Romantic Cottage In The Centre Of Rye Citadel

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 1 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage in Rye, Sussex, England - Lovely Quiet Cobblestone Street , The Best Location In Rye

A character cottage centrally located in Rye, close to many historic attractions, antique shops, art galleries, ancient inns, and not least within a few minutes walk of glorious views over the River Rother to Romney Marsh. The wonderful beaches and sand dunes at Camber Sands are within easy reach, as is Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Whilst the cottage has gas central heating throughout, a major feature is the log fire in the living room, making the cottage wonderfully cosy throughout the year. The bay windows to the front have window seats with lovely views down Mermaid Street, making it easy to imagine that you have arrived back in a different age! The cottage is sympathetically furnished mainly with antiques, but has all modern conveniences that today's guests expect.

About michael trevillion

The cottage is owned by me , Michael Trevillion , and my wife Sharon-Therese.

We live and work in Brighton, our main business being a photo library, Trevillion Images Ltd.

We have always loved Rye and most weekends when the cottage is free, you will find us at Smugglers Cottage.

michael trevillion purchased this cottage in 2014

Why michael trevillion chose Rye

Mermaid Street is one of the most famous and loveliest streets in the whole of the UK.

We had always dreamed of owning a property here, so when Smugglers came up for sale we put an offer in straight away.

What made it feel so right was that it was being sold by a lovely couple who had another cottage in Rye, Froglets in East Street.

We had ourselves rented Froglets for many lovely family Xmas holidays over the years.

So we knew Smugglers cottage would have been well loved and looked after, and came with

lots of ' good vibes '.

What makes this cottage unique

The view down Mermaid Street from the bedroom windows takes my breath away every time I see it.

And being just a few quiet steps from the amazing bar at the Mermaid Hotel is quite nice too !.

Perfect position. Lovely character apartment. Had very cosy stay. Supplied everything we needed. Only disadvantage was no parking but that's true of most of this central part of town . Thanks.

Movie Star location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 2 week stay at the Smuggler's cottage. The location was perfect and the home had everything you could need. We could easily walk to everything and felt safe enough to let our kids go to the veggie stand alone. Having the Mermaid Inn just 2 doors down was extremely convenient and multiple restaurants and coffee shops less than a 5 minute walk. Our family of 5 fit perfectly in the house. The top floor bedroom had a large double bed as well as a fold out chair (twin futon). The room was spacious enough for all 3 of our kids/teens to fit. The living room was cozy, but still enough room for us all to watch movies by the fireplace and do school work. The best part was watching the other tourists walk up and down Mermaid Street on the weekend to take pictures of this ideal spot in Rye - and to know that we were lucky enough to be staying there.

Quaint cottage in amazing location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely long Birthday weekend, and will definatly be back as we have fallen in love with both the cottage and Rye.The cottage was just as we expected, when we arrived we felt like we had stepped back in time as far as the location was concerned, it was amazing! It was a very cold weekend, but the cottage was warm and cosy. The owner had thoughtfully left coal and firewood so we enjoyed sitting round the fire playing games in the evenings. On the first evening we enjoyed a nice bottle of red wine again left by the owner. The cottage was very clean and well maintained. I would definatly recommend the cottage to friends and family. In the words of Arnie 'we will be back'!

Camber Sands is about a mile and a half away, reached either by walking beside the River Rother or a short drive with plenty of parking nearby. The sands and dunes are famous and large enough never to feel busy. Winchelsea Beach is also about a mile and a half away, with pebbles and a large sandy beach when the tide is out.

Rye is about one and a half hours from London, easily reached via the A21. Ashford International Station is about 25 minutes away by car, Dover Ferry Port about an hour and a half by car.

Rye is ideally situated to visit Battle for the Abbey and famous 1066 battlefield, (16 miles) magical Bodiam Castle, rising out of its moat, Rudyard Kipling's Batemans, Great Dixter house and Gardens, Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, Chapel Down Vineyard, Sedlescombe Vineyard and Carr Taylor Vineyards.

Further Details:

Closer to home, there are numerous attractions on the doorstep, The Ypres Tower, now a museum and built in 1249, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, Rye Heritage Centre and Town Model, mysterious Romney Marsh and Dungeness, to name but a few.
