Barn in Slapton, Nr. Kingsbridge, Dartmouth, Salcombe and Totnes, South Devon, England - Unique, Peaceful Location, Just A Mile From The Sea, With Beautiful Gardens And Grounds Of 8 Acres
The barn is a fabulous blend of traditional and contemporary styles, featuring exposed beams, vaulted ceilings, oak wood floors, flagstone floors and stylish open planned living areas.
Sleeping up to 10, Loworthy Barn is a large, detached house, nestled in a beautiful south Devon valley in its own secluded grounds of 8 acres. Perfect for large families, big groups and celebrations The barn is a stunning 3 storey conversion, providing 4 very large airy bedrooms, great living spaces and large farmhouse style kitchen. The barn was designed with families and pets in mind, and has a relaxed informal feel about it.
Our unique setting, with beautiful gardens, grounds, wild-life and unspoilt views of the surrounding Devon countryside makes this a truly magical setting. The location is the real wow factor of Loworthy Barn. It is very rural, peaceful and secluded, and sits in a beautiful South Devon valley just 1 mile from the sea. The barn is approached initially by a shared ¼ mile driveway and then a long private tree-lined drive, leading to the barn and plenty of parking. As you arrive, there is a large duck pond with a small island on your right, and a small stream runs down through the garden and grounds.
At the front of the property, there is a walled, Mediterranean style courtyard, with a large olive tree, a small lawned area with a rustic gate leading to an area of tropical plants, with lush bamboo, tree ferns and gunnera, a stream and bridge. At the rear of the barn is a large south facing terrace, with plenty of seating, a large outside dining table and BBQ, perfect for large groups, entertaining, celebrations or just chilling out with a glass of wine. From the terrace there are un-spoilt far reaching views across the huge lawn and beyond to the paddocks, then fields and woodland of the Slapton Ley Nature reserve. From the rear terrace and gardens, there really are no other properties in sight!
You will regularly see buzzards, woodpeckers and swallows, as well as all the wildlife associated with the pond and streams, such as dragonflies, newts, frogs and even kingfishers and herons. At night you will frequently hear owls and see the light from Start Point Lighthouse in the distance. When the wind is in the right direction you can even hear the waves breaking along Slapton Sands.
Bedroom 1 is a large room with Kingsize bed, 2 french style bedside tables, large French style wardrobe. Double doors leading straight out into pretty ‘Mediterranean style’ courtyard garden. Adjacent bathroom 1. Bedroom 2 (Master bedroom) has a Kingsize bed, with French style furniture, including armoire. A beautiful, large, airy bedroom, with two sets of French doors with Juliet balconies and views to the courtyard one side, and open countryside the other; this really is a stunning feature of this property. En-suite bathroom with Fired Earth rolltop bath, hand-shower, washbasin and wc. On the top floor, bedrooms 3 and 4 are both huge rooms with lots of space. Both rooms have one double bed and Bedroom 4 also has 2 single beds. These rooms share a family bathroom with bath, shower, wc and sink.
The property has 3 bathrooms. One on each floor. Bathroom 1 is a contemporary walk-in, wet room style, with floor to ceiling ‘fired earth’ tiling, a luxury ‘Grohe’ rain shower, marble bowl sink and wc. Bathroom 2 is the en-suite for the master bedroom and has a luxurious Fired Earth rolltop freestanding bath, washbasin and wc. Bathroom 3 is on the top floor and shared by bedrooms 3 & 4. It has a charming pebble floor, bath/shower, wash basin and wc.
The kitchen is another real feature of the barn and a great family room. Rustic stone flooring, farmhouse sink, bespoke hand crafted kitchen units and stable doors out onto the rear patio and garden. The kitchen has a very large central ‘island’ with oak work top, large walk in larder, rustic kitchen table with ‘church pew’ bench and seating, a dual fuel Rangemaster cooker (electric oven/gas hobs), dishwasher and fridge. A great space for socialising and great for a bit of cooking if that’s your thing! Living space is all on the middle floor, with wooden floors and is airy and open plan in keeping with the contemporary barn style.
There is a large dining area, seating 12 which sits under a vaulted ceiling and huge roof light window. Double oak doors lead into a large lounge area with settees, coffee table, open fire, TV (satellite), DVD player. Double French window doors lead onto a small patio area.
In all, the property has 8 acres of gardens and grounds with horses, goats, sheep, chickens and ducks living on site.
Slapton is 5-10 mins by car, and has a village shop and 2 very good pubs. The beach at Slapton Sands is just past the village, and at the other end of the beach is Torcross, where there are cafes, a good pub famous for its Fish and Chips, and a little village shop. Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands, Totnes, Kingsbridge, Salcombe, are all within easy reach by car, as is Bantham Beach, famed for its surfing and now kite-surfing, plus many other beautiful Devon.

About David Seear
Jenny and I fell in love with Loworthy Barn about 9 years ago and have since spent that time converting it into the beautiful house that it is today. Our children have grown up in this stunning tranquil setting making camps and playing in streams and spending endless days on the beach or in the sea. We are keen gardeners and have created a beautiful garden with many features that we hope you will enjoy. We have run Loworthy as a hobby small holding and have some animals living on site like horses, goats, chickens and ducks. We continue to live and work locally and personally maintain and run Loworthy Barn as a holiday letting and small holding.

We have just had a great week at Loworthy Barn. the property is beautiful with grounds and surroundings to match. We arrived to find a lovely welcome pack and fresh flowers. A nice touch to start a holiday. The owners Dave and Jenny have put a lot of effort into making this a great place to stay for a holiday from leaving a very well filled information book full of ideas of places to visit, things to do and places to eat to toys and games for all ages with in the house and lots of places and things to do outside especially for our grandchildren who loved playing in the small stream, in the secret bamboo garden not to mention feeding the goats and collecting the chicken eggs a truly great place to have a holiday
Lovely house, fantastic holiday!
We are just back from a fantastic two weeks at Loworthy. A really lovely house. It's beautifully furnished and it slept our party of 9 with ease. There are 2 very large bedrooms on top floor with multiple beds - great for kids, families. Fantastic gardens with amazing views. Jenny and David could not have been nicer. The children loved all the animals on the property and even enjoyed a pony ride courtesy of Jenny! We'll be back.
We have had the most amazing week away at Loworthy Barn. The barn is absolutely stunning and set in beautiful gardens. We arrived to a lovely welcome pack of local produce and gorgeous smell of lilies. It is ideally located 10 minutes from the beach. This barn is ideal if you want to get away from it all! A little piece of heaven. Thank you David and Jenny for making our stay very special. See you again soon. The Leaver Family x
A wonderful holiday
We had a fantastic holiday in Loworthy. It fitted two families comfortably and the garden and grounds were great for the children to run about in. Dave and Jenny really went the extra mile - fresh lilies on the table, offering pony rides to the children and helping us to find the best beaches and coves to explore.
We had a fantastic holiday at Loworthy Barn, the weather was perfect and the location even better! We felt very relaxed and loved the fact that the barn was secluded and surrounded by its own land where the children could explore and make friends with the animals on site. It was ideally located being within a short drive to the beaches at Slapton and Blackpool Sands and to then return after a busy day to sit and relax on the terrace with a glass of wine was perfect! The accommodation was lovely, feeling very homely with everything you could ask for and more. My husband and I stayed in the master bedroom and loved opening the curtains in the morning to look out onto the views either side of the barn. We would definitely recommend a stay at Loworthy and hope to be back soon!
