Magical and Luxurious

  • 5 of 5

A warm friendly welcome from our hosts who have refurbished their family home to the highest standard.

This was a magical experience staying in a proper castle with turrets and circular stone staircases and family portraits (and stories of friendly ghosts) - for us and our three boys! Our bedroom bay window looked out over a beautiful garden and the river. I recommend this to anybody looking to step back in time and yet enjoy all the modern luxuries.

Out of this world

Words are not enough for our week at Newbiggin. The castle is enormous and the beds are more comfortable than the Ritz. Our boys age 14, 10 and 6 loved the castle and the wonderful garden - all magical. The owners are wonderfully kind and for those of you interested in history the wealth of stories at this household is unrivalled. For nature and adventure this is the place to be. We have already rebooked for Easter 2016 and cannot wait.

A fairy tale come true.

  • 5 of 5

Our week in Cumbria was the most amazing family holiday because of this stunning castle and its owners. From the moment we arrived, it took our breath away. We were welcomed the moment we pulled onto the drive and then shown to the wing, which the website does not do justice. It is the most spectacular building, oozing with both warmth and history. It has been lovingly restored, with good taste and practicality. There is more space than you can possibly imagine, which sent our teenage children into a flurry of excitement (reverting to times before computer games) and immediately playing a game of hide and seek.

The grounds are as spectacular as the castle, with a flowing river running the whole length of the garden. We had hours of fun, just playing and exploring within the grounds, old fashioned croquet (courtesy of our wonderful hosts), taking us back to times gone by.

The castle is within easy access of the Lake District, Pennines and Hadrian's Wall, but away from the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist areas.

I could fill the website with a review of this amazing place, but will more succinctly say, if you want a fairy tale holiday, with peace, tranquillity, a living history, time to be a family, romance, splendour, owners that you want to befriend forever, a place that every member of the family wants to return to next year, the sound of the river and a view of stunning grounds from your four-poster bed...

(Not so succinct after all).

This is just perfect!!

The west coast is approximately 40 minutes away.

A car is recommended. Penrith station is 7 miles away with a great line to London with Virgin Trains. If you love trains the Carlisle-Settle Railway is within a mile of he house. Though your closest station is Langwathby. The M6 is 7 miles away and the A66 2 miles away. Our guests explore the Pennines, Lakes, Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall, the West Coast and Yorkshire Dales.

Penrith 7 miles, Appleby 6 miles, Ullswater 12miles
