Guestbook comments from the owner

Lovely cottage with everything you need fro a relaxing break. Fully equipped with washing machine , tumble dryer and dishwasher. Everything to a very high standard. Set in a friendly fishing village. Fantastic walks right from the front door. Great little shops and Fab pubs in the village all with in walking distance to top it off breakfast on the beach from the café.

We had a really enjoyable break and the teenagers are asking to go back again!- October 2014

Stayed over bank holiday weekend and still Beer was peaceful and unspoilt. Parking space outside the property with a very helpful neighbour on hand for any issues if needed. Very spacious house, extremely clean with everything inside you would expect from your own home and more!. Quiet garden with views over Beer, 2 mins walk to the village centre for provisions, pub, chippy etc, 5 mins to the lovely seafront, 5 mins to the coastal path for great walks and views. Perfect holiday base in a great location - can't wait to go back again!

Stayed for a weekend in November and had some beautiful weather so enjoyed some lovely walks around the village and over the cliffs to Branscombe although would have been happy to spend more time indoors in front of the wood burner and the huge TV!

The cottage is just a couple of minutes walk from the village centre and has a parking space right outside which I understand is unusual for the village. Lovely garden with lots of seating areas. Kitchen is large and really well equipped and some comfy armchairs to keep the cook company. Owners seem to have thought of everything, we even found a lasagne dish in the cupboards.

Bedrooms cosy and have brand new duvets and pillows and was really pleased that the curtains are lined so I had a great nights sleep. Neighbours really helpful and friendly too, can't wait to go back in the summer. 2014

Absolutely perfect. A real home from home. Highly recommended.

Loved the house as soon as I walked through the door. Everywhere was clean & tidy & had a fresh scent. The decor was exactly to my taste with a lovely 'beachy' theme. The sofas were big & squashy, perfect for relaxing after a hard day at the beach (a few minutes walk down the hill). The kitchen had everything you could need, with good quality appliances & equipment. There's a great selection of books & reading matter. There's a lovely patio set in the tidy stepped garden & benches at the top of the garden with views over the village. Friendly neighbours & caretakers a couple of doors away.

Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms. Lovely comfy bed in master bedroom (only 2 of us so didn't use the other rooms, although they looked equally comfy). Plenty of space for clothes etc. Again, good quality furnishings, duvets, etc. The bathroom had a decent bath with shower over, and plentiful hot water.

We took our spaniel, Flynn & were pleasantly surprised to find that dog dishes & even poop bags were provided although we had taken our own.

There was a comprehensive guide book to the property which had all the information needed regarding the home & operating instructions for all appliances etc.

The house has parking for a small/medium car at the front although those with huge 'gas guzzlers' may prefer to use the public car park a few steps away down the hill.

Beer itself is a small friendly village with pubs, restaurants, a deli, post office, bakers, a chemist & many other small shops. The Dolphin Hotel is a couple of minutes walk away & has public & lounge bars & serves decent food including hearty Sunday lunches. The cafes on the beach serve hot & cold food & drinks.

Particularly recommended are the fresh crab sandwiches & 'damn the diet' (huge cornets topped with clotted cream) ice creams from Chapples (the middle one of the 3).

The Donkey Sanctuary, a few miles down the road towards Sidmouth is well worth a visit, especially for those of us who love these beautiful gentle creatures. Admission is free too, so good for families with children who don't want to spend a fortune.

Many other lovely places to visit locally, most of which can be found in the many books, leaflets etc at the cottage.

I've been staying in Beer in various properties, hotels, caravans etc for over 45 years & can honestly say that Hogscliffe is top of my list. Beer always makes me feel like I'm coming home, & now I've discovered this lovely cottage even more so. Will definitely return ASAP

A great, homely and comfortable cottage which I would recommend to any of my friends.

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I and our 2 teenage boys loved this cottage. It was very comfortable and quite deceptive in size. Three good sized bedrooms, a lovely lounge and a large kitchen diner with everything we needed. There was an additional cloak room downstairs and a fabulous stepped garden as well as a patio area with BBQ, table and chairs. The location was spot on and very close to the beach. Parking was a bit tight and we did end up parking in the car park nearby but we were fine about that. We had to go in school holidays when everything is very busy and it was difficult parking in nearby Lyme and Sidmouth. We would love to return, however, out of high season and we will make the effort to do so. The property was very well cleaned and maintained and had the added touches that made us feel welcome and at home.

Owner's Response: Thank-you for your wonderful review it is so helpful to other people staying and for me to change things. The cottage is rather 'tardis' like doesn't do it justice from the front! Excellent you had a good stay and I look forward to welcoming you back again. Thanks.

Home from home!

  • 5 of 5

My 3 sisters & I have recently had a wonderful holiday at Hogs. We really just wanted to stay in Beer and have a week of chilling out at the beach (not travel to other nearby places), but we thought it might turn out to be tricky given that one sister is in a wheelchair and would need to be driven down to the beach. However the fishermen's place at the beach has several car parking spaces for hire - problem solved. The house itself is lovely with everything you could possibly need; a real home from home. We went to the Anchor and the Dolphin pubs several times to eat and drink - both are good. It really was a fantastic holiday. If I could live there, I would!

Smart and well equipped and also like a cosy 'home from home'.

  • 5 of 5

It's a lovely house that has been nicely decorated in a classy, seaside style. There are comfortable big sofas and Cath Kidston throws, a well equipped and smart kitchen with plenty of accessories, comfortable, light-filled bedrooms. There are lots of lovely little touches with sweet seaside accessories and twinkling solar lights in the garden. The patio is nicely shaded as the week was very hot but the top of the garden gets plenty of sun if you need more. There's plenty of storage space with a separate utility room. Two of the bedrooms don't have wardrobes and instead have hangers on hooks on the wall and that worked absolutely fine for us. Two of the bedrooms are roomy and the third is quite wee, but I was in that room and it worked fine for me. There are beach chairs available and plenty of cosy blankets about the place so you can wrap up if the evening air on the patio gets a bit chilly. The house felt welcoming, comfortable, and it just seemed to be set up to work well. The walk into the village and beach takes no time at all; the house is really nicely located.
