About Charles Stewart
Charles and Jenny first visited the River Yealm by yacht in 2002 with their three girls, after circumnavigating France through the canals and the French coast. Since then they have gradually moved their current yacht "Shangri la" in family holidays from Turkey and she is now based just up from Coastguards on the Yealm. When they first saw One Old Coastguards, they fell in love with the location and the property and the comfort of a "land based" yacht - the only disadvantage of not moving does not seem to matter - with the ever changing views and river activity!
Charles Stewart purchased this Cottage in 2015
Why Charles Stewart chose Newton Ferrers
Old Coastguard cottage waterside location, surrounded by National Trust land and the scenic costal walks provide an unbeatable combination. We loved the character of this 1835 listed cottage and the rich history of the Coastguard cottages, built largely to prevent smuggling and rescue shipwrecked sailors.
What makes this Cottage unique
The location of this cottage is unique and the views are dynamic. Being near the water allows one to be in tune with the weather and tides at all times. In addition the area is a walker's paradise. The surrounding area is outstanding with villages to explore and the cities of Plymouth and Exeter nearby. Indoors, the old range is a reminder of the history of the cottage when the coastguard protected us from smugglers and wreckers. However we do like the convenience of an Aga and induction hob for modern cooking! In addition the advantages of broadband and other modern facilities are also on offer.

Breathtaking location and such fun on the river
Such a wonderful place to stay, completely breathtaking!
Great location. Away from it all
If you want peace and quiet in a beautiful location with great views, this is for you.
The cottage is well equipped and comfortable. The weather meant that we made the most of the outside, the view and using the boat .
A fantastic week.
Very beautiful cottages with river views from almost all rooms, beautiful walk path to different directions, very nice place for bbq, crabbing for kids, nice and safe dinghy, calm and nice village!
we will definitly get back soon!
We are glad you enjoyed your time at One Old Coastguards and look forward to seeing you in the warmer weather!
Charles and Jenny have made this beautiful, remote little coastguards cottage snug and homely. The Aga is heaven and the renovation is sympathetic and authentic as well as having all mod cons to make it a really lovely place to stay. We came in the mid-winter which is not for the faint hearted but enjoyed the adventure - the walk to the cottage through the woods, the incredible views towards the mewstone and down to kitley, and up the estuary. If you are sea people its very heaven and a hundred different walks outside your door. Go! Its Wonderful.
A Little Piece of Paradise
We had the most amazing stay here at the Old Coastguards Cottage. Billy the Ferry man is absolutely hilarious and always around to give you a ride across from the Harbour if you need it, otherwise there is a lovely rowing boat that can be used to get up and down the Estuary. We did the lovely coastal walk to Wembury beach which takes about 30-40 mins and has the most stunning views. We did a paddle boarding lesson which started from the Harbour across the way so perfect and a lot of fun! we swam in the water every day which was lovely, even did a bit of snorkeling . The Ship Inn, The Swan Inn and The Dolphin are all accessible by boat (make sure you know when the tide is going out though as can be very muddy) I would recommend the Swan Inn for food it is delicious. The cottage itself is well equipped with everything that you could need including life jackets. The fire is an absolute delight and lovely and warm after a long day of walking and activities. The outside space is gorgeous and the view is out of this world, it really does feel like your in another country. The local town has everything you need, a butchers, co-op, post office, cash point and pub. parking was very easy. I cannot fault anything about out stay and would highly recommend to any couples, families or groups of friends. We will definitely be back.
Thank you very much Charles and Jenny for sharing your little piece of Paradise with us.
Heather & Darryl :)
From the moment we were dropped off on the private quay, until it was time to leave a week later, we felt we were in another glorious world. The rowing across the estuary added adventure and fun without being a chore. The cottage itself was lovely, with amazing views and everything we needed for a comfortable stay. So much to do and see in the area but so hard to drag yourself away from the beautiful cottage. We look forward to returning soon...
