Outstanding
This house and property is beautiful! You have everything you need or would want at the house. The property is right on the water and is private and the sunsets are gorgeous. This house also has a wonderful ramp that I used to load and unload my belongings instead of using the stairs. Theresa, the owner, is a wonderful host, extremely easy to communicate with and responds right back with any questions, etc. I loved my stay here and I am looking forward to staying here again.

Anniversary getaway Mar 10-16 2024
Traveled from PA to SBR to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary with our pup. Host was amazing and responded with lightning speed! House was warm, cozy, accommodating and provided us with amazing sunsets and wonderful views of the sound. Lots of things closed but enough to grab some good food, wine and souvenirs. The house is perfect for families with lots to do on the sound and the ocean is only minutes away. Hubs, pup and I had a wonderful celebration week!

Remains the Ideal Location for Us...after 4 stays!
Was either our 4th or 5th stay at SBR, and regardless, we still love this home just as much as our 1st stay. One noted difference this stay seemed to be that the house was even cleaner than before -- meticulous! Also love that the beds were made & bath towels were waiting...no having to schlep/pack them. Swing Belly's location cannot be beat, both quiet and private (vs RunBoat and other busy neighborhoods). Personally, we also appreciate the proximity to ramp #49. Kitchen is uber-stocked with any/all utensils and cookware one could ever need. Sunsets (and even sunrise reflections) are gorgeous. Ophelia chased us out (our decision), knowing the congestion & long drive we would face if we waited to leave the island after she blew over...but even with a vacation cut short, we left truly content.

Why they chose this property

After decades of renting cottages on Hatteras Island, we knew what we liked and set about finding/creating a house with great common space, a little reading nook, great views that bring the outside in, a big kitchen and a spacious deck with lots of furniture. That is Swing Belly's Roost (we never found out the genesis of the name & so created a apocryphal pirate to fit the image -- you'll find him out front on the cottage sign). The cathedral great room with kitchen & island face the sound with a wall of windows. The loft is the ideal place to read with 2 chaise lounges, book cases, mini-fridge & great sound views of the pelicans & ospreys. We have a collection of local history and nature books and other books by local authors. You'll recognize lots of art from local galleries on our walls. The deck is large enough for everyone to have their own chair or lounger. & the whole cottage is nestled in a grove of live oak trees some of which are over 100 years old! The ramp out front winds through this same grove & is wonderful for wheeled luggage, wheeled coolers and older dogs. The sunsets are phenomenal whether you're on the deck or at the end of the boardwalk to the sound. We've yet to see the green flash, but some of our local friends have -- so we'll keep trying. Other favorite activities are sitting in the hot tub as the sun goes down while the lights of Hatteras Village come on to the south. There are no houses to our south for about 1/2 mile so SBR is extra private. Also star gazing is great and you can also see the beam from the Cape Hatteras lighthouse (north in Buxton) sweep across the sky. We love to cook; our kitchen is equipped with pretty much everything you need for prepare gourmet meals. If there's a kitchen gadget that you consider essential and we don't have -- let us know! We started a tradition of eating our steamed clams on the deck & throwing the clamshells into the trees -- you'll see our mini-midden if you look down

What makes this property unique

The sound, the sound, the sound! There is so much to do on the sound: windsurfing, kiteboarding, kayaking, SUPing, clamming, crabbing and fishing. You can even anchor a small boat!
The beach, the beach, the beach! Our cottage is in Frisco (south of Cape Hatteras) where the ocean is warmed by the Gulf Stream and gets warmer faster in the spring/summer and stays warmer later in the fall than the beaches north of the Cape. There are multiple beach access points close to our cottage, but our favorite is the ORV accessible National Seashore beach a few miles south near the Billy Mitchell Airport -- it is wide and flat and tucked in a curve that makes it perfect for families! It's great for boogie-boarding, beach volleyball, campfires and cookouts. There are also several additional National Seashore beach access points within a 10 minute drive where you can park and walk over the dunes via a boardwalk -- and some have bathrooms and showers to rinse off sandy feet.
The seafood, the seafood, the seafood. Our favorite places are to buy seafood Are Buxton Seafood, Risky Business and Harbor House Seafood.
History, history, history. From the iconic Cape Hatteras lighthouse to the numerous shipwrecks exposed and then re-covered by storms southern Hatteras Island has it all. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum has interesting exhibits and offers programs on the unique history & culture of the OBX. We've learned everything from the latest on the "Lost Colony" to how to make clam fritters from a renowned cook!
