Lovely 16th Century Cottage, backing onto open fields

Bedrooms 2
Half Baths1
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Stunning, 2 bedroom, 16th century Cottage in Pickwick, Corsham, Wiltshire,

16th Century Grade 2 Listed Cottage in hamlet of Pickwick, recently refurbished from top to bottom & tastefully furnished including many antiques and family heirlooms.

Ideally located for Bath, Stonehenge, Avebury henge, the Cotswolds and many lovely gardens open to the public.

The stunning owner maintained cottage gardens, with a large shingled patio and Dovecote are a feature of this property. Other features include beamed ceilings and stone mullioned windows. Gas central heating, a gas real flame fire in the lounge and Everest Secondary Double Glazing mean the property keeps warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Like most old English cottages the bathroom is on the ground floor, accessed via the kitchen. This means it is not always suitable for groups which comprise entirely of adults as those sleeping in the attic bedroom have to pass through main bedroom to get to the bathroom. Albeit for those sleeping in the main double bedroom for night times there is a en-suite toilet (macerator) and small wash basin.

The attic bedroom is also accessed via a very steep flight of stairs which means it is not suitable for young children or those with limited mobility. Plus it has restricted head height so not ideal for those who are very tall.

Please note due to the number of bookings already made it is not possible to rent this cottage on a long term basis.

About Lorraine Vaun-Davis

Hi, I'm Lorraine & I live in the adjoining cottage.

For many years I rented this property out on a fixed term basis but as it has been a long held ambition to own a holiday let and having recently semi-retired I have decided to give it a go.

As you may have guessed from the description I love gardening and originally bought the cottage as the garden was very neglected. In fact so was the cottage! Some 15 years later it now looks very different.

I hope you like the look of the property and if you have any questions please e-mail me.

Lorraine Vaun-Davis purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Lorraine Vaun-Davis chose Wiltshire

I mainly purchased the cottage to get my hands on the very neglected garden. But also because my cottage next door has access rights across its back garden to get into mine.

Pickwick, if you have tried to look it up on a map is actually two sides of a road, rarely appears on maps and indeed the postcode for the cottage doesn't register on most sat navs.

In addition to the historic links with Charles Dickens, Pickwick is a delightful small hamlet with easy access to the M4, train & coach links to London which were important to me at the time of purchase.

What makes this cottage unique

I believe it is the gardens that make this property stand out. Consequently if you want to sit and enjoy someone else hard work this is the place for you.

I am also able to give you if you wish, plants which are grown in the garden as I am forever potting up things that self seed or spread. Which means you can take a reminder of your stay away with you.

Smaller patio overlooking field has cast iron table and 2 chairs. Dovecote with white doves. Greenhouse - used by owner. Large lawn with ancient cooking apple tree and large borders containing more traditional cottage garden plants. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen not included. Available at £10 per person per week. The property is cleaned weekly. Other: In addition to a front porch there is also a back porch which is the entrance typically used to access the property.

Unique, quirky, adorable little cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this cottage! It is so quirky and unique, yet has all the modern conveniences. Coming from the States, there were some things we weren't familiar with, but Lorraine was awesome to work with and helpful with anything we needed as she lives right there. We definitely would have loved staying longer here. Lorraine was worried that it would be too cramped for 4 adults, but we had no problems, and watching my 6'2" husband crawl up the attic stairs just added to our enjoyment. I was worried when I saw what a busy street it is on, but it is set quite far back from the road, and there are no houses behind the cottage, so it still felt secluded.

The location is fabulous. We took day trips to Lacock, Castle Combe, and Dyrham Park, and also Bath and Tintern Abbey. Our only regret is that we didn't leave enough time to just enjoy Corsham. It is a beautiful little town, and probably my biggest regret is not going through Corsham Court. The parish Church and the Court could be the setting for about every Gothic novel ever written, and one of my favorite things was walking around the cemetery all alone with the Elizabethan mansion peaking over the wall as the peacocks called to each other in the twilight. Make sure you leave time to enjoy Corsham!

Thanks, Lorraine, we loved staying at your cottage!! And if this wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime trip for us, we would definitely come back.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for this lovely review. I'm delighted that you all enjoyed your stay and am only sad I missed seeing Chris crawl up the attic stairs! Although if it makes hime feel better this is often how people tackle this flight of stairs. I hope the rest of your trip went well.

Delightful cottage

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend over August bank holiday for a family party close by. Wonderful garden , which we appreciated in superb weather. Plenty of seating to eat outside in shade and sun.

Owner very helpful and welcoming.

Very pretty cottage with good kitchen but noise from main road was annoying when sitting in garden, but not a problem inside.

Beds are very comfortable and mattresses not too bouncy.

Separate toilet off main bedroom is very, very small and we rarely used it, but downstairs bathroom fine, but only handheld shower head. SItting room rather dark, but as we had lovely weather we did not use it anyway.

Stairs are extremely steep and could have done with an extra hand rail at top of lower flight.

No rail to twisting steep stairs to upper bedroom - not a prob for us, but might be tricky for others, so do look at pictures and check with owner if unsure of suitability for your party

Perfect dickens charm

  • 5 of 5

We hired Lorraine's beautiful quaint cottage over our wedding - the groom and his ushers got ready and had photos at the cottage and myself and my new husband stayed there the night after our wedding. The house was so beautiful and so cosy. It had all the amenities we needed and added a perfect and charming backdrop for romantic photos. Lorraine was extremely helpful and accommodating and very flexible with our plans. The beds were very comfortable and the bedrooms lovely and airy with the added charm of the little top room

up a narrow and windy stair case which made you feel like you were living in the original era the house was built in.the gardens are stunning and full of flowers, the area is so quiet and we didn't hear the road from inside at all.

Although we only live around the corner we would most certainly stay here again and would highly recommend this home to any family and friends who come to visit. Thank you Lorraine! :) Lucie & Louie x

Great property exactly as described and as per photos - no surprises

A lovely property very well appointed and beautifully furnished - cosy and perfect for a stay where you want to relax at 'home' rather than be out for meals. Would have no hesitation in recommending to others.
