Old Schoolyard Cottage is a charming brick and flint period cottage with a character all of it's own. The cottage sleeps a maximum of four people in two well-proportioned bedrooms. Downstairs, the dining room linking the lounge and kitchen and gives ample space for families to spread out. The cottage is ideally situated being a few moments' walk from the beach and High Street, making daily trips to the local shops a pleasure and yet within minutes you can be on the coastal path or on the cliffs high above the town. There is off-road parking for one car, on the concrete pad in front of the cottage and a long-stay car park 100 meters up Cliff Road for additional vehicles or visitors. Electricity is included and WiFi is available. Linen is provided but guests are asked to bring their own towels. Hot water is provided by immersion heater and a small additional charge is made for the storage heating. The cottage has fitted carpets throughout, except for the bathroom and kitchen, and UPVC double glazing. The tourist information folders are updated each year and a selection of books, DVDs and board games is available. The rear porch area houses a spin drier, freezer, beach chairs and a windbreak but is also suitable for storing bikes etc. We regret we are not able to accept pets. Short breaks are not available in July/August.

About Jane Fisher

My husband, John, and I live in Norwich. John is a native of the county and I moved here when we married over thirty years ago. We bought Old Schoolyard Cottage – so named because it stands on the site adjacent to the former infant school – when our son was two and we spent many idyllic family holidays here when our children were young. We have so many happy memories of sandcastle building, watching the Carnival procession and doing the Treasure Hunt in local shop windows, exploring the station and riding the steam trains... Now the children are in their twenties, when they come home they like to take their friends to the cottage. We never tire of Sheringham and the magic of the North Norfolk coast and still use the cottage ourselves when we can.

Why Jane Fisher chose North Norfolk & Coast

Sheringham is simply great for a traditional family seaside holiday or indeed as a base for exploring the North Norfolk coast or heading inland to the Broads. The town itself is delightful and unspoilt, with lots of independent shops and a market on Saturdays (and Wednesdays in the summer).

There is so much to do and see locally - the North Norfolk Steam Railway, Hillside Animal Sanctuary with it's heavy horses, the Priory Maze and Gardens, the Splash leisure Complex, the Muckleburgh Collection of World War Two vehicles, the breathtaking views and stunning rhododendron walks in the National Trust's Sheringham Park and the Trust's other properties at Felbrigg and Blickling.

A seal trip from Blakeney is a treat not to be missed nor a visit to Pensthorpe Wildlife Centre.

What makes this cottage unique

Most of our guests comment on the ideal location of the cottage. Everything that Sheringham has to offer is literally on your doorstep! The beach, coastal path, shops, supermarket, two children's playgrounds, North Norfolk Railway, pitch and put, and the many varied pubs, restaurants, cafes and tea shops are all just a few minutes walk away.

We'd just love being able to bring the children off the beach, dripping wet and covered in sand, and straight into a hot shower!

The cottage has the huge benefit of off-road parking right in front and a long stay car park 50m up Cliff Road for additional vehicles or guests. The cottage is easily reached by public transport too as the main line station, direct to Norwich, is just five minutes' walk away at the top of the High Street.

Outside: There is a small enclosed patio to the rear which catches the sun in the middle of the day. A patio set and beach chairs are provided. The garden area to the front is largely concrete to allow for parking. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen is included but not towels. The cottage is cleaned once a week and linen can be changed weekly for longer stays. Other: The dining room has a bay window, CD/radio, storage heater, electric coal effect fire and airing cupboard with the stairs leading off. The rear entrance porch stores beach chairs, small freezer, windbreak and surf boards, and could be used to house your own bicycles.

A clean and charming little cottage light and airy. Great stay and easy process with owner.

Lovely idea being able to rent by the day, ideal. Tidy, clean and roomy upstairs. Nice little court yard outside and spot on for the town, the sea and the railway station.

Pleasant owners and access was easy. A hassle and worry free stay in this value for money, clean and comfortable cottage.

very pleasant stay in Sheringham

We stayed 4 nights in the cottage and found it to be a cozy well equipped property. Altho small it provided everything we needed and was very well located near Sheringham High Street and tourist sights nearby.

The photo featured is actually of the cottage across the road and not the rental property which is slightly misleading. The parking space was rather tight in front of the house.

Overall I would highly recommend this property.

We posted the photo of the cottage opposite to illustrate the close proximity of our cottage to the sea - the big red arrow on the photo indicates Old Schoolyard Cottage! The parking space is not spacious, admittedly, although we've had large estate cars parked in it - but it's such a bonus to have off-road parking at all so close to the town centre and sea front!

Lovely clean and very well equipped cottage

The cottage was really well equipped, and extras such as games for the children and a good selection of dvds. The kitchen even though small had everything you needed and there was a small freezer. Sheringham was a two minute walk from the cottage. We went on the steam train Holt, there was not much to do in Holt so don't paln on spending a day there. When you get off the train there is an old fashioned red double decker bus which takes you to Holt for a small fare, it is quite a long walk if you have got small children with you. We also went to the zoo at Cromer which was worth a visit, we took the train form Sheringham as it only takes eight minutes. All in all we had a lovely few days. Jane who owns the cottage was very quick with the booking confirmation and all the information we needed was sent to us well before the holiday began. I would recommend this property because of its location.

I would agree that the lovely shops and eateries in Holt probably are more of an attraction for grown-ups than children! Glad you enjoyed your stay though!

A charming place in which to wind down and relax.

The cottage is well-maintained, clean, warm and comfortable, and had everything we needed. It's set in a perfect location, a stone's throw away from the High Street, restaurants, cafés, Sainsbury, Tesco, and, of course, the sea. We enjoyed the steam train journey to Holt. We were on a bus route and the train station was not far away. The owners, who we had the pleasure of meeting, were helpful and friendly and we would certainly recommend the property to family and friends.

Special interest holidays:

For the birdwatcher and naturalist North Norfolk is a haven - miles of cliff walks with panoramic views of the sea - with famous haunts such as Blakeney, Cley, Titchwell and the North Norfolk marshes only a few miles away.

Coast/Beach:

Sheringham beach is literally on the doorstep, about 200 meters away. At low tide there is an expanse of wide, safe sand to enjoy and the local fisherman can be seen landing their catch. Cromer, with another lovely beach and it's famous pier is four miles away - and can easily be reached by train or bus, or on foot along the coastal path for the energetic!

Travel:

Norwich airport is 35 miles. Car hire is not essential as Sheringham can be reached by train from Norwich and the local Coastal Hopper bus provides an excellent service along the North Norfolk coast.

Distances:

Norwich 35 miles, Cromer 4 miles, Kings Lynn 40 miles, Great Yarmouth 40 miles, Holt 6 miles, Blakeney 10 Miles.

Sheringham is a lovely, unspoilt seaside town much of which is built in traditional flint cobbles and still retains the atmosphere and character of its seafaring origins.

Fishing is still part of the livelihood of the community with locally caught seafood readily available. The town has many friendly pubs, restaurants and individual shops.

In addition to golf, there are facilities for sailing, riding, wind-surfing and fishing nearby. Much of the coastline has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by the National Trust, which has several properties in the area, including Sheringham Park, offering splendid walks through rhododendrons and fine trees. The Splash Leisurepool with chute and wave machine, is a tropical paradise of warm weather all year round. "The Poppy Line" of the North Norfolk Railway (connecting to the main line to Norwich) will take you on a nostalgic steam trip from Sheringham to Weybourne and Holt. Then there is the North Norfolk Heavy Horse Centre, the Mo housing the splendid Sheringham Museum and off-shore lookout tower, the Lifeboat Museum, The Little Theatre, Priory maze, the Muckleburgh Collection of Second World War vehicles - so much to enjoy for all ages!
