About Jane Carlisle
I am a retired researcher and now enjoy spending several months a year at my lovely home in France. This delightful house and garden took me 10 months to find and, although much too large, it was the only property to fulfil my two main criteria: 1 - in a town, a short walk to shops and 2 - with a large private garden (essential for my cat!) It also happens to have a lovely pool. Even so, a total compromise. I wanted somewhere not too far from the Atlantic, far enough south to be warm and have longer winter daylight, near enough to Calais to be able to drive from Yorkshire, and not too far from mountains. It was a 6-year project to renovate, with the main aim of providing an easy to maintain and comfortable home.
Jane Carlisle purchased this Chateau / Country House in 2006
Why Jane Carlisle chose Mansle
Mansle is an attractive town with a range of shops which is built around the magnificent River Charente. The surrounding rolling countryside is bright with sunflowers in Summer. What are the unique benefits of the property? Shops and restaurants etc are a very short walk, yet the large garden is a haven of privacy and peace. The apartment is quite unique, being a single large room that I could not section because of the features which can only be appreciated in its current state, notably the amazing stone palette in the end wall
What makes this Chateau / Country House unique
I especially appreciate a short 5 minute walk to the local supermarket, as I frequently forget essential items, and do not want to use the car every day. This convenience extends to the hairdressers, banks, markets and - of course - restaurants, so drink driving is not a problem! All this, yet the garden is completely private and I generally all day and (almost) every day pottering or relaxing just enjoying the flowers, trees and wildlife.

Lovely house set in a beautiful private garden
We had a fantastic stay at Jane’s beautiful house and studio. We were a family of 10 made up of 2 young children, 2 (nearly) teenage boys and 6 adults and the set up worked perfectly with the grandparents staying in the studio. The property is in the relatively quiet town of Mansle, but is not at all overlooked, so you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere when you’re swimming in the private pool/relaxing in the garden. The house itself is immaculate with loads of character and everything you need for an enjoyable and easy stay. The town is small but that’s part of the charm. There is kayaking in the river which some of our party took part in and loved. We walked to the shop daily for our fresh croissants and bread and took a couple of day trips out to nearby Ruffec and Orodour sur Glane. Overall a wonderful stay and we would highly recommend this property.
Thank you for this lovely review. I am so pleased that you and your family enjoyed staying at my lovely house.
Another relaxing holiday
We had such a relaxing time when we stayed here in 2013 that we booked another two weeks in 2014. Thanks for another great holiday!
Thank you - we are very happy to know that you enjoyed your stay here so much.
Relaxing family holiday
We spent two weeks at the apartment in August 2013 and had a wonderful holiday. As mentioned in a previous review, the studio is large and spacious with an open plan kitchen, lounge and large shower. The garden is a wonderful haven to relax in with a good sized swimming pool and BBQ. We enjoyed a couple of evening BBQs with the owner and her friend who happened to be staying in the house while we were there - they were great company and happy to help with any requests we had. There is a supermarket within a five minute walk from the apartment which proved to be very handy. We enjoyed walks to nearby villages and hired a canoe in Mansle for a wonderful trip along the Charente, as well as spending time relaxing around the pool. We would go back again.
Thank you Mark for this lovely review, and we are just so pleased that you and your family enjoyed your holiday here.
A great place for a relaxing holiday in the large garden with pool or down on the cool river bank. Everything we needed was within easy, flat walking distance of the house and bike hire near by. We particularly enjoyed the canoe trip followed by dinner one evening and there are some wonderful walks too. The property was beautifully presented and we would definitely stay again.
Thank you for your review. I am so pleased that you and your family enjoyed the holiday, and it was good to see the pool and garden being highly appreciated.
The beaches of the charming resort of Royan are approximately 1 hour 30 minutes drive, La Rochelle another half an hour. A water park at Angouleme provides sailing, water skiing and other water sports.
A one hour drive takes you to the historic town of Cognac, Futuroscope, Valley of the Monkeys, Crocodile Planet and Oradour sur Glane, a small town retained in its war time condition after being sacked and burnt by the Germans, who also shot almost all the residents including women and children
Nearest airports are Poitiers and Limoges, each a one hour drive. La Rochelle and Bordeaux are around 2 hours away. The property is 420 miles from Calais, and the road is virtually all dual carriageway, so very easy driving. The local supermarket hires out small cars.
The surrounding countryside is bright with sunflowers in Summer.
The user-powered ferry at Licheres (3 miles) - you pull the boat across the river - is a local attraction for children and adults, and leads to a woodland walk.
The property is situated in the town. Supermarkets x 2, restaurants x 4, hair and beauty salons, banks, bakers, butchers, delicatessen, pharmacies, photocopying, the Tourist Office and the popular canoe club are between 3 and 5 minutes' walk. Canoes, kayaks and bicycles are available to hire, and supervised canoe sessions for children with a range of abilities are provided through the summer holiday. Horse riding is 5 minutes drive away.
On market days - Tuesday, Friday and Saturday - stalls sell fresh fish and greengrocery. Local cheese producers sell a range of speciality cheeses, and in season local honey producers have a stall. The Saturday market tends to provide organic produce.
