The main farmhouse is believed to date back to the mid 19th century and has been renovated to a high standard throughout. With its various outbuildings, it forms a courtyard setting around a large patio and barbecue area, ideal for leisurely outdoor dining. The mountainous, picturesque landscape is as popular with artists as it is cyclists; Lac de Vassiviere, a 40 minute drive away, is not only one of Frances largest lakes, and home to a wide variety of watersports, but also boasts a vibrant and up-and-coming art scene, with regular exhibitions and performances taking place on the island at its centre. The farmhouse is the perfect base from which to explore the natural and cultural delights this captivating region of Central France has to offer.
This was the perfect holiday home for our party, as we wanted a location where we could really relax. The surroundings are beautiful, with lots of wonderful lakes to visit and the town of Limoges within driving distance.
The house itself is steeped in character, and has plenty of space for a large group, with all mod cons and beautiful gardens and fields around. Can't wait to return to this idyllic and peaceful place
We were a large party of 10, 6 adults, 4 children. Plenty of space for everyone inside and outside. We enjoyed the river beach at Chatelus-Le-Marcheix approx 5 minutes in the car. Good beach with lifeguard in the afternoons, snack bar and you can hire boats to go up the river.
Lac de Vassiviere is excellant for a day out with four good beaches and lots of other activities.
We ate in most evenings enjoying the BBQ and letting the children run around.
Chez Moulitard is a beautiful old farmhouse, superbly restored and renovated and full of character. It's extremely comfortable and very well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. From the moment we walked in the front door we felt we were entering a home and not just a holiday let.
The location and outlook is perfect for anyone looking for peace, quiet and solitude. It shares a lane of about 1km with 3 other properties the nearest of which is about 400m away - but none of these can be seen from the farmhouse. The lane itself is hardly used and the only vehicle we saw during our stay (about 3 or 4 times) was the local farmer's pick-up! As a result, apart from birdsong and the odd cow, the farmhouse enjoys almost complete silence, which we noticed particularly sitting outside in the evenings and at nightfall, and when walking around the lane in the evening. Given the altitude of the farmhouse (over 1400 feet) and the almost total absence of light pollution the night sky here is amazing and well worth a late night stroll along the lane.
The owners Paddy & Kerry were really helpful and very easy to deal with - from our original enquiry and the booking process to providing contact numbers if any issues arose during our stay.
This part of Limousin is very 'laid back' and almost as peaceful as the farmhouse itself. The surrounding area is very quiet and quite remote, and certainly isn't an area for those looking for the 'high spots', but for anyone seeking to live life in a beautiful, peaceful landscape for a week or two it's perfect. Within a 30-45 minute drive there are a number of 'swimming' lakes, which were a real highlight for us particularly given the 30+ deg temperatures we experienced! These lakes have at least a small beach and several also have a café or kiosk, pedalos & canoes for hire, and life guards on duty for the afternoon and early evening, which would make them ideal for families. The nearest at Châtelus-le-Marcheix is about 5 km away.
Another highlight for us was the people in the area. Almost without exception we found everyone we encountered to be friendly, warm and welcoming - whether it was in boulangeries & supermarkets or bars, cafes & restaurants.
We could go on and on but will stop now and summarise by saying that for anyone looking for the gentle, 'laid back', away from it all holiday in beautiful surroundings that this lovely farmhouse and area can provide we could not recommend Chez Moulitard highly enough.
I, along with other members of my family have stayed at this gite a number of times ('gite' doesn't do the property justice - it's more a 'country house'!) and each time has been wonderful. The house is beautiful, so clean and well-equipped, and, if you love cooking, the kitchen is a dream! Patrick, the owner, has obviously taken great care in providing guests with everything that could possibly be needed, from the well-equipped kitchen, the lovely bathrooms, the delightful bedrooms to the three-seater comfortable swing in the garden! There's even a fish-pond full of beautiful goldfish! The house is in a very quiet location (you won't have any noisy neighbours!) and the tranquility is wonderful. St Pierre Cherignat is a lovely, small village and a short distance away from charming towns of Bourganeuf and St Leonard de Noblat. Within ten minutes drive there are good restaurants - I'd recommend the Quattre Saisons at Le Nouhard and the Auberge de la Poste at Sauviat sur Vige, as well as the 'Stad' in Bourganeuf. Five minutes away from the house is another charming village, Chatelus de Marcheix, which has a stunning river flowing through it. The area is a walker's paradise - straight from the front door! All-in-all I/we couldn't recommend this house and location highly enough: it's just total relaxation. Also, Patrick is the most helpful of owners and you can rest assured that any problems that may arise will be sorted-out very quickly. I'd have no hesitation in saying, 'book this house - you'll love it!' James, Catriona & Jean.
Our family of 5, with 3 grown daughters, thoroughly enjoyed staying at Chez Moulitard, which felt like a home away from home. The house is spacious, comfortable and nicely decorated. Its location is wonderful: quiet, with views over the countryside, yet close to several charming towns. We spent many happy hours walking in the area, and chatting to locals whilst enjoying our 'petit café, lunch or dinner. We shall definitely be back!
