A character cottage centrally located in Rye, close to many historic attractions, antique shops, art galleries, ancient inns, and not least within a few minutes walk of glorious views over the River Rother to Romney Marsh. The wonderful beaches and sand dunes at Camber Sands are within easy reach, as is Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Whilst the cottage has gas central heating throughout, a major feature is the log fire in the living room, making the cottage wonderfully cosy throughout the year. The bay windows to the front have window seats with lovely views down Mermaid Street, making it easy to imagine that you have arrived back in a different age! The cottage is sympathetically furnished mainly with antiques, but has all modern conveniences that today's guests expect.

Why michael trevillion chose Rye
Mermaid Street is one of the most famous and loveliest streets in the whole of the UK. We had always dreamed of owning a property here, so when Smugglers came up for sale we put an offer in straight away. What made it feel so right was that it was being sold by a lovely couple who had another cottage in Rye, Froglets in East Street. We had ourselves rented Froglets for many lovely family Xmas holidays over the years. So we knew Smugglers cottage would have been well loved and looked after, and came with lots of ' good vibes '.
What makes this Cottage unique
The view down Mermaid Street from the bedroom windows takes my breath away every time I see it. And being just a few quiet steps from the amazing bar at the Mermaid Hotel is quite nice too !.

Fantastic Cottage on most iconic street
Smugglers Cottage is at the top of Mermaid st - in the old part of Rye town and with cobbled street.
It is a lovely size house with a bedroom and bathroom on 1st floor followed by an attic room on 2nd. Kitchen is in a back extension.
It overflows with character and history. All utensils are available in the kitchen and hob/oven all easy to use. Extra half size freezer installed. Loved the cottage and will be going back.
Rye itself is just perfect. Really old and various places to visit including the church spire, Lambs Hse, Tourist Office etc. Antique shops are all over the place and of superb quality and price - large one across the river at the bottom of Mermaid st.
Nearby we were blown away by Camber Sands beach, although it was in the Feb Heat Wave. Winchelsea Beach although stones is a lovely walk - the dog just loved the space on the beaches especially when the tide was out. Finally pleasantly surprised at Hastings, has a similar old town and a bit run down but loved it.
We will certainly be returning to this unusual and ancient part of the country
Really glad you had a good time Graeme, hope to welcome you back soon,
best wishes, Michael.
A fabulous little cottage in the heart of Rye
Spent 10 nights here and we all just loved it. It’s exactly as you see it in the photos, full of warmth, charm and character. Being situated along mermaid street and next door the the historic mermaid inn (ideal for popping in and having a drink after being out for the day) provides for an absolute charming setting. A slight personal caution, the beds are quite firm!! Would we stay here again.......absolutely.
Cozy cottage in the heart of Rye.
Lovely old cottage right in the middle of Rye. Cozy and comfortable and has everything you need for a great short break.
Perfect position. Lovely character apartment. Had very cosy stay. Supplied everything we needed. Only disadvantage was no parking but that's true of most of this central part of town . Thanks.
Cute cottage in a great location.
Had a lovely stay at Smugglers Cottage. Fab location in Rye!
Perfect comfortable must come back to property
Perfect cottage for a working break. Warm well furnished comfortable beds- great fire- all you could wish for and the location close to mermaid inn and town Rye is ideal. Couldn't be bettered.
Thanks Vanessa, hope to welcome you again sometime,
Best wishes, Michael.
Camber Sands is about a mile and a half away, reached either by walking beside the River Rother or a short drive with plenty of parking nearby. The sands and dunes are famous and large enough never to feel busy. Winchelsea Beach is also about a mile and a half away, with pebbles and a large sandy beach when the tide is out.
Rye is about one and a half hours from London, easily reached via the A21. Ashford International Station is about 25 minutes away by car, Dover Ferry Port about an hour and a half by car.
Rye is ideally situated to visit Battle for the Abbey and famous 1066 battlefield, (16 miles) magical Bodiam Castle, rising out of its moat, Rudyard Kipling's Batemans, Great Dixter house and Gardens, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, Chapel Down Vineyard, Sedlescombe Vineyard and Carr Taylor Vineyards.
Closer to home, there are numerous attractions on the doorstep, The Ypres Tower, now a museum and built in 1249, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Rye Heritage Centre and Town Model, mysterious Romney Marsh and Dungeness, to name but a few.
