour in the lane who are a friendly retired French couple they made us most welcome when we came here with our smattering French, this is a very relaxed location but (as all the French do) just hop in the car and the wonderful French countryside opens up and it is true to just lose yourself here is one of the best things you can do if you want to explore the real France, it is what we did which is why we now live here. The beautiful ancient city of Angouleme is 20 minutes away with fantastic architecture and lots of cooling alleyways housing so many fantastic restaurants you will be spoilt for choice, we live here and we still don't know which one to choose next. How about the stunning river cruises or the riverside sailing/ skiing/ swimming/ sailboarding and don't forget the ultimate for all you petrol heads the vintage world renown race around the battlements NOT TO BE MISSED! a real worldwide event in September and just 20 minutes from your haven in the country. If you like a touch of real class then Brantome known all over France as the Vienna of the Dordogne with it's truly stunning river cruises or canoeing, incredible shops carved into the rock faces it goes on and on and it is a must for all you culture lovers. How about Aubeterre -Sur-Dronne reputably one of the most beautiful towns in France and having been there I can tell you it is justified, but this is one of many wonderful and stunning towns and villages in and around this area not forgetting only 10 minutes away the beautiful market town of Villebois-Lavalette with its stunning chateau and ancient market under its remarkable timber cover which is stunning in it's own right. The list of places to see things to do go on and on from adventure parks with zip rides across bathing lakes and rivers to gardens of natural beauty/ restaurants to tiny cafes serving splendid traditional French cuisine to markets with the bustle of French life as it should be experienced.

Beautiful area, beautiful gardens - dirty house

  • 2 of 5

We were so excited to arrive at our gite. On first impressions it was everything we expected until closer inspection! Dog hairs and dirt everywhere. A shower that back flowed whenever we used it and infested with flies. Our sparkling blue pool turned a dark cloudy green after a few days and we had no instructions how to use the chemicals left. With the help of google translate we sussed it out but chemically checking the levels of a pool was not something we expected to be doing on holiday. The owners left their number to ring them but again this is not what we expect to do on holiday. Why not have instructions and guidance in a book like other holiday homes have? There was also a strong smell of poo from the cess pit pipe in the garden - we wonder if this is what attracted the flies - and think it had not been emptied for a while. It is a lovely area to stay but we were really disappointed with our gite due to old dirt and dig hairs, non working shower, struggles with the pool and fly infestation. It is the first gite we have stayed in that we would not return to and would not recommend.

Owner's Response: Well this is a huge surprise to us for the following reasons. Firstly we clean the house to within an inch of it's life and we have never had a complaint until now and we pride ourselves on just how how clean it is. In regards to flies, well we live in the countryside and are surrounded with fields and woodland so sometimes during ploughing or harvest you can get flies however it won't help if food waste is tipped directly into bins for two weeks in hot weather, when we went to prepare for new guests the bottom of the bin was swimming in beer wine milk and other undetermined fluids which left maggots by the hundred crawling up to the lid which have long since been dealt with, this is not the total cause of flies but will attract them for sure. In regards to the pool and jacuzzi we empty the jacuzzi clean and refill which i not cheap in france we then put pastels in the floatation device and explain to guests how it all works. The pool is much the same although we cannot empty this every time but we do so for each season and again we run through the basics and we believe people understand the instructions. The fosse septic conforms and was signed off by the local authorities two years ago and the French are red hot on this particular point, no we are not on mains so surely if the wind changes direction at some point you will as we have get a waft but the vent pipe is away from the house and not directly up the side as in most houses in the UK. The shower blocked and that is correct and when we went to prepare for new guests i pulled out the insert and removed hair (no surprise as as hair does this) and within seconds all was well, i do not expect guests to deal with this but we live fifteen minutes away and make it crystal clear we are alleways available to deal with any issues. People choose our property as it is in a valley and is secluded peaceful and private so explain we do not want to pester people with constant checking all is ok but as i have said we make it clear we are here for you should anything (however trivial it might seem occur) to help it's your holiday but things happen, we can't give seclusion and privacy and be right next door at the same time. As nice as these people are and they were very polite i thinks they should have chosen a gite with the owner right next door or attached as in a farm house or such like for all the reasons above

A warm welcome from the owners who kindly provided a meal for our late arrival and provisions for breakfast - very much appreciated. Lovely location, quiet, looking down on the forest (watch out for the deer in the mornings!). Plenty to see in the surrounding area. Hot tub was a great way to relax. Must be beautiful in summer and would be a great place to bring children. Our small dogs were also made most welcome.

Rural retreat

  • 4 of 5

Set in the countryside beautifully quiet but easy drive to lots of places of interest. The bungalow is quite french in style. Inside is relaxed and comfortable. It has an amazing huge garden with lots of trees and lovely views across the valley. The owners Penny and Ken were lovely and so welcoming even giving us a couple of bottles of wine on our arrival and invited us to dinner at their home with some friends. Definitely worth a visit for a quiet relaxed holiday in beautiful surroundings.

Special interest holidays:

Lots of events and markets during the summer period and we can supply flyers and leaflets etc to make your stay a memorable one.

From your destination to the nearest sandy beaches are located at St George de didonne about an hour and a half, this is a glorious sandy beach with long walkways and cycle paths.

Angouleme TGV station 30 mins, Limoges Poitiers and Bordeaux airport 1.5 hours each.

It is in our opinion a good idea to travel through the countryside by car to take in all the secret locations you will come across such as the monolithic churches/ bars cafes and in general be able to stop and just soak up the wonderful culture you will find along the way, we are near the border of the Charente and Dordogne so there is so much to see which ever way you turn but we can tell you from experience ( get lost ) seriously getting lost in france particularly between 12 and 2 is a must

Further Details:

We know and will share with you details of restaurants and markets we have experienced which while taking some of the mystery out of the journey will we think give you a great experience and give you the desire to return and explore some more, we have been here two years full time and still we are amazed at what we find and the friendly local people we meet and friends we have made.

There is a large supermarket/ bar/ cinema and restaurant only 5 klms away in Montmoreau and only 8 klms to the historic town of Villebois-Lavalette with lovely saturday market and rerstaurant.
