Unique 4 bedroom 5 bathroom South Facing Alpine Retreat with Mountain Views on the Italian/Swiss border
Nestled high up at an altitude of 1650 m in this secluded ancient and protected village, a stunning south facing mountain retreat with views overlooking the slate rooftops and pine forests. The stone house dates back to medieval times and has been recently restored as a chic alpine summer-winter holiday home with modern technology at your fingertips.
With incredible summer alpine walks up to the Grand St Bernard lakes and famous cycle routes, mountain biking opportunities and horse riding the village sits on the ancient 'Via Francigena' path which runs from Constantinople ( Istanbul) via Rome to Canterbury and is the last village in Italy before ascending the Grand Saint Bernard pass to Switzerland (only open in summer).
The house is a short drive to the south facing ski slopes of St Rhemy-Crevacol with reasonably priced ski rental, ski school and free parking. A small local ski resort with plenty of off-piste skiing and non existent queues. Cross country skiing and a ski fun park and tennis courts are also close by and variety of more extensive skiing ( For example Cervinia//Zermatt, La Thuile/La Rosiere or Courmayeur) is within an hours drive. (please see Activity information).
A unique and beautifully designed restorative spa room in the original cellar includes a 5x2 m stone hot pool with cascade and massage jets, sauna and shower, underfloor heating and reclaimed beams with original hand carvings said to be left by Napoleons soldiers during their passage over the pass in 1803. There are 4 bedrooms, 3 with ensuite shower rooms and the 4th opposite the family bathroom/laundry room (with washing machine and drying facilities). One bedroom has its own private balcony. The ground floor TV/family room has a sofa bed with an adjacent 5th shower room. The entire 1st floor with main balcony is now a spacious open plan kitchen-dining room with cosy chairs and a sofa around the Charnwood wood burner. Bose Sound system with docking station, USB charging sockets and internet access in every room, thermostatically controlled heating throughout and a ready supply of hot water ensuring your absolute comfort throughout your stay. UK freesat reception with 60" flat screen and blu-ray disk player in the TV room. DVDs and family games available.
2 sunny balconies with lovely views. A small sunny garden with large table and benches to seat 12 or more and deckchairs in summer. There is a village bar and restaurant serving local and continental cuisine- children very welcome.
The nearest airport is Turin, just over 1 hours drive. Easy parking in the village. Petrol station, small shop and pizzeria with cash machine 5 minutes drive or within walking distance in summer. Plenty more restaurants, pharmacy and local supermarket in the nearby villages of Etroubles.

About Edoardo Cavallo
I am originally from Piemonte in Italy but have lived in Buckinghamshire, England for the past 22 years with my English wife. We have 2 teenager daughters and spend most of our holidays in Italy, skiing in the winter or mountain hiking and biking in the summer. I am a Design Engineer by profession.
Edoardo Cavallo purchased this Chalet in 2005
Why Edoardo Cavallo chose Saint Rhemy
We fell in love with this unique village back in 2005 and dreamt of buying a little mezzanine flat. We somehow managed to purchase the entire old stone house before it was divided up into apartments. It needed years of patient restoration and we finally finished in December 2014.
What makes this Chalet unique
The old stone house, dating back to medieval times, is south facing with lovely mountain views and nestled in the protected and unspoilt village of Bourg de St Rhemy. This ancient village has a tremendous history being the ultimate resting place and sanctuary before the pass over to Switzerland. Napoleon and his soldiers used this pass and stayed in the village in 1803. Until relatively recently, the Grand St Bernard pass was the main access between Northern Europe and Italy. It is also on the actual ancient 'Via Francigena' pathway which starts in Rome and ends in Canterbury.

This house is exactly as described to use the word fantastic is an understatement i
This house has been restored to a first clas spec it’s location is absolutely amazing ski wise we preferred to travel half hour to the larger ski area of Pila however our view of crevacol may be tainted as the weather was bad on the days we went but if your looking to take a group of up to ten people for a most remembrance ski holiday this is the place
All contact with the owners Edoardo was prompt and informative every question or query was answered prompt.
We have great memories of a fantastic family holiday Thankyou
Wonderful holiday and house
We stayed here for a week a party of 7. The house is set literally in the mountains with amazing views. The house itself is decorated really well in fact greg / white colour scheme was what attracted us to the house and it didn't disappoint. The whole house was well equipped and kitchen especially had everything you may need, we found the house to be large enough to accommodate all of us without feeling on top of each other. The pool area is great and the Tv had all the uk channels much to the kids delight! The village is tiny but beware the church bells but you get used to them!!! Plenty of lovely walks from the house, worth visiting courmayeur, Aosta for some shops and bars, the Saint Bernard hospice in the mountains. Le troubles the local village is lovely with a small shop and few restaurants, our village had hotel Swiss which we had a meal at it was very traditional but a lovely experience!! The owner was very helpful and accommodating throughout and left some lovely gifts of wine, cheese and nibbles for our arrival thank you!
Beautiful mountain retreat provides great base for multi resort skiing
Instead of staying in one ski resort, we decided to rent a house that would enable us to ski in a number of different resorts. This sumptuous and beautiful mountain home enabled us to ski in 4 resorts across 5 days, providing skiing in Italy, France and Switzerland all in one holiday. Although the resorts are up to an hour's drive away, we were able to ski in La Thuile / La Rosier on day 1, the local resort of Crevacol on Day 2 and 5, Cervinia / Zermatt on Day 3 Courmayeur on day 4. Skiing in a variety of resorts enabled us to chase the best weather and ski conditions in the area. The surprise resort was the local resort of Crevacol, 10 minutes drive from the house. Although small with only 13 runs, the views were stunning and the place was empty (even during half term week) which made it our favourite compared to the busier larger resorts. The property is beautifully furnished with the stand out feature being the spa facilities that were used every day after skiing as the perfect way of relaxing after a day on the slopes.
If you want a luxurious mountain home with access to different resorts and virtually your own private resort at Crevacol, this is the place for you. - 10 out of 10
That such a beautiful house really exists...it's a miracle
Our family of 8 persons (6 adults; 2 children aged 6 and 8 years) had the good fortune to stay in this fantastic house for one week. Previous guests wrote it already and we can fully confirm their opinion: the house is amazing and exceeded all our expectations! It is even more beautiful than on the pictures.
Upon entering there is a spacious hall, with on the same level a comfortable TV room and bathroom. The first floor consists of a large and cozy kitchen in which really all you need is present. We were also treated to goodies from the region (cookies, wine, cheese, sausage), with which the sympathetic owners wanted to welcome us. What a warm gesture!
From the large balcony on the same floor there is a wonderful view of the mountains.
On the second and third floor are four bedrooms with comfortable box springs. Each bedroom has an adjoining, spacious and beautiful bathroom.
And then the basement...every day, and especially after our hikes, we greatly enjoyed the luxury heated pool with the waterfall and jet streams. In particular, the children could not get enough of it!
The renovation of the house has been done very sound and tastefully, and the materials used are of excellent level.
We have a lot of appreciation for the great hospitality and helpfulness of the owners. Communication with them was fast and easy, the information we received was clear and we also got several suggestions for restaurants, shops and activities.
Our stay was wonderful and relaxing and we would like to come back!
Beautiful property in a delightful village
This stunning house is tucked away in a beautiful mountain village, only a few minutes drive from the slopes.
The property has been restored to a very high standard and offers very comfortable and spacious accommodation. Attention to detail is second to none with underfloor heating in the hallway for drying out ski boots etc, a very well equipped kitchen, log burner and a separate bathroom for each extremely comfortable bedroom.
The icing on the cake is the basement hot pool / jacuzzi and sauna room. Perfect for relaxing after a day's skiing.
A perfect break to de-stress in the mountains
The property sits in a quite historic village and has been beautifully renovated with amazing attention to detail and very cool design. I loved the local feel to the area away from the tourists - we practically had the entire area to ourselves. Skiing locally in Crevacol is gentle but amazingly easy to access, cheap and the views spectacular. At this time of year we also had the slopes to ourselves. Most skiers were ski-touring up the opposite valleys which looked spectactular and something I'd like to try next time. The owners had informed the local restaurants of our stay which ensured a very warm welcome with fine dining on the mountainside (and multiple prosecco breaks). The best bit is the pool and sauna - a great way to unwind after a day on the slopes. All in all a very nice weekend and very different to the usual ski experience.
The local Crevacol ski slopes have easy free parking and ski rental. Lessons can be arranged with the ski school. Ideal for families - beautiful views, 3 friendly bars/restaurants on the slopes, safe and queuing is virtually nonexistent! Off piste skiing popular and vast. Ski guides can take the advanced back to your home. More extensive piste skiing is 1 hour away at Cervinia, Chamonix, La Thuile and Verbier in Switzerland. Cross country skiing nearby. Racquet walking from the village. Summer horse riding, extensive alpine cycling and walking. Several walking routes available from the door. A must is the trek up to the Grand St Bernard pass on the Swiss border with lake, hospice and museum. Here they still breed the famous St Bernard dogs. Chic restaurant and bar in village. Petrol station, small shop and pizzeria with cash machine 5 minutes drive or within walking distance in summer. Local supermarket and several restaurants a short drive away in Etroubles and St Oyen. Hypermarkets in Aosta. Both Italian and French are spoken in this area. Catering can be arranged at home and in winter, a special dining experience on the snowy slopes of Crevacol can be arranged with collection from the base by snow mobile up to the mountain restaurant.
